I'm posting this a little early. Still need to get okays and information from other pony artists from our close knit pony community!
What is this? As many of you may know, I began drawing as a hobby very recently. The reason? PONIES. Back in the good ole days of TLPonies, I spent a lot of time on IRC taking requests from people and drawing pony images for them! This was back when we hardly had anyone at all in terms of artists! Fast forward to March and we have a number of artists who love and draw ponies on a regular basis, ranging from experienced artists to newbies in training. Since then, I have begun drawing different subject matters, but ever since leaving my pony days, I have missed drawing for you guys. So, I decided I wanted to share this experience with all the other artists on TLPonies! One day (or more than one day), we will gather in IRC for a few hours, receive requests from the channel and then proceed to draw and chat for 30 minutes. At the end of the 30 minutes, we'll all present what we have, discuss, poke fun, encourage or whatever!
Why? Good art comes from practice and great art comes from inspiration. If people are not given motives or time lines, it can be very difficult to initiate either. By putting all eyes on the artists and telling them "GO", they are forced to create and in their pressure, can either break, or produce their very best art. You may not agree with this, but at the very least, coming together and being told to draw while those around us watch and eat popcorn, we will improve and learn to love teh pony drawings.
When? Currently, I'm talking to everypony to see when would be the best time. Currently, I'm looking at the 21st of April, a few hours before the new episode airs. This way, the maximum people can get on, since we have artists from all around the world. There will be more details on this later when we get closer, but expect it to happen that weekend.
Who? ANYPONY. And I mean it! If you wanna try your hand at drawing ponies, now's your chance! You don't even need a tablet to join, as you can work with traditional medium and scan/take a picture of your drawing. In order to give a more comprehensive list of artists in our group, here are some of TLPonies' artists.
Saurabhinator joined use for the first time when he painted a commissioned work for our resident clopper Gary Oak, in which he painted a scene from Gary's fanfic. Since then, he's been coming by regularly to hang out, draw some ponies and enslave himself to Rarity's every wish.
Saurabhinator is perhaps one of the most prolific artists in our group. Here is the proof of requests he did for us some time ago.
Diversee has been one of the original TLPonies as far as I can tell. He began his drawing career around the same time as I did. In my opinion, I do believe he has improved the most of any other artist in TLPonies (not to shut down anyone else), but starting from the point as I did, he has experimented with poses, beautiful pony topics, colors and magnificant mane creations in order to earn him multiple slots in EqD's Drawfriends!
Diversee's very recent Drawfriend success! A beautiful picture that displays his mane work in its full glory!
Caumen is not a frequent visitor, but he always does shower us with his super cute pony style from time to time. Coming from drawing cartoon sea creatures, Caumen now directs scenes of pink ponies flying jets. To date (correct me if I'm wrong), he is the only pony in TLPonies to have created an EqD worthy comic (based on the fact that he's the only one that had a comic submitted). Hopefully he'll join us and stop by more often.
The comic that captured the hearts of thousands of EqD visitors.
Srs who is this girl? I have only seen her on our vent channel once and since then has vanished (as far as I can tell). Still, running her own tumblr, http://asklovey.tumblr.com/, srsishere is another one of those prolific pony painters, who produces pictures periodically.
Srsishere's tumblr OC being adorable in for Granny Smith's zap apple rituals! Or Easter...
We all know who Raelcun is. FXOPONYBOI! He's dabbled in art (with wonderful value renderings!) in the past and has made EqD calibre desktops working with vectors. If it were up to me, he would have to join us without choice. Hope you do.
Raelcun's vector vinyl desktop background! I think it's about time he made another .
Another quient TLPonies friend that hangs out in IRC all the time! Although she has only produced one image, it was pretty damn good and super cute. It was also Day[9] ponified, making it 20 percent cooler. Bleh... overused quote.
It's Day[9] and Manfred folks! Pillow is still the only person on TLPonies that has ponified Day[9]! Mad props.
