My favorite FF game is an unofficial FF game: Lost Odyssey. Not a part of the series but made by a lot of the same guys.

I am about 5 hours in now, going to play again. Drop on by my stream http://www.twitch.tv/pufftrees if you want to see some good ole Final Fantasy action in updated graphics. I can help you with emulator and settings... my brother has been tweaking the emulator settings for years to make them look this good. I don't like to use walkthroughs but if anyone in chat wants to help me with something I might miss... feel free!

I absolutely hated Lost Odyssey. I put maybe thirty hours into that damn game and I can't for the life of me remember one significant thing. It was a beautiful game to look at, for sure, and the immortal idea was a good one if overplayed and underwhelming. Those kids just grated on my nerves. The best part of Lost Odyssey was the White Rabbit trailer. The art style reminds me of a gritty Kingdom Hearts which is terrible in that everything (and weapons especially) looks hollow and bulky like ceramic toys. I've never played a game that looks so good and so awful all at once. One-dimensional characters. Cliched villains. Boring world. I'd almost say the old LOTR JRPG is better except I can't even remember what it's called. I wanted to like Lost Odyssey, really I did. Bleh.

Initially, and in my heart, I loved FF VII. There was never a dispute. It was the second FF I ever played and a game that I spent COUNTLESS hours into. I, in turn, made a couple of my friends spend countless hours playing the game. I beat the game, 100%. Ruby and Emerald weapon got beaten as well as the Gold Saucer's Arena. It was beautiful, no doubt. Remember the cinematics? Remember all the conspiracy/brainstorming that went on around particular characters (Hi Zack!). It was incredible. I'm also assuming that when I voted in this poll initially I voted for FF VII. However.... I firmly believe FFX is the best game in the series. The love story between Tidus and Yuna, the struggle between father and son and the eternal love and trust between friends are just a few of the beauties of the game. Not to mention the absolute visual orgasm offered in the cutscenes (I have to say, FF X-2 had amazing cutscenes too, albeit nothing else). Then there's the soundtrack. Your hero's have suffered through all the strife and problems in Spira and they've finally made it to Zanarkand. Tidus sees it all with his own eyes. I believe this is also the team he finds Yuna's sphere-thing? It's heart-wrenching. But the hero's continue on, they pull together and they encourage each other forward. I don't know what it is but I just can't get enough of that soundtrack. I just love it. to be fair, there weren't many bad pieces of music in the OST for the game at all but this is the one that stands out for me above all the rest. I could go on forever about the game, I could probably write a blog but probably never will. For me, FFX is greater than FF VII. It just has more stand out points. I'm that little bit older now and I haven't played a FF in a couple years. I've looked back on them and thought... yeah, that game was incredible. Which game would I start someone on for a Final Fantasy? To this day I can't answer that. For me, I started out with VI. I them moved on to VII. Then I played IV, followed by VIII (which I hated) and then moved on to IX (which definitely doesn't get the credit it deserved!) followed by Tactics, III and then X. I've played X-2, XI and XII. Which one to point the finger to for a newbie; there's no way I could answer that. The obvious answers are more towards which ones NOT to play -- Tactics (difficulty), X-2 (duh) & Dirge of Cerberus. It's too much of an immersive world, no matter what, to just suggest one. Give 'em all a go I say. As Yuna says herself: I want my journey to be full of laughter.

Agreed with above, it's hard to say which one to start with, but X is probably the most accessible.

It's too much of an immersive world, no matter what, to just suggest one. Give 'em all a go I say. As Yuna says herself: I loved FFX as well, but I still prefer VII. The thing is FFX was amazing on the first playthrough, every twist blew my mind and discovering the way Spira worked was absolutely incredible, especially when you found out how things REALLY worked. However it's so much more... blatant than FFVII. On the second playthrough nothing really changes, all the significant plot points are much more in your face. FFVII has so much more subtlety and so much more going on in the background, you're mislead more than in FFX and on much deeper levels, to the point of not even trusting the character you control. FFVII was the game I played once and then went back to years later and got more out of it the second time because there was so much that didn't happen right in front of you, but was alluded to or seen only partially in flashbacks which often times turned out to be wrong. There were also things that happened early on and forgotten and then explained by later events so when you play it a second time you're like "holy shit that makes so much more sense now"

I think the best videogame composer though is Yasunori Mitsuda. who did Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. To me Uematsu is best at big bright catchy themes while Mitsuda is a god of ambiance and subtlety. Both are amazing at both types of music, but I think Mitsuda has an overall edge since a lot of Uematsu's work is rehashed and remixed over the FF series.
