Oh totally. 6 different campaigns in the single player and multiplayer isn't TOO hard to find a game. I just load in, start matchmaking, alt tab, do some browsing and usually get into a game within 5 minutes. Though, I'm a big fan of WH40k and I really like Company of Heroes. If you're not a fan of either of those, you probably won't like DoW2. Hell, it's free until Sunday at 1pm PST. Give it a whirl.

No macro to speak of, but more about map control and managing battles on multiple fronts, which is when things get fun. You've got to keep your war machine moving and doing something useful, without turning into a giant Protoss-style blob unless absolutely necessary. Usually the guy/team that blobs up all the time ends up getting fucked by Suppression, AOE attacks and lack of resources.

2 suggestions for those who might buy it "-disable32bitcheck" for Retribution, use it in Steam - game Properties (in library) - Set Launch Options, without ". This will override the natural lock for higher textures on 32 bit OS (without them it's not nearly as pretty). And play campaign in coop That's much, much more fun. Max Payne sale is up as well, till tomorrow.

Which game offers the best single player experience because I don't want to learn another rts and would I understand the story if I'm not familiar with the warhammer universe at all. If you would only ever play single player then DoW1 is good, like BroodWar good really. As it is old and probably cheap I would recommend getting the first 3 expansions, DoW1, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade. Lots of campaign content there and the gameplay and style and voice acting, art etc is really atmospheric. DoW Soulstorm was not made by Relic and is regarded as a bit of a let down to the series. If you want to play DoW2 and only single player then get DoW2 vanilla. The campaign has by far the most content (took me about 25 hrs to play through on hard I think). Chaos rising campaign follows from vanilla so it might be a good purchase also. For multiplayer though only Retribution is still active. Community is small but dedicated. You have no problem finding games etc., and Relic are quite active in adding content and patching. Retribution campaign is very meh. Its good but short. Anyway Retribution is free2play until sunday so you can download and have a look. There is standard multiplayer, Free-for-All, Last Stand game mode etc. Some things to check out. To be honest I think you could finish the Retribution campaign in 1 day. I don't think it would be fun to jump straight into ranked play because the game has an extremely steep learning curve. I have played about 250 hours and still know very little of the game. PS If anybody does take advantage of the free weekend and wants to play skirmish then go into the public lobby and create a game called something like F2P Newb Game, 1st time game, etc. You will get people your skill level to play with. And team games in DoW 2 (2v2, 3v3) are fun and actually probably more balanced than 1v1.

Yeah I think so, DoW series and CoH aside, Darksiders is supposed to be quite good too. I don't know of the other games. You are right though, next sale might be even better with maybe Space Marine included. Depends if you have time though to go through all those games!

I've always thought the first series of Dawn of War was better, but neither have a huge community backing anymore. I don't really play RTS games for the campaign so I can't really recommend you pick them up. The retribution free weekend might give it a surge in players, but I wouldn't count on it. Necrons are my favorite race though so possibly biased ^_^

It's not the best but definitely very playable and the story isn't too dumb. I'd suggest playing it with a controller though.
