An article about the benefits of gaming was published in the Wall Street Journal. The article highlights the SkillCraft.ca expertise project and other video game research. There is a video as well.
There will be a page for the live chat about the topic of gaming research hosted by both Lee and myself at 1pm Eastern on Tuesday, but you can submit comments or questions any time before then.
== Speaking of our research... We are getting close to finishing the data processing for the 3400 replays collected from the fall. A great many scripts were written, checked, and double-checked, and we're nearly to the stage where we see some results. Our focus will be first and foremost on writing up the results for publication in a scientific journal, but as soon as that's done we'll be posting player-oriented results here on TL. We're getting close, everyone. Promise.
I'd like to give a big shout out to godulous and the fine folks at Playhem.com for giving us access to a staggering amount of replays (150K+), making SkillCraft.ca the largest scientific study of gaming ever conducted far. Over the next few weeks we'll be moving our research project onto a computer cluster with almost 10,000 processing cores.
Finally, I want to thank you, TL, for your replays and your continuing support. When we first started this, it wasn't clear to anyone that the project would go anywhere. Now, about 10 months in, the SkillCraft.ca expertise study has received press coverage in the Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, Kotaku, Escapist, and Gamasutra (let me know if I missed any!). Our research is not possible without you. So I'm drinking a toast to TL, and to StarCraft, and to Science, and another to Science and one more because Day[9] forgot to enable sound.
EDIT: Added the link to the video EDIT 2: Added the link to the article, and removed the video link (it's linked from the article).

Excited to read it. I remember checking the wrong box twice while doing your survey. And it was while assessing some really obvious openings. I gave some crazy answers. Was a bug with either firefox or noscript that wouldn't allow me to check boxes, so I accidentally submitted some crazy predictions. Made a note of it in the text of the next question though. Don't know whether you're allowed to change data points anyway. Your sample size is prolly big enough for it not to matter.

Looking forward to when your study gets published.

Awesome article! It seriously warmed my heart, when the interviewer in one of the vids said she'd been playing games since she was a kid. :D
Good luck with finishing the project, and congratiolations on all the success it's had so far!

Great article! Makes me feel proud to be a gamer (call me what you will haters).
|
Nice to see a mainstream article that doesn't completely dismiss gaming as a worthless thing for children, and instead maybe something that could benefit society.
PS, it was fun participating in the study. :p

This got pretty big holy shit

I'm glad to see one of my replays being part of such an interesting and exciting study :D Can't wait to see the result.

Just going to bump this because people keep making separate topics all over the place.
