Saturday, Jan 07 8:00am GMT (GMT+00:00)
This event is now completed. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Training Day was a 10-hour Diamond and Master-level PvT training session in which eight players and four coaches (QXC, Masq, CecilSunkure and NrgMonk) participated. Over the coming days, I will be creating highlights of the original videos to allow quick access to the best bits. In the meantime, you can find the complete VODs of the entire day on the following streams' pages:

+ Show Spoiler +Welcome to the new, leaner Training Day OP! For the longer, original post, see the spoiler at the bottom. This thread is dedicated to Training Day, January 7th, 2012. From Saturday, Jan 07 8:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) to Saturday, Jan 07 6:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00), I will be joined on my stream by eight Diamond and Master league players and four coaches. We will spend the day devoted to learning all there is to learn about the Protoss v Terran matchup. The Coaches qxc + Show Spoiler [bio] +![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/S05yc.gif) You've probably heard of him. Masq + Show Spoiler [bio] + CecilSunkure + Show Spoiler [bio] +If you've spent any time at all in the SC2 strategy forum, Randy " CecilSunkure" Gaul requires no introduction. He is best known around these parts as the author of a remarkable number of excellent strategy guides (list here) and a pair of excellent blogs on computer programming ( here and here). He is also a member of the young team KiwiClone Army and has agreed to offer us his high-level insight into the Protoss side of the PvT matchup! If you'd like to offer your thanks and support to Cecil, please head over to his fan club or drop by this thread to learn how you can get your paws on him for some 1 on 1 coaching! NrGmonk + Show Spoiler [bio] +NrGmonk describes himself as "that guy from the strategy forum." A member of team NrG, he is indeed well known for his excellent contributions to TL's SC2 strategy discussions, examples of which can be found in his profile. The PlayersAll eight player slots are now filled! Thanks so much to everyone that expressed interest. If you are still interested in playing, please drop by the chat during the event and say hi; if anyone doesn't show up or has to leave early, I'll bring people on from chat to fill their slots. The Training Day cadre are: AmericanUmlaut + Show Spoiler [bio] +Hi! My name is Benjamin Stürmer, and I'm an American expat working full time as a computer programmer in Düsseldorf Germany and occasionally as a freelance Japanese/German/English translator and interpretor. When I'm not playing SC2 or hanging out with my awesome little 1 1/2 year old daughter, I like to play the piano, go out ballroom dancing with my wife and juggle. Excludos + Show Spoiler [bio] +Andreas is a 22 year old Electrical Engineering major from Norway. In addition to his computer game habit, he enjoys playing sports and is currently interested in MMA. Of himself, he says. "...like most people here, my life revolves around computers. I simply love playing computer games, and I work part time at a local computer store when I'm not sitting in front of one at home." 7mk + Show Spoiler [bio] +Thomas is a 23 year old medicine student from Germany. He lives in Leipzig with his girlfriend and their little dog, and when he's not playing SC2 or studying, he enjoys making music (even some SC-related music before SC2 came along) and photography. He likes to visit European SC2 events and hang out with other TL nerds. He says, "Celebrating on stage after HerO won Dreamhack was by far the best SC-related moment I've had and probably one of the best in general." Chelch + Show Spoiler [bio] +Alex is a computer programmer and a high-diamond Protoss from the UK. Of his own play, he says, "I think PvT is my best matchup by far, but that I'm always looking to improve on anything!" Defex + Show Spoiler [bio] +Daniel is a physics student from Denmark. He has been playing SC2 since beta, and has even spent time as a coach himself, something that will surely be a great contribution to our Training Day experience. In addition, he is an elite national-level athlete (100 meter dash) and has toured Europe as a drummer! Blazinghand + Show Spoiler [bio] +Noah is an undergraduate economics student in the USA and works as a part time computer programmer. He says of himself: "I am half-Korean which gives me all kinds of sweet Starcraft skills. I play saxophone and enjoy long walks on the beach." Utikiz + Show Spoiler [bio] +Bjørk is our youngest participant at just 15 years of age. He lives in Denmark, where he attends school and plays piano in a band with his friends. He has been playing SC2 for almost a year, and is in his own words, "would love to take part in this since well... TvP isn't my greatest matchup, and i love to meet new people." GzStrom + Show Spoiler [bio] +Connor is an engineer from South Africa. In addition to his master rank as Terran, he's achieved a diamond ranking as random. Where to find usStreams: Main stream 7mk Excludos Chelch Blazinghand GzStrom UtikizI'll add more streams as players and coaches confirm that they'll be able to stream. Any time I'm not either observing coaching or being coached myself, I'll make sure to let the viewers know what stream they can switch to to follow the coaches. I had hoped to get Training Day featured so that you could see all of the associated