I'd guess that between the big flashing neon signs that they get on reports, and the fact that there's quite a few mods on the staff, this isn't interfering too badly. Also, when there's one thread that's trying to devolve into a shitfest bantrap, it sends out crazy magic internet pheromones that attract the majority of trouble, concentrating it in one place, and reducing mod actions elsewhere. | ||

There are some topics that are really worth discussing, but can easily degenerate into bullshit from just a single ignorant post. Dealing with that requires a moderator who is vigilant in keeping that thread under control. Without that, you're basically saying that we can never talk about certain things. Without that vigilance, the rest of the mods would have just closed the thread for having accrued too much crap. This is a much better solution for TL. Or, to put it another way, your suggestion would let the assholes and/or ignorant people win. Screw that! | ||

When there are a couple of topics attracting most of the terrible posts, like a live relay thread or one about gay, black, transgender, immigrant dwarves in Alabama, then having a single mod take care of the thread leads to much faster and more effective moderation. Bad posts are like graffiti; if you don't kill them immediately they multiply. As there are multiple mods around, the only results that a single mod taking on a hot-button thread has are better, quicker moderation and less spillover into the rest of the forum. | ||
