So a bunch of us over in #tl.dota2 have been messing around in this really fun space game called planets.nu. Its a remake of an old play-by-email game for DOS (early 1990s..), but they created a pretty nice web client for it to run on.
So the best way to describe the game is to compare it to something like Civilization, but in space (some compare it to MoO). The different factions you can play as are actually 'inspired' (copied) from the famous sci-fi universes Star Wars, Star Trek, and Battlestar Gallactica. In one universe you can have Borg cubes going up against death stars, while the Ferengi steal stuff from the Colonies of Men. The game is very in depth with lots of unique ships, and you have to balance empire building (easily reaching 50+ planets, which are very similar to a Civ city) with building an army, and managing your resources efficiently. Each race/faction also has a pretty unique feel:
- The Solar Federation (star trek): Higher tax rates, strong ships, can 'refit' ships with new weapons/engines.
- The Lizard Alliance (star trek Gorn): Cloaking, beafy ships, faster mining, can 'Hiss' at their people to get them to pay more tax, also have a suicide 'Glory Device'
- The Empire of the Birds (star trek Romulans): Cloak, spy missions, best strength/cost ship in game.
- The Fascist Empire (star trek Klingons): Glory Devices, can pillage.
- The Privateer Bands (star trek Orion Pirates): Cloaking, fast but weak ships, can steal or rob ships.
- The Cyborg (star trek guess who): Can assimilate natives, some of the most powerful ships in the game, can create 'worm holes', everything is really expensive.
- The Crystal Confederation (star trek Tholian): Very defense, can trap/steal ships with special mines, love hot planets, immune to Glory Device.
- The Evil Empire (starwars): Free fighters, most powerful ship in the game, dark sense (can sense enemy planets), Super Star Destroyer can easily take planets.
- The Robotic Imperium (Battlestar cylons): ships can make fighters, great mine layers, pretty strong ships.
- The Rebel Confederation (star wars): can build fighters in space, can live on cold planets, Rebel Ground Attack, and immune to evil empire's Dark Sense
- The Missing Colonies of Man (battlestar): can create fuel easily, can create fighters in space, fighters can minesweep.
These are mainly just the 'faction bonuses', as each faction's ship list is at least 50% unique to that race. Ship Database, for those interested.
If anyone is interested in joining us (and learning with us, none of us are anything near experts, and the biggest noobs can still offer a lot to an alliance) we are currently putting a game together at http://planets.nu/games/61159. If you signup, there is also a fairly short tutorial that covers all the basics.
Most of us are typically in the #tl.dota2 IRC, if you have any questions.