StarDragon is just awesome. He makes fucking huge ass plushies and sends them to Cane like a badass. Oh and he's improving on his pony art while he's at it. I also think I'll be forcing him to be our host for this event, but I still expect him to draw. A broken shoulder may have gotten you out of work, but it won't get you out of drawing ponies.
The only image that I have of his. I haven't drawn with him in a while because of me being busy. Hopefully this event will rectify that.
One of our many MOBA players, bloody has taken the task of learning to draw ponies, traditional style! Unfortunately, I don't have any images of his saved, and I've spent even less time drawing with him than with SD . However, after I'm done kicking his ass in DotA 2 and LoL, we can get on a draw dem ponies!
Frek, who is a musician and not an artist, has displayed majestic and divine inspiration by none other than BloodyNoob. BloodyNoob's fetishized desire to be with and integrate himself with the being that is known as Santashy has spawned a piece of work too great for words. Therefore, see for yourself and believe.
BEHOLD THE GREATEST WORK OF ART!
GMarshal
Apparently GMarshal is also learning. Confirmation Plx? If so, I want him too! STEAL ALL OF THE ARTISTS.
I'm sure there are plenty of others who have tried their hands in our group and I may have missed a couple. Let me know if I have and I can post your info if you like .
Remember, this will be happening 2 weekends from now! Keep posted for exact times and keep practicing!
Alternative Methods for Organization Rather than having everyone present at once, we could set up a prompt at the beginning of the week and have everyone bring something in at the end of the week. Then we could compile it together. Think of it as a TLPonies drawfriends!
AgonyX90 out.
UPDATE: We now have a time for this event! It'll be on Saturday 21st of April from 2 PM PST/5PM EST/ 12 CET on.
The main stream for the event will be SD's, but anyone that is working digitally is encouraged to stream as well (looking at you Saurab). I'll be getting mine to work again as well.
Like I said, the format will be super chill. Basically we'll come up with a topic/theme in IRC/vent and then we'll spend the 30 minutes drawing. After we're all done, all the images will be dropped in IRC and on SD stream and then we'll discuss the images and maybe receive some tips from Saurab and the other greats ^.^.
Keep in mind that anyone is welcome to join, even if you don't have a tablet. Feel free to use traditional mediums, but be prepared to take pictures or scan to upload them. Or you could produce beautiful pony art Frek style, with MSPaint.

I might join in as well. I've been trying to do some pencil drawings of ponies (mostly because I have some classes that are incredibly boring ). I want to get better at drawing, and I'm sure doing this would help. I'm not sure how open I will be that day, but I'll try to free up some time for this. Just don't laugh at my badly drawn ponies when I do. :D
edit: Very sadly, my schedule will not allow for me to be here this day. I would love to see maybe a post or something after showing all the work our artists do.
The first Artist Expose is on an artist I THOUGHT we already knew about. I'm gonna start out slow by doing this on an artist who is already known by a lot of the community for her art style, it is really easy to tell when something is created or inspired by her. Today I present....
Rai!
Let's start with a little bit about the artist!
Rai (full pen name Raikissu) is known affectionately as the 'Queen of Tumblrpon', and dons the royal mustache to show her status. Her primary interest in drawing before ponies was pokemon of some sorts, but now she is almost exclusively on to ponies. The tumblr that made her famous is Ask My Little Chubbies! which caught on with the community because they are cute as hell. When she isn't drawing she is very interactive with her followers on her MLC mod-blog, answering most questions that she gets.
Chubbies are essentially the chibis of ponydom, while traditionally chibis are disproportionate with large heads and small bodies, chubbies combine the head and body into a cute amorphous blob that appears as the name suggests, chubby. Due to the simplistic design, the only real ways to distinguish each one is by skin color and hairstyle.
Besides this simplistic style, she has a very unique full-formed pony as well. Here is a typical piece that you would see coming from Rai.