streams in the side bar, but unfortunately Training Day doesn't meet TL's requirements for a featured event. Maybe next time! TeamSpeak: The main group will be communicating via Skype and on TL's TeamSpeak server. Please come and set up your own TeamSpeak rooms for your level of play and matchup! IRC: I will be setting up an IRC chatroom for everyone to hang out in. Drop by! Talk about how amazingly bad I am! Find a practice partner! I will update this with the name of the chatroom once I've set it up. DonationsQuite a few people have PMed me on the subject of helping me out financially with Training Day. Thanks so much for your offers! At the moment, though, my costs for coaching time and hardware are not that much and I wouldn't be comfortable asking for help. If that changes, I'll update this accordingly. + Show Spoiler [The original OP] +One Day. One Matchup. One Goal.We are Team Liquid - a community bound by our shared passion for Starcraft. The vast majority of us will never be able to devote our lives to the game that we love; instead, we find time between our jobs, our families, our studies, and our other responsibilities. And that's a good thing - for most of us, Starcraft is just a hobby. But what if, for just one day, you could shut out the rest of the world, gather together with your Team Liquid brethren (and sistren) and devote yourself completely to the study of the game? And what if you were joined by a couple of professional coaches to guide your studies and help focus your efforts? Well, those are ridicuous questions, because it's obvious that it would be fucking awesome. And so I'm doing it. I am looking for seven awesome individuals who burn to master the PvT matchup and have a Saturday to devote to that pursuit. PlayersAre you a Diamond or Master League Protoss or Terran? Do you have a microphone and a burning passion to improve? Are you a generally awesome human being? Then sign up! Reply to this thread using the following template: ID on EU: Capybara.179 Your race: Protoss Your league: Diamond Can you stream/record the day? Yes That's it! Before the big day comes, I'll just ask that you have TeamSpeak, Skype and an IRC client installed, since that's how we'll all be keeping in touch. Don't worry if you can't stream. I'd just like to make sure that at least a few people in the group are able to record our experience, since I feel like an archive of many hours of practice and coaching in a single matchup could be a useful resource to the community. QuestionsWill this cost money?Yes, but not for you. I will be getting coaches, but I will pay them myself for two reasons: I won't ask professional players to risk not getting what they were promised due to douchebaggery, and it seems like a nice thing to do. I will organize a donation account to support the event, though, and I'll be grateful for any assistance I can get, but I won't be demanding any money from anybody. Why only PvT?I hate Zerg. Okay, that's not true. In fact, I offrace as Zerg. It's just this: This is the first ever Training Day, and I want to keep it simple. A small number of players practicing one matchup for one day seems manageable. I hope that in the future, it will be possible to have a bigger group practicing more matchups, but for a first event, I'm keeping it small and simple. Why do you hate lower-league players?I swear, I don't! In a perfect world, I would organize groups for every league! This is something I absolutely want to be able to do in the future, but this time around, as I wrote above, I'm trying to keep this thing simple. What if I can't participate? You're not on EU? You haven't quite made Diamond yet? You signed up too late? Not to worry! I will be streaming my experience all day, and I'll be encouraging everyone else to do the same. Watching someone else get coached isn't as good as getting coached yourself, but it's something! Do post to this thread if you're interested though, even if you don't fit the criteria this time around; I'd like to see how much interest there is in the community for future Training Days! What if I'm not a generally awesome human being?Asking that question using a Team Liquid account is paradoxical. ParticipantsI'll keep this list updated with the accounts of interested players as people post. The lists are obviously pretty full, so I can't guarantee you you'll get a spot, but please go ahead and sign up anyhow! I'll involve as many people as I possibly can, and it's very helpful for me to know how much interest an event like this has so that I can try to plan a better structure for next time! I will be sending out PMs as the event gets closer to confirm who can make it, and I'll let you know a week or two in advance if you've been selected to join the core group. If not, though, please come join us on the streams and in IRC - there will be plenty of other players to train with! + Show Spoiler [Protoss] +Capybara.179 Bourne.178 Excludos.369 Watercrystal.703 Chelch.892 Sansai.673 ODKStevez.782 NexCa.244 Cyro.719 ELecTro.307 Noticimus.858 pal.387 FireFish.313 Serge.485 Draken.784 JanZai.184 eVoidray.544 Zaxon.727 Vector.904 Glythrin.141 Federigo.109 MaxtoR.643 Tech.129 Dean.452 Bowser.256 MGǂJedi.185 Drolla.595

I for one think its a brilliant idea, if I still played SC2 I would absolutley be up for it, and I think its awesome that you are organizing it. ^_^

I like the initiative. Are you going to structure this at all in terms of what you're working on at any given time?

