I bought a cheap laptop like 12-15 months ago (dell vostro 1000) which has been perfectly fine except for one problem: the battery has recently stopped charging. I looked at dell's recommended upgrades, scrolled to the equivalent battery, and found this:

http://reviews.dell.com/2341/312-0461/reviews.htm

Just one example:

Title: Waste of $$$ Date: November 20, 2008
Pros: None that I can think of.
Cons: I've had the lap top for a little less than a year and the battery completely stopped charging/working around 9 months.

Additional Thoughts: Dell should send all lap top users a back up for free because of the cheap ineffective battery.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

If you read more you see that basically 15 people in a row say the same thing. Supposedly you should spend for the 9 cell battery when you get the laptop because the default 6 cell one is junk :-/

As one reviewer put it: "Since It's pointless to spend another $140 on garbage, I now have to pay half what it cost to buy the computer ($300 for the 9-cell) or have no battery."

I spent a bit of time reading through the review of a more expensive dell battery, and it seems to have more or less the same problem... just maybe to a slightly lesser extent.

Do I have any alternatives? I really do want to continue using this laptop without needing AC 100% of the time! I've never had to replace a laptop battery before so I know very little about this. ARGGASDFGAGFSADjgaSDgjasd

You might try to buy batteries from external sources for cheaper. I think those go for around $100.

Buy an imitation-brand replacement battery, they are cheaper - you can usually buy them @ authorized dell service centers, or online.

Laptop batteries are a pain in the ass to replace because they are all different sizes and are usually way expensive.

I'd definitely buy from one of the 3rd party imitators. Same thing only $100 to $200 less sometimes.

I recommend not buying Dell. Seriously, like half the people I know who got Dells (including me) have had problems with them.

That's interesting. I've had mine for over 2 years at this point and no real troubles. Same goes for all the dell-using people that I know

Same with mine. I got a new laptop for a better graphics card but the laptop itself remained in top condition (other than the battery which wore out after 2+years).

100% of the time when you call companies and yell at them they do something about it.

So call dell, tell them this is some motherfucking bullshit and you won't be buying dell again, they puss out = you win.

I'm not sure if I understand your question but about 90-95% of the time when it's on it's plugged in...

Try reading Dell's reviews on their website (submitted by users) for the battery that your current laptop uses. It might have a better reputation than mine.

He's trying to say something like do you keep the adapter plugged into your laptop even after its done charging. Because if that's what you're doing, it fucks the battery over time. Overcharge and all that nonsense.

the only real thing that you can do at this point is to buy a new battery, or a new laptop.

Your current battery obviously isn't going to last you any longer, and there really isn't a fix for it at this point.

Typical laptop batteries have a shelf life. This means:

The battery do not last forever. Typical life time of a laptop battery is 3 years +/-, However:

This includes the time that it sits in the warehouse not being sold.

And:

Battery have a separate warranty and is typically shorter than the unit warranty.

Tough luck?

Yeah... what can you do, you decided to go al cheapo and got ripped off.

You can sent your battery to some battery refurbishment business who can restore your battery.

I work in a computer retailer that sells dell and this shits happens all the time and no we don't care how hard you scream, in the end it all finishes with you buying another battery.

Li-Ion dont "over-charge" per-se. However, it does wear out faster if you leave it fully charged all the time and especially in warmer temperature. Also, Li-Ion batteries slowly loses capacity over time, even if it is not used (if you don't use it for a long time, keep the capacity around 50% and in cool temperature). This means it is not a good idea for Dell to include a backup battery; in general, it is not a good idea to buy a Li-Ion battery if you don't plan to use it immediately.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery#Guidelines_for_prolonging_Li-ion_battery_life

Some laptop's power management software lets you specify how much charging takes place. I set my power manager to stop charging at 80% by default, and only increase to 100% when I know I will need the extra capacity.

Also, you can get cheap batteries on eBay. I bought a 9cell (for my ThinkPad) for $65 shipped.

I often have my laptop on for several hours, so even if it's charged I leave the AC adapter in so it won't die :-/

I guess I could pop out the battery whenever I don't need it?

Ive had 3 lappies so far,

First, a no name company "vpr matrix" http://www.vprmatrix.com/ that sold through best but b/c the laptop looked cool - after two years, the backlight broke, the unit powering the backlight broke (700$ fix lol), the harddrive died when i turned it into a music streaming server, the network card died as well. It was a pretty shitty computer.

Second, dell - two things died - the battery after about 2.5 years, got a replacement from dell for 150$ since i had a inspiron - the ac adaptor broke after about 3 years - got a imitation adaptor for like 35$ - its still running, although the fan is loud as all hell b/c it overheats.

Now i have a benq i bought used for pretty much free, so far its been ok. Im expecting to have to buy a new computer in like 1-1.5 years.
