Hi TLers,
I'd like to know if someone has been to a Dreamhack festival in Sweden? Can you share your experience?
I live in France but want to go to DH winter 2012.
I plan to get the seat ticket which is about 100 euros, but it seems they only provide "seat" but no pc? You have to bring your own pc?? Also, I plan to sleep in their sleeping hall for 2 nights. Any info about the sleeping hall condition? It's certainly a big trip considering I have to book flights and hotels etc. I really need enough information to make the final decision.
I wrote them a mail asking for info but got only an automate reply which worries me a lot at the moment:
Thanx for the email we will respond within 3-4days.
Payments that has been drawn twice is allways fixed.

Yes you need to bring your own PC there, it's a LAN party. If you wanted to compete you should have attended the qualifying Dreamhack events (Dreamhack Open's)

Yes, you need to bring your own PC.
The sleeping halls are just halls without anything in them, so I would strongly suggest you bring an air mattress and a sleeping bag if you want to sleep there.
Some people sleep at their seats with a pillow on the keyboard, it's not exactly optimal but you don't have to go through the hazzle of finding a spot in the sleeping hall.
That said, it's really awesome and it's worth any trouble I've gone through so far in my 5 times there. : )

If you can afford it, I'd get an hotel room. Truth be told, a private shower and proper bed to sleep in becomes less of a luxury and more of a necessity with each passing day. If you don't invest in the hotel room, make sure you bring a sleeping bag and whatever else you need to be comfortable.
PC wise, yep, you bring your own machine. It's a true LAN party, worlds biggest LAN party to be specific Expect massive music and light shows. If you like gaming, you have to attend DH Winter once in your life. It's a lot more fun than the side stops as well in my opinion. If you can only attend 2 events ever, make it DH Winter and EVO.

You better avoid the mainstage area, at least if you dont like light shows, really really (and nonstop) loud music, sitting between tons of 14/15 year old people. The other areas should be better for gaming and playing tournaments.
|
You dont have to play games at dreamhack, when i go to dreamhack i buy an event pass and watch all the tournaments and other events going on.
Nowadays i would never go to DH to play with my computer, there are just so much other things you can do there
I must warn you, there are only 2 showers in the area and ALOT of people

I've done the sleeping halls with sleeping gear, and once without sleeping gear. If you are a heavy sleeper, just bring gear and you'll be fine. The halls are crowded and too noisy for me (a lot of kids being out of bounds since it's so goddamn fun to behave like an idiot when your parents aren't around), so if i try sleeping there, i'm exhausted and pissed off all day. Hotel room is the way to go for me. Many others think the sleeping halls just fine though.
As already provided, you bring your own PC. Or not! You can hang around the convent center or just watch the tournaments all day if you want. Bringing a computer is a big hazzle and it costs more, if you think you won't be miserable without it, ditch it.
Apart from that: all the lightshows and concerts and that stuff is in the D-hall. AVOID THE D-HALL. It's filled to the brink with children pumping retarded hardstyle, yelling stupid "jokes" and doing other stuff that nerdkidz like to do. All the other halls are calmer, won't make your brain explode, and from there, you can go to the d-hall to get your desired dose of the kids and leave.

I had a lot of fun just watching some tournaments and idling around. I also ate a lot of food and sweets which became a strange obsession as everywhere on DH people are eating, eating, eating... Pro tip is to actually eat good food, fruits and so on and not just gorge yourself on sugary stuff. It always makes things like this so much more fun without the headaches caused by too many red bulls or stuffing your face with candy.

This will be my 14th Dreamhack and there´s alot to do there except just gaming. In my opinion you have more fun there without having a seat and a PC.
You have a lot of things to do like trying out new games, compete in tournaments that are held at the companies expos. Watch A LOT of Esport overall not just SC2. Meet more new fans and just have a chat with the pros and commentators etc.
The sleeping halls are good enough if you brind a madrass, pillow and sleeping bag. I should point out thou that if you´re bringing in your own computer you will have a lot of luggage for sure. The flight will be quite expensive and hotels for that matter are already booked within 5km.
The food is pretty cheap but not very healthy. You will get hungry quickly again and the toilets usually are a mess after a couple of days.
I would recommend you buying a visitors ticket. Bring some light luggage and enjoy the event as a visitor! You will have plenty to do without having a computer !

I've been to one DH winther and it was awesome! I didn't have any trouble finding sleeping space but I was in hall D. It's the largest one, but it has REALLY loud music blasting 24/7. All the pro's are in hall C competing, so thats where I'm going this time It's nice to be able to watch them play if you are particular interested in a game. So cool to see all the progaming personalities walking around. And if you go, remember to also signup for the tournaments beforehand! I think there is a packlist on the site. But most important of all!!! Bring a plug for your computer that you are sure will work in sweden! I didn't last year and I had to go all around town and I still didn't find any :S In the end I got a guy from hardware support to use a swiss army knife to cut my plug so it fit xD Also if your a snob like me think about finding a spot outside the area to get food or bring some. The food at dreamhack SUCKS!
But it's a great experience and I'm going to this one :D

Did you think the food sucked? While I wasn't blown away exactly it was relatively cheap (60-80 SEK), you got a lot of food and it was pretty good. It also included some vegetables and felt relatively healthy, not just a slab of fat-drooling pizza and a coke.
Edited to not sound like a jerk.

Thanks guys! These are very informative.

I don't know man, I think we can all agree that it's not exactly gourmet meals being offered. You kind of get what you pay for.

Can only say that DreamHack is fucking epic Food and drinks are kinda expensive but ok.

This will be my first dreamhack too. Just bought an event pass, I'm not interested in playing myself. I've already booked a hotel several weeks ago. I'm so looking forward to this event.
Just one question: In which Hall will the SC2 games be casted?

Or we can form a TL group.
Two questions please:
1. What do I do with a PC there? Join a lan then what? It's just like that I go to a PC Bang in Korea? That doesn't sound too exciting, in fact I've been to PC Bang a lot with friends. It's just Europeans don't fancy PC Bang much like Asians do.
2. What do people do during night? There are matches going on during night??
Thanks.

Are you allowed to bring your own drinks and food (candy) inside?
Going there for the first time, looking forward to it a lot!

1: You play video games, go to the esport area and watch starcraft and have a good time
2: sleep or play video games, its really hard to keep track of the time

1. If you are not going there with friends I personally don't think there is much of a point in buying a seat ticket. You'll likely end up playing/sitting by yourself a lot of the time. Think of it as taking a seat at an internet café where you know no one, and where seats are randomly empty at extended periods of time (people go do other stuff). Although if you plan on participating in BYOC tournaments it can be worth it. Also helps if you know other gamers through the interwebz (easier before b.net 2.0).
2. Exhibition area closes down at night. People sit at their computers or sleep. No matches during night.
Keep in mind you don't necessarily have to bring a stationary computer. Can bring a lap top, whether you have a seat ticket or an event ticket doesn't matter (although with an event pass you ahve to creatively scout for free electrical sockets to recharge. don't be shy and you'll get by even without a seat).
