There are only 151 pokemon. And missingno.
i strongly disagree, there are 251. the 2nd generation gameboy color games were the shit! it went sharply downhill after that though edit: YES PALJAS, YES.
Gen 3 was absolutely a low light for the series (Fire Red/Leaf Green were okay) Gen 4 was okay, HG/SS were pretty amazing though Gen 5 was surprisingly awesome. BW1 felt a lot like playing through Red/Blue for the first time.
I envy you. After about gen 4 or so, I was never really able to recapture that feeling of playing some of the pokemon games for the first time, with that sense of magic and adventure ;n;
It helped that pokemon died for me after Gen 3 and I only begrudgingly played through Platinum because I felt like I should. And then I was really bored one day and decided to play Gen 5 and it was like I was 8 all over again.
Ahhh maybe I should try that too, not touch any poke game for a long, long time before trying another one again. THAT feeling of just picking up a pokemon game when you're 8 or something is exactly it.
I never got my hands on hg/ss and the first time I played gen3 I was lk 17 plus they were terrible anyway. FR/LG I felt were also dissapointing I feel like they should have been able to add more to the game given that it was a gba game edit: the discussion here is telling me that maybe a should give gen5 a shot

weird, I like gen 3 the most. Guess its just a matter of what you play first. I thought gen 5 was pretty good and kollin is also a heretic for not liking gen2
Leaf green was and is my favourite Pokemon game, it was the first I played and I adore it to this day. That as well as AoM and some random GameCube games my cousin had got me hooked on gaming I'd say.

I have a lot of favourite pokemon and I think its really important to have favourites too. Every time I interview someone for LoL Staff one of the questions I ask is for them to list their favourite pokemon.
For me personally, I found the Johto series (GSC and HGSS) as some of my favourite games. I quite liked Gen III quite a lot and I did a lot of competitive battling and stuff because the Battle Frontier was just amazingly fun. The music stands out a lot as Lilycove, Mt Pyre and Abandoned Ship all have very strong emotive themes along with distinct themes like Ever Grande Theme. There were a lot of trumpets used too like in Victory Road and I can't wait for the remakes to come out with all new updated music. I disliked the stall meta a lot though, and I will forever hate SkarmBliss.
But Gen II and the remakes will forever be my favourites. It has some of the best music such as Azalea Town, Olivine City and original Goldenrod (the remake is not as impactful and lost a lot of character). Gen II did have a levelling and exp problem however even in the remake, which I assume is because the story is stretched so heavily. It's one of the few major faults in my opinion in an otherwise very strong game. DPP in Gen IV was one of the low points for me. I never quite got into it much. The music was alright but a bit lacklustre to me, and if it wasn't for HGSS I wouldn't have cared much for it. In the competitive scene, the new split to physical/special was pretty cool and the rise of sweepers (both CB/CS and set-up sweepers) was a fresh breath and very fun and dynamic to play. I particularly loved trying to fit in Sub-Petaya Empoleon into anything I could although one of the funnest teams I ever used was a Para-Con-Flinch hax team based around Haxkiss and other Serene Grace nonsense heh. I have mixed feelings about Stealth Rock though.
Gen V I went into with no expectations after Gen IV and I think that meant I enjoyed it much more. I'd probably rate it just under the Gen II (and Gen II remake in Gen IV). The story line felt good, I enjoyed the new pokemon, just the fresh experience was lots of fun. The Unova region also has some amazing music like the Dreamyard/Pinwheel Forest theme and N's Castle. Even the general city music like Castelia, Floccesy, Nimbasa and Icirrus City or the bike music felt alive. The Plasma Theme was also really cool. Storywise it's still a bit cliche but I liked it and it felt really good that BW2 built upon BW rather than just making a rehash of the story. Also, the animated trailer was really cool and brought back some memories of watching the anime as a child.
In terms of the competitive scene it's pretty crazy to think the Blaziken is now Ubers and that former OP stalwarts such as Cresselia ex-Ubers Wobbufett are now BL/UU and the such. Weather runs rampart and is really irritating which makes me sad but I suppose it was inevitable given that being able to eek out any advantage you can is standard. I don't play it much though.
As for other spin offs Mystery Dungeon is pretty cool. Plus, the animated trailers for Gate to Infinity was awesome!
Back track here..... i thought there were only 150 pokemon and that the mew/151 was just a trap to make you play so much that your pokemon blue stops working and wont save any longer and you are sad from that day on becuase no matter how hard you play and hope that the file will be there when you turn it back on, it never is. So it is possible to get mew? (of course missingno is legit, but he also almost messed up my game.... guess you are not supposed to catch him)

Gen 1: Green Red Blue Yellow Gen 2: Gold Silver Crystal Gen 3: Ruby Sapphire Emerald FireRed LeafGreen Gen 4: Diamond Pearl Platinum HeartGold SoulSilver Gen 5: Black White Black2 White2

It's possible via glitching, else attending specific nintendo events.
Pokemon Red all the way! (I would really love to play fire red, but I just can't seem to get into it again.)
I invested 200+ hours on my Pokemon Red. Then the internal battery died and I lost everything. I will probably go as far as gold/silver. Pokemon started to get more ugly as the gens went on. Arcanine forever!

Thank you sir, i always just called it out as cheating if you glitched/got it at the events, but that was mainly to fight with my friends. I still will defend only having 150 pokemon (the rest of the generations just give me headaches) but it is cool you can catch this mew dude!

Well if you read all the journal entries in the Cinnabar island mansion it tells of the story of how they discovered Mew as a pokemon, so it's definitely within the lore of the first gen games.
As someone studying marketing and consumer psychology, Pokemon is really amazing. Especially when you read the varied reactions to various generations on gaming forums and the like. Its quite fascinating.
For example, very very few people hate/dislike Gen 1, because for a lot of people that was their first introduction to the franchise back when they were approximately in the target age bracket (generally any where from 7-12). However after Gen 1, there is a lot of variance in reception. Often seen from the typical "There are only 150/151 pokemon" statement that litters any discussion (even this one). This tends to be due to aging of the person.
If you were on the end of the Gen 1 target age, by the time Gen 2 was coming around, you were a teenager and progressing in all the associated psychological changes. i.e. striving to be seen as mature, distancing yourself from things seen as childish. If you were in the lower end of the spectrum, you probably enjoyed Gen 2.
Gen 3 seems to be the generation that receives the most dislike, as the entire Gen 1 introduced age bracket is in adolescence. Very common that the Gen1 kids completely ignored Gen 3. Though there are of course exceptions.
Gen 4 & 5 saw a bit of a mixed bag of opinions. People introduced to Gen 1 at its inception are nearing adulthood/young adults, and nostalgia hits them pretty hard, they get involved in pokemon again and tend to rate it based on a broader range of criteria, as expected from a experienced consumer.
