No, this is not a joke/trolling thread. We don't need more filler posts asking if it is.

Remember to spoiler season 6 content, and clearly label your spoilers.

What would happen if Idra were a brony? Would TL implode on itself? Go down in a flamewar?

:-P

At the start, yes; then IdrA would gradually become more good-mannered (well it doesn't apply to all bronies I guess, but I can definitely say about myself and about many of my brony friends that we've become nicer, more emotional and better people in general since we've started to watch MLP), so he'd only be controversial due to being a brony afterwards. Which would still cause a lot of drama of course, and it would even potentially attract in more brony viewers who have not really cared/known about eSports before then.

We really need a progamer who's a brony. Sad that qxc didn't start watching MLP to spite the haters after all after joking about it on his twitter.

Idra becoming an open brony would be one of the greatest things ever witnessed. It might finally help him overcome his attitude and really crush face. IEM was a good example of what Idra can do when he sets his attitude aside. As much as I despise Zerg, it was great to see him win that tournament.

ROFL Harley (the EMT guy with the beard) just linked that video on his Twitter (I linked it to EMT last night). Fucking awesome! Obviously Rainbow Dash is Muscles Glasses.

It's a good show with flaws that tend to plague any show (my main gripe is the enforcement of gender roles... they're just reversed?). What I don't get is the rabid following. I want to blame internet memes for this show's over-the-top popularity. Yeah, it's cute. I appreciate cute. Yeah, it has a nice animation style. I appreciate that cartoons haven't seemingly bothered to put much effort into that for a long time. Yes, it has a good primary message about friendship even though it reinforces some negative ideas about other things.

Overall, I still find it disturbing to see what the internet following of this show has done with it. The majority of user-created content doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the show. The video above on this page, the comics, the fanfictions, the pony porn, there's even a fighting game in the works... really?

I watched the show. I even found parts of it quite amazing and well put together such as the musical scores and the sonic rainboom. I still find it mildly unsettling how it's being appropriated for more "adult" tastes... which just reinforces my idea that most of the popularity of this show is due to internet meme hipster mentality.

Props for trying the show out. There have been multiple notable posts (linked in the OP) of this topic regarding what some get out of the show, myself included. If you're curious as to why some of the fans are as fanatical as they are, that's a really good place to start.

Since this is the internet, nothing escapes stuff like rule 34. I for one don't clop to the porny threads. I'd say the amount of incredible fan work (check out equestriadaily.com, which is nearing 50 million hits) really outweighs the bad stuff.

All this being said, if the show's not your cup of tea, that's fine too. Not everyone gets as into it as the next person. At least you can say you took the chance and tried to find out what it's all about. Whether or not you become a brony is up to you.

And here's a random tidbit of information for everypony: http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/10/pony-voice-actor-charts.html

The chick that voice acts Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie also did Chichi from DBZ. I will never ever be able to unsee that.

Yes, most of it is due to internet, as well as the show itself being good. If it weren't for all the internet memes and crazy fandom, we probably wouldn't have this thread nor all the storm about it.

I think I explained it a lot of times, but there is no problem in doing it again: People tried to troll people into watching a 'girly show'. The irony of liking that show made people generate a fan base on it, both to counter-troll and because they liked it. Snowball effect into chaos theory, here we are.

Now, a cool cute/sad/dark/wtf/cute again comic for you guys ^_^

Zeph brought up a good point that I forgot to mention. The show and fandom is really genuine. Something purely meme-fueled would not be this big and it probably would've died out by now. The most popular memes really aren't this explosive for that long. A month or two maybe, but not 10 months and counting.

Oh, and regarding IdrA

He would probably say Rainbow Dash is the most awesome, but then say that Twilight is OP and Applejack is just bad, and that's why RD is the best. The community? Half would become idra-induced bronies, a fourth would stop liking IdrA and hate him, and the other fourth would hate him even more than before.

This or nothing would happen at all, who knows. IdrA would never watch the show though, prideful and stubborn as he is.

A lot of us who watch the show like it simply because it manages to create dynamic characters and tell compelling stories without any sort of negative drama to try to keep people interested. Quite simply its positive goodness in its purest form and it honestly encourages people to be nicer to each other. Hence the "I'm gonna love and tolerate the shit out of you" nonsense. Its one community where it is absolutely encouraged for people to just share happiness without any negativity attached to it whatsoever.

As for some of the content like comics, fics, and art, a lot of it is actually pretty well done. I originally thought that I would NEVER read a fanfic because thats just blasphemy and creepy and insert any other negative stereotype associated with them! But now I've read two and I'm probably going to read more in the future because they were honestly well written.

As for the memes, well this is the internet. Nothing will escape rule 34 no matter how horrifying it might seem and memes are just easy things for people to latch onto. Theres much better content being created by much more dedicated people if you can get past the memes.

Props to you though for watching the show first before judging. It might not be your thing and you know thats perfectly ok. The rest of us here will love and tolerate you regardless.

Edit:

Oh yes I forgot this point! Being genuine makes the fandom SO much stronger. Its something you just don't find in a lot of places on the internet.
Greatness, at any cost.

