Locking = no one but mods can post, but the thread stays in the forum it started in. Used primarily if a thread had a very good start (quality OP/posts) and a very bad end (typically a flame war that brings any useful discussion to a halt).

Closing = thread goes to the dungeon that is the closed threads forum. If a thread has little to no redeeming factors, it gets closed.

How come if u mention 4chan in an OP the thread get closed? I used them as an example of a DDoS attack and despite being a quite decent light-hearted discussion on how TLs would cope, it got closed

Is there a sandbox-type thing on TL, where I can form my long and heavily formatted posts without fear of accidentally hitting "post message" instead of "preview"? Not that I've done that recently and had to ninja-reflex edit delete or anything. And over-reacted and pm'd a certain admin.

Search for "sandbox" didn't reveal anything =/

And btw, is there a proper etiquette to request a thread be locked/closed?

Use preview. If you do it then simply edit your post and explain that you accidentally hit post rather than preview. It's not an issue.