This is really cool idea: deliberate, specific, practice. But maybe you're planning a bit too far ahead? o.o

On October 08 2011 03:21 Animostas wrote: This is really cool idea: deliberate, specific, practice. But maybe you're planning a bit too far ahead? o.o The timing is mostly because I will spend all December moving into a new apartment that will have a room suitable to hosting this event. I didn't want to wait to announce my plans, though, because if I didn't just man up and post my intentions on TL, I was leaving myself the option to turn chicken and not do it. Now the post is up, so I'm committed.
There have already been several comments that this is too far away, though, and the whole point of the this thread is to allow me lots of time to collect and respond to feedback, so I'm making my first change: Training Day will be taking place January 7th rather than the 21st. This is absolutely, positively as early as my personal life will allow it to take place (unless I can find seven people willing to take a day of vacation and do it during the week), so as much as I'd like to move it a bit further forward, it's simply not an option.

Replacing half the sheep with Banelings in sheeps' clothing would give me really good odds of taking out the wolf with sheep left over.

I am choosing between Terran and Protoss and thus have a relevant understanding of both (with my strongest matchup for Terran being T vs Z, then T vs P, and then T vs T, and P vs Z, P vs T and P vs P respectively).
Great idea!

I swapped to protoss for season 3. I have over 5k games experience as zerg but I am desperate to reach that master level with Protoss, like I almost did with zerg and this would be a great oppertunity to improve myself and help others in my situation ^^
Be sure to pm if I get selected for anything as I may miss something in this thread as I expect it to get quite big ^^

Great idea, hope it ends up a smashing success. How about offering prizes or just recognition for build innovations or map-specific strategies? It'd be fun to get everyone working hard ahead of time and see some new strategies on the training day.
Sadly, I play zerg pretty much exclusively. My T and P are nowhere near even diamond level =D
Good luck!
|
As a platinum Terran I feel left out. But this is an excellent idea and perhaps if I break into diamond at the start of the season and there are still slots left I may sign up then.
Good luck
|
Loving this idea. Pity I play as zerg AND i'm in plat. lol. have fun tho!
|
So this is fucking awesome, but I play zerg and my terran is only masters team league and my toss is only like low diamond
Oh well, will definately sign up for a ZvX day
|
The response this is getting is just fantastic! I laid awake half the night, trying to figure out what I could do to involve more of you, because it's obvious that way more people are interested in this idea than will fit into my concept. It's really important to me that I find a way to offer the rest of you at least some way to be involved.
So here's what I propose. I'm planning to set up a private channel on the TL Teamspeak server for communication between the group and an IRC channel as a backup. I suggest that anyone interested in joining us simply tune into the streams to get some coaching second hand, and gather in groups of similar skill levels and from the same bnet server in their own Teamspeak channels. Also, I'll be inviting everyone to join us on IRC, and I will pass questions from the community on to the coaches during our Q&A sessions. This will make it possible for people from every league and on every server to take part in some way, even if I can't include you in the core group of participants.
To all you Zergies - this time around, just come and hang out with us. I'm sure you'll find people who'd love to spend the day practicing their XvZ, and I promise that the next Training Day will have something for you!

No worries! I'll check accounts when I start sending out PMs to everyone who expresses interest here, so if you're platinum now and diamond then, no worries. And of course, like I said before, I'm going to do my best to set this up so that there's practice and fun to be had for everyone who joins us on the stream or on Teamspeak and IRC, so even if you're still Platinum, just drop by and find someone to practice with!

I'm holding off on announcing the coaches that will be involved until we get a bit closer to Training Day, but I currently have two confirmed pros coming to coach and two more that will be joining us if they have the time. I'm super excited to let everyone know who's coming to play with us, because it's fucking sweet, but I want to have a chance to build up a bit of hype closer to the actual event .
I will say this: The pros I've got confirmed so far are both Protoss, and I'm having a hard time getting a Terran. I know a couple of the Terrans who are signed up are really good, and hopefully they'll be willing to help out with the coaching, but if anyone has an idea for a Terran pro who would be a good candidate for joining us, please let me know!