The tell-tale style of Rai's art (and pony styles in general) can be broken up into a few distinct groups: pony anatomy, lines, and coloring/rendering. Pony Anatomy: As you can see in the Fluttershy above, and as well in the title pic, Rai likes to use a fairly elongated limbs and neck that are attached to the standard MLP body.
This piece gives us multiple nice angles to see what I mean by this, it is easiest to see the extended neck on AJ and Pinkie, and the extended limbs on Twilight and Rarity. Also, the hooves come to more of a 'point' than the usual straight stop indicating where the shoe would go. When drawing pegasi, her wings are of average size and very simplistic, only forming two or three rows of 'feathers' each. This simple and rounded wing style is pretty consistent with her entire pony art philosophy, giving it a very soft look. While I'm on the topic of roundest, probably the most noticeable distinction Rai has from other pony artists is the way she draws faces. The eyes are as large as they are in the show, but they lack a very defined pupil and iris that I'll discuss more in the coloring section. Muzzles on Rai ponies are always rounded, this is due to a few techniques I'll mention in the next two parts of her style, but for now the important idea is that each part of the pony anatomy is refined in such a way as to make it smooth and flowing. When she draws lines her line-width varies from picture to picture depending on with she takes more or less time, that Fluttershy was done for the 30 minute art challenge. On a whole though, she tends to use thicker and fewer lines than most people. A lot of the charm that her drawings have is derived from this 'round' direction she take with her art. Now on a slightly different note, we see that the line color is not necessarily predictable (sometimes using the compliment, sometimes using a more purple base color, etc.) but in almost every instance she maintains a single color throughout the entire pony's linework.
This line technique is far from unique, but like all the parts of her style it serves the purpose of being adorable, the thick lines allow for the pony to seem very round and safe, but they can also be jarring and obtrusive if they are left black. For some styles this is exactly what they want, but she removes that problem by letting the color of the object dictate the color of the line. The show does something similar.
To put the final nail in the cute coffin (the coffin of cute, or a coffin that's cute, you decide) we get to the coloring/rendering. Her color choice is always very saturated and vivid, and her shading is relatively soft, she defines a lot of the volume of her ponies with only shadows as opposed to lines, which smooths out the surface a lot. This is what I see going on in the muzzle, in most cases she only defines a small portion of the muzzle with hard lines and allows us the imagine the rest with the help of proper shading. Recently, (like in the title pic) she has experimented with a kind of splotchy shading technique around the borders of the light/dark which doesn't look like its going to be kept. Ah but I seem to have forgotten about the eyes. Yes, these giant orbs of color are almost entirely iris, and the whole eye is given a gloss. Giant beady eyes are daaaawesome, so it makes sense. Just another technique that uses highlights to give a sheen to the eyes, increasing overall cuteness by roughly 13.62%.
I think that sums up a large portion of her style, unfortunately I do not have the in depth knowledge to go any farther, but I do have a tutorial she recently made. Maybe you could glean a few more implicit details from her instructions.
Her style maybe be strongly associated with her, but she did have a progression that got her to where she is. In fact, the best way to see how much effort she has put into making her art 'cute', we just need to look at earlier work. Just look at this piece from the beginning of last October:
The lines are thin, the backdrop is dark and brooding, all of the rendering and lines come to sharp points and corners. Most of the lines alternate between convex and concave to give the corners an even sharper edge. The border of the 'branches' is very course and unwelcoming, and Luna's irises are extremely detailed. It is hard to believe that the same person drew this image, but it proves that her style is not just a fluke. She didn't go from simple doodles to simple drawings, there must have been a process there, as she is quite capable of doing fine or intricate art.
Commissions:
She does indeed do commissions, but she is tumblr famous zomg so I'm not sure if they are open, she has posted quite a few of the OCs and other commissioned pieces on her DA, which I will put in here for examples (I would put a commission sheet if I could find one...).
