rather than do the research myself.. i just wanna know. they are trying to petition for poker to be in the olympics.. the olympic commission or something has said chess and bridge are sports. starcraft is clearly somewhere in that catagory, and is hugely popular in 1 country (unlike many events!). so why cant it be in the olympics? does anyone know the official rules or process or whatever?

if it was in the olympics it would be widely watched because of the gimmick (a video game! first!) and the controversey. it's only once every 4 years. it would be good for video games, good for sc.. and good for the olympics probably. but is it possible? im curious. but cant find jack shit. :|

Bowling isn't even in the Olympics, so poker and starcraft don't stand a chance. I heard they are also trying it for paintball.

WCG would have to be broadcasted on television first for this to be even conceivable. And just because ESPN has the word "sport" in it, it doesn't make spelling bees or math competitions a sport. A sport may be a competition or a game, but a game or a competition doesn't necessarily have to be a sport.

But don't get me wrong, I'd love to see computer games played live on television. What TechTV does doesn't exactly count -_-

Until it's popular world wide with the masses (non-bw gamers), starcraft can't be in the olympics.

I think olympics also stand for the virtues, ie. stamina. I'm not sure what virtues starcraft holds, other than agility or intelligence/wisdom. The masses have no need for smarts, they just want action.

It's also hard to understand what's happening in a BW game. There's no way that many people will understand what's going on. Ask your dad (or someone who has no clue whats going on) to watch you and don't tell them what's happening. See what happens. ;(

WCG is a very crappy version of the Olympics. A nice attempt, but nothing close. With a lot of work WCG could be great. Too bad there's a myriad of problems with it ..

Video games won't be in a tournament dedicated to physical sports. ;(

People are trying to get Chess into the olympics and thats not physical, olympics are also somewhat mental thus the chess, and possible magic the gathering if chess makes it.

I know, if they switched one of the games on arena, and put broodwar in there, im sure their ratings would go up and they wouldn't need to switch their channel name ever other month.

The gaming scene is very different from the Olympic scene. If it were ever to join the Olympics, it would be a very slow process that would take decades.

roman: it depends on ur definition. the only reason older games became "sports" is becuz ppl had no other option at the time. starcraft is a physical activity. im sure u could see the vital signs of players at the highest level b consistent with a notion that they are physically acting.. to compete.. in a game. like hockey, basketball? maybe their heart rate doesnt raise as high, is that why it should not be a sport? how much must the heart rate raise in order for a game to be considered a sport? how much energy must be used? is there a standard?

klogon: baseball isnt in the olympics either. but some other "less popular" games are. some really piece of shit games are in it, because they're popular in 1 country or some bullshit. the question is, what are the requirements for a game to be included in the olympics? i am sure there are games that deserve it much less than starcraft by any standard, so this is why i wonder...

Nice post. I've thought the exact same thing. They DO have a show called Arena where 2 teams complete in a triathlon of 3 games, but it's almost always games like call of duty and MoH, all new games..

Chess is a very skillful game, and fun to watch to a large number of people. That does not make it a sport. The same goes for poker, starcraft, and a large number of other events that somehow are already olympics games. Curling is NOT a sport, It may take more physical
effort then say.....a event in marksmenship. Still Its NOT a sport, I dont know why its not. Its just not. Standing still and aiming a gun is a sport, but 3 guys with brooms sweeping is not. Thats just the way it is.