Hey, I would like to participate. My TvP could use some training although I already have a general understanding of the Matchup. I am a master level terran player and I am already working on my TvP so I can definitely give helpful advice to diamond level players and help finding flaws in the play of players at my level. As said my TvP isn't my best match up so I would be very thankful to receive some tips and to spend some dedicated time practicing the matchup with other people dedicated to improving rather than whining about imbalances.

The current status of the project is: I have three coaches confirmed and am sorting through some PMs I've received from folks interested in the fourth coaching slot, so we'll have two Protoss and two Terran coaches, with one very well known name for each race and one less-known but nonetheless awesome individual.
And since TL is the home of announcements of announcements: I'll be updating the OP with the identities of our coaches starting sometime next week, once I've got the fourth coach confirmed. The only stuff that's left for me to do is buy some hardware (a nicer mic and camera) and actually move into my new apartment. Barring some kind of disaster with getting my new DSL line hooked up, it looks like smooth sailing for Training Day to go off as planned on the 7th. In about two weeks, I'll start sending out PMs to people who have expressed interest in joining me on the stream and get that core team of eight players put together.
Thanks again to everyone who's posted in this thread, especially people who can't participate but took the time to post here in support of my idea! I really hope that I'll be able to put together a great show for the community. :-D

Sounds like fun, pvt is by far my favourite matchup.

Lol, I love how a bunch of terrans joined up after qxc's post. I think this is an awesome idea and would be interested in hosting an NA or SEA version if it's successful and you want to do it again.

Hahaha It's on my birthday :D Gonna learn some good stuff; that's a present!
I won't be able to participate unfortunately, but I will gladly watch the VODs if there are some!

Updated the OP! It's ON!
Only one month to go before Training Day!
The first thing I want to say here is "thank you!" to all the people who have posted here, and especially to all the people who have PMed me with offers of help. If Training Day is going to be a success, it's going to be because of your participation, and I absolutely appreciate the support more than I can say.
And now the moment you've all been waiting for: It's time to start announcing some coaches!
If you've spent any time at all in the SC2 strategy forum, Randy " CecilSunkure" Gaul requires no introduction. He is best known around these parts as the author of a remarkable number of excellent strategy guides (list here) and a pair of excellent blogs on computer programming (here and here).
|
One more update for today: To accommodate the schedules of some of our participants, who are on Pacific Time, I've moved the start back an hour to 09:00 CET. The end will still be 19:00 as scheduled.
|
Alright, things are heating up! I've rewritten the OP and I've added all the coaches that have confirmed so far.
Including the IM all-killer himself, Mr. Kevin "QXC" Riley.
I am getting so excited about this :-D.
|
|
Aaaaah I'd love to do this so much but I am on holiday that week. x'( That totally sucks.
P.S. Sorry, I totally forgot about adding you! I'll get right on it.
|
I would love to be involved!
|
I'd like to be one of the players -- can stream as well, though I play on NA. If I get an EU account can I join up?

Given the number of people who have already signed up, though, I wouldn't be able to guarantee you a spot in the main group of eight players. I don't want to discourage anyone from signing up, but I wouldn't want someone to spend the money on an extra account just for the chance to play with us.

cool stuff, wish I would have read about this earlier, I suppose its a bit late for signing up

Okay, PMs have been sent out and most of the participants have been finalized.
I'd like to apologize sincerely to every person who took the time to post in this thread but didn't get selected. I really appreciate the support, and I'd love to have every one of you on the stream, but there's just no way to effectively train with fifty people. If anyone can't make it or has to leave early for some reason, I'm planning to pull replacement players from the audience, so come hang out and be friendly, and I'll see if there's a way to get you involved. Also, I am already making the first plans for the next Training Day, so assuming that this is not a complete disaster, just keep an eye open and maybe you can get involved the next time around.
Also, don't forget that there will hopefully be lots of players in chat and on the TeamSpeak server who aren't on stream but are looking for training partners for the day! I'm hoping that my stream ultimately only shows a fraction of the awesome P on T violence spawned by this thread.
One more thing: I've been putting together little bios of all the participants. If you're looking forward to watching Training Day and are curious to know a bit more about me and the other players than our screen names, go check them out. I never cease to be amazed at how interesting the people hiding behind TL accounts tend to be.
|
God yes! This is just what I need, my PvT is just hideous, I can't wait. This is like a late Christmas present.
|
Alright, with the additions of 7mk, Chelch and Utikiz, we've got just a single Terran slot yet to fill. If you really want to get in on the action and haven't gotten a PM yet, drop me a line and say hi!

