Unfortunately there is an increasing subset of people that put more stock in not following the herd than critically evaluating where that instinct takes them. Which is why they lash out and call others sheep or variants or thereof, to maintain that self-image and clout of being an independent thinker who’s so much better equipped to cut through the BS. Civility is an important thing to learn and employ to discourse, sure. So too are sound constructions of arguments, earnest engagement in what people are actually saying rather than what one wants them to be saying for the sake of augmenting one’s position etc. And folks have a very narrow, warped view of what civility constitutes, to me anyway. I’d rather a truth expressed acerbically than a lie or a disingenuous discourse wrapped in the language of civility. Is it civil for a captainwaffles to post some hours long YouTube video with not even a few sentences explaining what value they gained from it and what point they’re making? Great I’ll just take a few hours negotiating this dumping of sources that one can’t even be bothered to summarised. There’s a whole generation, no doubt influenced by how content is packaged on YouTube etc who think they’re owed a debate on every issue no matter how deficient they are in argumentation, or frequently knowledge of said topic, and if they’re refused it’s everyone else’s fear of ideas that is the problem. | ||

I guess you can regard this as 'go full asshole' according to the dichotomy of options you gave me, while myself, I'm gonna think 'I guess this is what I have to do to make sure Jimmy doesn't shit up the thread for a week'. You know how to be a decent poster. Post like one when you come back instead of just picking fights. As tempted as I was to pipe up about this, I'm glad I didn't have to. | ||
