Discussing politics from anything other than a strictly academic standpoint is a waste of time. Arguing only further entrenches people in their argument, even if you can completely expose the gaping flaws and illogical nature of someone's argument, 99% of the time they will simply entrench themselves further behind their stupid argument and continue to argue with you. One of the things I have learned is that it is often times just best to ignore people when they try to bring up politics, especially at a party or when out at a bar or restaurant. Just a complete waste of time. Unless your trying to hook up, but that's totally different because you will be pretending to agree with whatever the person says anyway... It really depends. The thing is that you only learn from people who have a similar sensibility than yours. The reason I wouldn't agree with a Libertarian is far beyond logic rationality or good arguments: it's a question of perception. If you perceive the world differently, you won't agree on anything no matter how long you discuss. Now, with people who share your sensibility, you can have very constructive discussions and I have learnt and changed a lot from people who had a different political opinion than mine. Usually, though they won't be at the extreme opposite of the political spectrum, that's obvious.

I understand "cuz" "u" and "y" but I'll be damn if I always have my "I"s right. The most irritating one for me is "would of" "should of" it doesn't even sound right. @Jayjay : It's faster in your head. It doesn't take a lot longer to write "you" instead of "u" and it doesn't make the reader feel like you're a 12 year old mindless kid (maybe you are 12 year old in that case please go on).

you and u I and i your and ur are and R because and cuz punctuation at the end of a sentence. Capital letter at the start of a sentence. I pretty much agree with this, capitalizing the "I" doesn't really bug me either way, but using proper spelling is simple manners. It shows you care enough about what you are posting to do things carefully, if you don't respect your writing enough to make the tiny effort that it takes to write out words, then how can we expected to care or take the ideas seriously? You clearly didn't have time to write out an extra two letters, so your idea is probably a similar half formed abomination. Which is why when someone writes with text abbreviations I usually don't even finish reading their post. That's my reasoning at least ^_^

If TL bans you for shit like one word posts theres no reason they shouldn't at least warn you for one letter word replacements. Using shortforms ('u' etc) makes sense in chat channels, where time is a factor and permanency doesn't exist. Or in games, where you often can't afford the time to write correctly. The fact that shortforms are quicker, though, is a downside on forums, especially TL. Consider how much effort TL staff (and the community) have put into making people THINK about their posts, makeing people take their time to post genuinely useful posts rather than just spam. Shortforms have two marks against them. First they make a post appear thoughtless and hasty, which can be disrespectful. You wouldn't use informal language in a court appearance, any more than you would wear sweatpants to a job interview. I'm not saying that TL is some super-formal place but its not 4chan either, and people show respect by putting a little more effort into their posts. The second problem with shortforms is that beyond just appearing thoughtless a post with chat-slang often IS thoughtless. It's very easy to knock off a simple comment to a thread using shortforms and whatnot. But since you didn't put very much effort into the post, it has much less value. This isn't something I really thought about until just now. I'm prone to short chat-slang filled comments myself sometimes. It's certainly something to think about - if we respect and value TL then we should post in a manner that suits it. The reason we love TL is that it ISN'T 4chan or the Bnet forums or even Reddit, so maybe we shouldn't be posting like we would on those other sites. Hmm. Maybe I should make this into a blog post or something.

Now see how much better and less ignorant I look when I type in complete sentences? Granted it took me a whole extra 5, maybe 10 seconds? But see how much better this reads in your mind, how much easier it is to follow my ideas? The difference is night and day. While I don't expect everyone to have perfect grammar and spelling (I for sure don't), I don't think capitalizing the first letters of sentences and spelling out full words is asking too much. It makes it much easier to read and understand posts and it also drastically raises the quality of the forum. I don't think "it's shorter" is an excuse, at least not on TL, where you are supposed to put at least some effort into your posts, spelling out "you" isn't going to drain too much of your precious time.
