Yeah with the sheer volume of stuff created some of its bound to be weird, on the internet weird comes pretty quickly.
With Luna's story being a sad one, and the fact we dont see anything of her after the first 2 episodes means im really not suprised that theres so much stuff dedicated to her theres alot of potential with a character that we saw in her situation.
As far as background ponies are concerned I dont really "get it" either, but its nice to have a name for the face at least :p I enjoy some of the stories and stuff people come up with for them, I just take it for what its worth, a little creative fun for those that need an outlet and nothing I take very seriously.
I find those screaming for Derpy Hooves and the like to have segments of an episode to themselves and stuff quite irksome but the general idea behind fleshing out the background characters is pretty fun for the most part as long as no one takes some random guys weird ass idea for the background pony as fact, which i'm sure very few people do.

Well, I can understand the whole background pony craze, actually. With a fanbase as massive, creative, rabid, and passionate as the Broviet Union of Bronies Worldwide (BUBW), combined with how little actual content we get (currently, less than 22 minutes a WEEK on average!), every frame of animation is going to be picked apart for something, anything to hit with the fanon canon.
Background ponies are prime targets for this. They're consistently there, as many of their designs are copy/paste, so given their background activities they are given personalities and even backstories based around the most minute detail.
I do wholeheartedly agree with the whole episode Derpy Hooves segment(s). She is a background pony. To give her a foreground role will simply ruin the character and the show's integrity. The biggest fanservice ever bestowed upon us by the show's creators should be keeping Derpy's eyes the way they are and creatively using her in the background in a somewhat consistent manner. It's what made her popular in the first place, isn't it? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Fleshing out a background pony should be an entirely fanon thing, unless the show deliberately has a background pony that they plan to develop into a minor character from the get-go as part of some elaborate scheme.

I think people want to write fiction, or draw, or compose, but if they did it not with ponies then no one would look at it. So they adjust their work to contain ponies (and it's easy to do that) so that EQD gives them the exposure they're after.
It's not that ponies are necessarily so great they inspire all this, it's a creative outlet that did not exist before.
All the "crossover" fics are people wanting to write about the OTHER thing and then adding ponies; most the music is just what they wanted to do plus a title with the name of a pony (particularly the electronic stuff that doesn't fit the show at all).

You're right in that there's no hard deterrent against the above (largely on grounds of such things being completely unfeasible).
Fortunately, however, there tends to be a correlation between quality-of-work and inclination for sincereness. Ones with ability to make stuff stick have too much pride and too little need for desperate measures, so go ahead and put your mind at ease. No "foal play ahoof" here.

There is some validity to what you're saying, since "creative" is a pretty generous term to attach to the act of borrowing the framework and the characters of a universe created by other people and adding a few mis-match ideas of your own to it, but I think it's a little hard to gauge "inspiration" when it comes to music. Most of the time we're left guessing whether watching the show actually influenced the process if the work doesn't directly show it in some form, but it not being directly apparent doesn't mean it's not there and that the same piece of work would exist without it. I'm sure there are examples where you are absolutely correct, though.
The fics that I have read always draw upon the existing characters, the world, and relationships of the ponies in ways that require them to be about ponies and not some new characters that were created for that piece of text, but I can't say I've read any "crossover" fics so maybe we're discussing different things here.
Drawing is simple... ponies are fun, colourful, personable, pretty easy to draw, and people like looking at ponies. What else could you really want for a subject matter? None of it is meant to be the new Mona Lisa anyway.
I don't think there is anything wrong with any of this, sure it's a rather loose form of creativity, but there is no such thing as pure creativity anyway. It's all product of the fact that we have these amazing avenues of "publishing" your stuff (namely EQdaily), and that there are so many people thirsting for more and more pony content (because we get so little official material). All of this contributes to there being this culture of making fan-stuff, which in turn convinces other people to contribute as well and I think that's just wonderful. There is a lot of stuff worth looking at in there in my opinion, mixed in with the crap and shipping (shudder), and overall it's keeping me entertained at least!

I'm not entirely sold on that point. I think to some small degree it's people adding ponies to their work just so it gets exposure, but as someone debating making some fan content, I can honestly say in my case it's fueled entirely by my love of the show and not a desire to have an easy outlet for my work. I've had an idea for a fantasy novel kicking around since 2006 and if I end up writing this MLP fanfic, it will have exactly 0 to do with that other idea; it's completely inspirired by and based upon the MLP universe.
Just because I have a certain thought process doesn't mean the others making fan material share it, but I honestly think most of it is quite sincere. A lot of the crossovers strike me as "I wonder how fun this would be if it were crossed over", as I think a huge chunk of people making fanfics/fan art ponified just to get it EqD exposure would probably not get passed their screening system. Again, this is just me speculating, so take it with a grain of salt. It is just my opinion after all.
