I think being more gestural would be very beneficial to you. On the other hand, I think your painting in comparison to your gestural work to be perfectly fine and very good. As for gestural, I think it'd benefit you if you just practiced gesture drawings more so than full out drawing compositions. I know that when I was on skype with you, you mentioned that on posemaniacs and other figure drawing sites, you leave the image on for as long as you need. Although this has its obvious benefits, I think you're missing the gestural aspect of it. After looking at a lot of artists/illustrators/painters/etc, I find there there is a lot of value in being able to draw a very definitive and clear gestural drawing, in which within 30 seconds and 10 lines, you know exactly what the character is doing. I probably don't need to explain any of this to you though, as I'm sure you already know :-p But in my humble opinion, I feel as if this is where you are not as strong when it comes to images/compositions/drawings, even when not working with ponies. You work very often with very structured images and shots, trying to get the true image of something that is standstill. As a result, I sometimes feel that your images lack rhythm, movement and life. I think it would help you a lot if you just took a bunch of images from MLP (or use human figures) to do a bunch of gestures, emphasizing movement, twisting, rhythm, motion, etc over form and structure. Also, I find your pony expressions lacking. But this makes sense, since you are not an animator. Obviously if you don't care for it, you don't have to improve on it, but I feel that implementing more facial structure (again, putting life into your images!) would help a lot! Lastly, I feel like your pony necks are too long, but this is a preference thing :-p. Sorry if it seems like I"m just dishing a lot of negatives, but I think sometimes the things you worry about are the things you do best. And you probably worry about them because they are what you know best, such as the fundamentals of lighting, value, shapes and structures. I think its time to loosen up and experiment. In order to try to explain what I mean, if you look at your DA account, a lot of your pony images are those of OC characters in the same pose. If you look at Div's, although he does not have nearly the same mastery as you do in terms of line quality/control, structure and perspective sense, shading, painting, etc etc, he is always trying new things and introducing new "life like" qualities into his images. When you say that drawing ponies is detrimental, I can agree with you on that, but not entirely. You have to look at what benefits it can provide, and I would say that given its simple animation style, you could really improve on gestures and you can save painting for more difficult tasks, so that you can improve more there. When I get back to drawing again (after monday! yay), I'm gonna see what I can do with ponies that may help me, even if it is just to force me to draw when I don't know what else to draw. I hope you keep going with it, even if just a bit, cause no matter what you draw/paint, I enjoy them all :D. | ||
