I will also post a "Wanted" section sometime in the next month, as the CSL grows, we are looking for more dedicated people to help make our growth possible. Stay tuned, and keep checking for updates!
Articles CSL: Re-Live Season 2 : Peter Zhang recaps CSL+ Season 2! Check it out CSL: Re-Live Season 3 : Duran Parsi recaps the 3rd Season of the CSL! CSL: Re-Live Duke vs UCSD : Mona Zhang recaps the CSL Grand Finals between two powerhouse teams.

About the CSL: The Collegiate Starleague aims to provide a competitive and fun environment for all colleges and universities throughout North America to display their Starcraft(2) talents. We are the first and only collegiate league. The CSL is modeled after Korea's proleague and our end goal is to one day fill a stadium with fans watching our collegeiate e-athletes compete at the highest level, in the United States of course.

where is the twitter account >_>
also, so embarrassed at real names D:
I'll get to that soon enough O_O!~
Has it been decided whether Season 4 will be BW, SC2, or some combination of both?
Shit, if CSL 4 is going to be SC2, I want to tear it up for UMD :p Hopefully they let me play as an alumnus
Don't forget us in Canada.
EDIT - is there going to be a "all-stars" tournament again?
Stay tuned
How do I switch leadership of the team on the CSL website? Or do I just need to pm someone?
I'll have to switch leadership as well.
Shit, Mr. Riley and I were just wondering about this. Nice timing
I'm assuming that they'll do a wipe or reboot of the site like before... probably quite a few schools are going to go through a leadership transition.
will you guys need Blizzard's approval and whatnot to run it?

We should have a DC nerd dinner team lol, since all of us go to different schools. I think that wouldn't be TOO much to ask for since none of the schools in MD/DC/NoVA have enough people for one team.
I'll prob reorganize a University of Central Florida team for sc2 if I can get someone to help manage it (since I may not always be able to make games due to the slew of sc2 tournaments that are always happening) and there is in fact a sc2 league for CSL.
Nice! I'm heading into college next year so I definitely want in on this

Is it for certain the that CSL will be going Starcraft II for the next season? We're trying to set up a George Washington University team for next season, but we're more interested in SC2 than BW.
Wtf, I thought I was the only person at GWU on TeamLiquid lol
I'm in, to the 1 post person above ^
Thank goodness I'll be going to a bigger university for grad school next year so I'll have a real team to play on! I'll do my best to make them proud.
Also curious whether it will be BW or SC2 next season, or perhaps a bit of both?
Do BW =D. Or at least do something interesting for a format, like 1v1 SC2 1v1 BW 2v2 SC2 1v1 BW 1v1 SC2
Would love to see SC2 for season 4 (Also so I could rally a team for my school).
it makes no sense to do BW
Why not? I think BW is still the more enjoyable game, whether you're playing or watching. =/
I'm sure they would love to do both, but I doubt that they have the staff to do it. My bets on SC2 but confirmation from Xeris or Hazelynut would be nice for team planning.
Again... stay tuned , soon we'll be announcing stuff.
as awesome as BW is... the reality is that the majority of people don't care about it anymore now that SC2 will be out. It's going to be hard for schools to get a consistent lineup going for BW when everyone's playing SC2
woooo maybe I'll actually do something for CSL this year haha
aside from swinging the banhammer at some adbots, lol

Technically, Blizzard can only sign agreements with legal entities, but I think TL does it anyway x_x at some point the eSports guy was like, "wait, TL isn't a company?" Last season we technically required confirmation, but they don't seem to care much.

Problem with that is that it's terribly annoying for organization. Imagine hopping on and off those games and trying to coordinate. T_T

we'll have to do a compromise.
all games will be in SC2 but you can only use units from SC1 and you cant use automine or mbs, and only select 12 units at a time.