Hmm think Take would give him a free PC just like huk got his year ago for TL Attack. Also great idea, i wish there were more spots so i could play too... :/
|
That is so awesome. My worst matchup is TvP.
|
Just a week to go! The worst of the danger is behind us; Deutsche Telekom managed to connect my line and even the incompetence of the Vodafone technical people - I was literally hung up on because I insisted what they were telling me was causing an error - couldn't stop me from configuring my DSL modem. After weeks of thirst, the Internet is again flowing. I've tested my stream and it looks like everything is working correctly!
Yay!
I have been contacted by a couple of people who are high level players and would be interested in helping out a group of people independantly of the stream on Training Day. I think that's a fantastic idea! If you are such a person, please drop a message in here so that people know you'll be around, and send me a PM with your contact information. I'll make sure to mention that you're offering help on the stream and where you're to be found so that people can come find you.

I'm not sure if it's an event on TL, but here are the streams you can find it on:
|
It won't be listed as a TL event. I requested it, and it was rejected, and that's totally cool as far as I'm concerned. It's not reasonable to expect TL to list every event run by anyone; the sidebar would be totally useless if they did that. If this is successful and enough people are interested in it, though, maybe a future Training Day can be featured .

Oh man I better start thinking about this. Gotta get my sleep cycle all whacked out so I can be up at the right time, get all my sodas and stuff to stay up late-- this is gonna be super great.
On the list of things I'm looking into (theory-wise) is timing for my gasses, teching, 2x engi bay and upgrades when 1 rax FE vs a 1 gate Fe into 2x Forge then Robo, which is the FE build I encounter most often. I'll also be looking to improve my mechanics, control, etc. But really I start to get lost after "ok he's getting 2x ups".

Sorry if this was asked before, but would it be possible to make VODs/youtube vids of this? Or maybe add links to the OP if videos will be stored on streamer's sites. Can't watch the event live but I imagine this could be extremely helpful, would love to be able to watch it later.

I'll imagine everyone who's streaming will be leaving VODs (at least I will). But as this is a long event, it will most likely be a very long VOD. It could be worth to put the most important bits and pieces on youtube.

I'll be saving the VoD of this on my stream, if for no other reason than my own viewing later. I'll drop a link in here after the event. It would be somewhat difficult to upload a 10 hour VoD to youtube, though, but if you're fine with a twitch.tv VoD then worry not.

Sucks that you won't, would have been so cool if you were involved with this
EDIT: It seems I can't read, I hope you can make it even though it overlaps with HSC :3

To the question about VODs: twitch.tv automatically generates VODs from streams, so the whole thing will be up from every player's perspective for anyone who's interested. I'll also be going over at least my own stream in the days after Training Day and compiling a catalogue of time stamps so that you can jump to discussions about topics that are of interest to you. I'll try to do the same for at least one of the Terran players, too.
22.5 hours to go! I'm on vacation today, working out the final details and making sure all the logistics are lined up. I think this is going to be a fun event, and I'm looking forward to seeing all of you tomorrow!

I checked over most of the streams as they where running. There was a small numbers of viewers most of the time. Considering the event lasted 10 hours tho, I consider it a good number. Should be even easier for people to watch after we've uploaded / highlighted the important events (like when the coaches was..coaching )

Just updating to let you know where you can find my videos of the day. They can all be found at http://no.twitch.tv/excludos/videos. Funny no one mentioned throughout the entire day how incredibly low my voice was so I apologize beforehand about that.
I have highlighted the 2 parts where I have CecilSunkure coaching me. He reviews 3 replays, shows me a build, and then coaches me live through two games.

Your videos are only stored temporarily on twitch.tv until you tell it you want to store them permanently. I think they're there for 14 days.
Check xsplit to see if your videos are stored on your computer. If they are you can reupload them to twitchtv
|
Yeah I never found that permanent save button, still dont And well it hasnt been 14 days yet and I dont get why it would delete several but spare one of the videos recorded on that day.

have you tried doing it via justin.tv? go to the url but with justin.tv/username instead of twitch.tv-- it'll be the same, but you may have more UI options.
If that doesn't work, go to the twitch.tv tech support forums and they should sort it out.