The "spirit" of the show? The one that basically amounts to "don't be a jerk", and is embraced not because the episodes say so, but because things are just a lot cooler that way?

The video above on this page, the comics, the fanfictions, the pony porn, there's even a fighting game in the works... really?

We're mostly all adults here, and perfectly capable of handling ourselves around such things (of which I sincerely hope the most offensive to your sensibilities isn't the fighting game…)

I still find it mildly unsettling how it's being appropriated for more "adult" tastes... which just reinforces my idea that most of the popularity of this show is due to internet meme hipster mentality.

Armchair analyzing is easy. Not so for actually finding a precedent, I'd dare to claim. Do you think you'd be able to point out a single other "meme" with an even remotely similar growth pattern?

WTF
My thoughts on this for a long while were that it was was a bunch of people trolling, and then it became the 'in' thing to say that you liked it or w/e.
I then read a number of people's 'discovery' stories, and watched some of the remixes of the show. One of the overwhelming sentiments was that people were surprised and confused at how much they enjoyed it after they started watching.
I decided I'd give it a shot, thinking I would laugh it off as people jumping on a retarded bandwagon.
For the first few episodes I was dubious, but once it got past the season opener stuff into the episodic episodes, I was hooked.
I am not entirely sure I know why I enjoy the show as much as I do, but I'll throw out some ideas.
It's pure distilled happiness with very polarized caricatures of characters. You know what to expect from each character, and when time and time again everything ends happily ever after it's in stark contrast to most other entertainment right now. I think we (namely the desensitized internet crowd) have been lacking this kind of almost purely positive interaction, and MLP fills that gap perfectly.

This is basically all that I was going to say. It's possible that he simply ran in to a bit too much of the less tasteful stuff. In my experience once you've decided to always avoid it... it's easy to avoid. There's so much good content produced by the community that sometimes I think my heart is just going to explode.

Here's some! Dunno if it's been posted here recently or not.

Awesome! I also find Fluttershy to be purely amazing. I also agree on your ideas - the sheer happiness and lovable characters make the whole show.

I wish I had a "conversion story"... Mine went about like this:
"Huh? My Little Pony on TL?"
*Read a bit of thread*
"Heh.. I wonder if it's actually good."
*Watch all 26 episodes in less than a week*
"Yep, it's good."

Hey welcome to the herd if it does not sound too cheesy, another Pony success story

I think your observations of some of the reasons you like the show are pretty good, the positive energy really does alot of people good when it is so lacking in other places in life, and the characters are strong and well written so you can really feel some empathy with them.

You do get a feeling for what to expect with the characters which creats a nice comfort zone however I feel that there is the occasional curveball and deviance of what you might expect the characters to react like in a situation also adds to the charm in the show (Fluttershy at the gala for example)

sorry if my grammar is bad I have some headache tonight.

edit: man this thread is moving fast tonight, it must be the american continentals getting busy posting, but its good night from Scotland everypony ^^

Again, I enjoyed the show and I'll keep watching it especially because Q is now in it. I just can't say that I'll go so far as adopting "bronyism."

I think that my general issue is a more personal one in that I really do want the ideas presented in the show of just learning to be nice to each other to take hold (especially on the internet). There's just something about things like the "Rule 34" effect and influence that seems to undermine that. Maybe I'm thinking about it too much, but is being nicer to people sarcastically an agreeable result? I also wonder about the efforts of trolling becoming just that much more intensified to match any positive influence of the show. Maybe I've just become too jaded by my exposure to the ugliness of internet culture over the years.

We're one of the most organized fandoms out there. Popular sites like Equestria Daily are kept strictly PG to let people simply enjoy the show and the community just as much as they like without worrying about the unsavory fringes (that everything ever has, mind you).

Don't just block the fan work just because of a few bad stuff. As someone said above, equestria daily is probably the best site on the regard, with a LOT of really, really good fan work in it. I also recommend you Brony State and their weekly movie sessions, where you interact with many fans as well. Occasionally there are some non scheduled streams which are really fun to watch, and you might even end up catching you favorite series in it!

Also, Regarding Rule 34, I was checking The rules of the internet(really slow site, oct 1st 2011 cache) and I think you might be pleased with the Rule 34b!
34. There is porn of it, no exceptions.
34b. There are ponies of it, no exceptions.

I lol'd hard when I saw it, but hey, it's true isn't it?

But really, "R34" is just more "common"(as in, easier seen) because people have some sickness over cartoons(see Avatar, Ben 10, every-single-anime-ever-made), and because there is so much of EVERYTHING of it. It's not like SC/WoW, where you spend you time playing the game: to spend your time with this, you actually make stuff. But it's easily avoidable, so don't worry too much about it

Also, "being nicer sarcastically" is only for haters. You can be nice with everyone. I mean, that's part of the idea behind it, right? Friendship?

Speaking of well written fan media, the newest story on EqD is something I would recommend to everyone. Fair warning though-MASSIVE amounts of DAWWWWWW, HNNNNHHHGGGHHH, and manly tears possible. Steel your heart. Based off of a comic posted a few days back.

Fluttershy all the way!

Yep, distilled happiness. Just like listening to The Flaming Lips.