Haha, that's opposite of what we're having. A good chunk of players want it to stay BW. Granted, we'll probably get a swarm of players if it's SC2, and I kinda don't want to deal with that as a coordinator >>

Here we go. Took the liberty of making a poll Whether you're a student who's playing, or just someone who enjoys following the CSL scene, give your opinion!
blahhh im DONE with BW hahah. suck too much at that game ><
I'm not the biggest fan of a combo of alternating games for one match, just because it'd be difficult to set up who does what and stuff and going back n forth. I think with the popularity of SC2 coming in, so many people will play it exclusively it'll be near impossible to find anyone who wants to even go back to BW, and to the BW enthusiasts, maybe a smaller league can be formed too where people can play those also, I don't know how to set it up, it is a difficult situation, but I know I'm in it for SC2
Thanks Hazelynut and Xeris for the info, I can't wait for the announcements!
I will say that we will definitely not be running dual leagues (SC and SC2) and we won't combine both games in the same league :p
When you consider that during SC2 beta, people weren't playing BW and had no practice for CSL, I think SC2 is definitely gonna be the more popular choice. Since beta, I don't think there's been a single week of CSL where I didn't hear someone from the other team talk about how rusty they are at BW from playing SC2. I'd think you'd also have a much bigger pool of players, so those borderline teams can more easily field a consistent team, and the teams that just didn't have enough players (hi Algonquin) have a higher chance of grabbing an extra player or 2 for SC2 that would otherwise not play BW.
The way I see it, lots of people that aren't going to play BW will play SC2, and the majority of people that would have played BW will make the switch to SC2
I'm not in CSL this coming season so what I think probably has less weight than current participants, but the way the entire foreign scene is shifting so heavily toward SC2, I don't see BW being played nearly as much
On June 26 2010 01:40 Xeris wrote: I will say that we will definitely not be running dual leagues (SC and SC2) and we won't combine both games in the same league :p
This clearly means SC2 then because it won't be much of a league if it's BW only :p

Pardon me, but how does that make sense? Admittedly I have no experience with the iccup interface, but how is switching between games make it easier to communicate than just staying in SC2?
Because communicating in SC2 is ... horrendous? I dunno about your team, but I never knew the name of any of my opponents in CSL. I did, however, know which channel to hop into.
So you do all the communication in BW (channels), then go play SC2.
Or you use IRC or instant messaging and it makes no difference.
I voted for BW but honestly, if schools were dropping games because players were in <3 with the beta, I can only imagine what would happen if CSL tried to do another season of BW...
Unless a miracle happens and SC2 launch is pushed back!
I dont even like sc2, but csl should switch to attract more people and maybe sponsors.
i dont even know if i want to coordinate again if it's SC2 (which it will be ).
well ok I still will, but I'll have way less enthusiasm now that it has switched to a worse game.

Hot nurses + amazing SC awaits
On a more serious note, I think we got lucky..... We didn't succumb to problems with the beta, and I was able to consistently get our better players in the lineups as needed, including our best line possible against Duke, which happened to be the only time we were able to field that lineup..... I doubt it would be possible to run the next CSL in anything but SC2.....
I just thought of something to prevent problems with teams submitting lineups. It may be crazy, but hear me out.....
(modified) WINNERS LEAGUE FORMAT!!!!!
Only submission is the first player for either team. That way, no teams have an excuse for not submitting a proper lineup, or requiring a substitute. It'll be a lot simpler to run.
This may be bat-shit crazy, but I've been up for almost 30 hours now, and I'm not thinking straight anyways..... But yea.....

The current format leaves it up to the team with the best ace, plus at least 1 other player who can grab a win..... It's not that different..... Plus, if you know they have a really, really strong player, you can plan some sniping builds by weaker players to give yourself the best chance possible..... You only need it to work once, and you've got like 4 tries or so.....
it's also not fun if only one or two people on a team get to play...
On June 28 2010 04:50 blabber wrote: it's also not fun if only one or two people on a team get to play...
yea exactly. everyone on my team would be so much less interested in it if it was winner's league format. it's really fun to have 1 matchup to work on all week and then show your results.
plus the skill gap between players in CSL is sooooo much bigger than in korean proleague most of the time. the skill difference ranges from D- to A- and pretty much just being 1 letter grade above another player means you will never ever ever ever lose to them.
we will definitely not use winners league format because the skill differential in some teams makes it not fun for competitive play. the schools that have a top level player will have a ridiculously unfair advantage over casual players.
think if you're just a school trying to play for fun, and your entire team keeps getting all killed by one player, it's not going to be fun for those teams.

