He kills the main charactors every 15 pages, then introduces a new one before setting them up to die. It's an interesting writing style. Plus hot twin incest.

Awesome books. I don't know - the depth of the characters that he actually keeps alive are really awesome - but really there are only like 2 or 3 characters you should get attached too. The writing style isn't "great" compared to Eddings or Lawhead but the books are a pretty good Fantasy read. They are long and sometimes disjointed but they will keep you entertained.

Lol. You realise Eddings actually plagurises himself. He has about 8 charactors and he just renames them. And you know it's true. He steals whole chapters from himself.

Yes he does. But I love Eddings. Easily in my top two authors. If you read the Belgariad and the Mallorean(sp) then you don't need to read any of his other books. But they are good. I've read 80% of the major fantasy works and I don't know why but I really like them.

Martin's books are very nicely written, reading them is a real pleasure, story is also nice and interesting. Nothing realy new , but a very good series nontheless.

On the other hand in late books Martins seems to catch the same disease that Jordan has (Talking about "Wheel of Time"). To many characters , to many events, to many plots. Sure it is nice that book isn't to simple, but when on 400 pages goes 7 days from the life of characters there is someting wrong. Martin made to many key characters (persons from which point of view the narration is situated), so informing reader what is going in life of every key character takes to many space in book therefore slowing action. Also during the time between publishing a new book, you just forget parts of last making it difficult to follow without reading the previous tome again.

But is still on of the better books, and definietly one worth reading.

Ps. I also love Dragonlance but only the main series.

PS.2 I just noticed that you have written "SON of fire and ice" , didnt read it properly in first time, i assumed you want opinion on R.R. Martins "Song of Fire and Ice", if you wanted to talk about someting else just ignore me.
Pathetic Greta hater.

I remember from an interview he was asked what he thinks he has done that was really new. I believe he stated the wall. Well, different enough I suppose.

He has written an awful lot before ASOIAF as well: http://www.subterraneanpress.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SP&Product_Code=martin

I suppose people like it mainly because it is a realistic gritty epic fantasy.

Ive read the first 3 and have the 4th on ebook, but ill likely wait till I buy it to read. Jon snow is perhaps my favorite character in all of fantasy so the interesting characters, and the plot is mainly why I like the books.

The first book revolves most around the Stark family(Both parents, jon, and both sisters). The other characters are Daenerys, a young woman being controlled by her brother for power, and Tyrion a horny and clever dwarf.

I read the first book of A Song of Ice and Fire and haven't yet been inspired to read the others. TLers probably recommend it because its gritty and coarse compared to LotR or most other fantasies. Like others have said, characters die left and right. At the end of the first book, all my fav characters are dead so I don't really care to read more.

I recommend the Sword of Truth series. It definitely has some grit (read: sexual content, profanity, etc) without being over the top. The plot and characters are fantastic. While such things are a matter of taste, I can't help but feel that Sword of Truth blows ASOIAF out of the water and then some. I'm also a Wheel of Time fan, although the last book I read (Crossroads of Twilight) was pretty boring.

Write down your favorite 3 characters at the beginning.

At the end of A storm of swords (book 3) I guarantee at least 1 is dead, probably 2, and a chance at all 3.

Its not spoiling.

The guy who owns the books I read (I borrowed them from him) told me the same thing, didn't spoil it for me, I still love them.

I had the pleasure to read the first 3 books in 2004, during one hot motherfucker of a summer. Back then, my family was in a bit of a ruckus, and I lived home alone for over a month, with the electricity cut off and little more than instant soups for breakfast, tap water for lunch and the books for dinner. I would set up my reading corner with the cheapest candles my left-over change could buy, put myself in a comfortable position and take a plunge in Martin's world. I bought a pack of 10 batteries for my mp3 player to last me the entire month, and more often than not I would turn the annoying thing off, as the immeasurable depth of the storyline quenched the last bits of interest for the jingling noise escaping the earphones. In the end, two batteries lasted for the entire month and then some.
It was, quite honestly, the best month of my life.
players do games, press mens do their things. and fans do make good cheers.

Fucking TRUTHERY.

God that book took me so much longer to get through.

It was even worse than A Clash of Kings (which had more politics and less fighting than Game or Storm...but christ, feast was just boring)

A. It's A Song of Ice and Fire
B. Martin is very good with characterization. It's them, and not so much the themes/plot/whatever that really pulls you in
What fun is it being cool if you can’t wear a sombrero?