ventrilo or mumble was the only way I could communicate during the beta. SC2 chat interface not worth the effort
oh man i forgot how lame the party system is in SC2. only hte host can invite people to the party right? fuuuuuck. not it
hopefully Blizz decides to fix it before the season starts ^_^!
plz do sc2 next season, we have 0.5 sc1 players left... I'm sure other teams are in similar situations.
I actually wouldn't mind seeing 2v2 return, seeing as how there's no Korean standard to follow anymore
Yea. Bad idea..... Sleep deprivation will do that to you though.....
If CSL switches to SC2, I'd be excited to get in touch with the UCI team and play.
BW is really dwindling, and you can expect to see a huge surge in playership for SC2 and thus CSL.

Yeah, for all of you who are waiting for the confirmation, we're staying with BroodWar for another season at least.
Reason is 1) July 27 gives people ~2 months, no more to play the game. And that's assuming we all rush to the local Gamestop/BestBuy/etc. on the release date (assuming the release date isn't moved). 2) as of now, we don't think Battle.net 2.0 will be up to snuff for what we want/need for competitive play. 3) even some of those who prefer SC2 have to admit, there will never be a game quite like BroodWar. 4) More people have expressed interest in staying bw rather than switching to SC2. By this I mean emails, old coordinators, etc.
While we're not going to stay "BW FOREVER!!", we will have to give ourselves time to judge Battle.net 2.0 after it comes out first. In the Spring we'll reassess the situation and hopefully be able to make the switch.
Don't be mad ^^.
Reading that conversation it would seem that the 'obvious' answer was switching to SC2
But if you're staying BW then that I think will be quite a serious blow to you guys for garnering any sponsorship or anything that might have been pursued. I don't know where you guys gathered your data from but I would think over 50% of people would want to switch over to SC2 and I can almost guarantee that moving on to SC2 will increase the amount of interest at least 2-3x. Seeing as how much membership on TL has increased since February 19th.
It is definitely the CSL's decision to make and not just the players, but I think it would be a huge mistake to stay on BW. You are literlaly losing hundreds of players this way.

Damnit, I was actually hoping you guys would be sticking with BW T.T
I'd run one if I wasn't in danger of dropping out of school ^^.
SC2 will be abitch to coordinate.....
i propose that all CSL admins be in charge of adding every player to their friend's list and hosting the games. otherwise no one is going to want to play.
SC2 may not be optimal for this setup, especially with low staff time, but it's certainly possible. The implementation of chat channels that Blizzard is implementing after release will definitely make it easier. I have faith in the CSL staff!
When have I led you guys astray?! HMMM! :p
You guys complain too much, its not that hard to do. You add the two people to your list, which can be submitted to the admins during signups. Then those 2 guys can add guildies to watch if it is needed. Yeah we don't have chatrooms but setting up 3-5 1v1's is REALLY not hard.
Well, a lot of people have ventrilo servers to meet on and have discussions on this and get the kinks out, add friends for matches etc. Skype or teamspeak etc. I don't see a problem with SC2 without chat channels even. I love chat channels, but they aren't a necessity necessarily.

Skype could work to an extent... most division admins would have multiple matches simultaneously though if we have anything like last season.
@the winner's league suggestion - it's just not appropriate for our skill level. The current SPL format (lineups revealed after each set) is more likely, if we're going to change format at all.
I would imagine match fixing isn't a problem in CSL

If there's a limit, it's pretty high. I can't find any concrete information about it on the internet. I thought maybe it might be comparable to the WoW friends list limit, but I can't find any info on that either.

not sure what an fl is, but if your'e asking how many you can spectate in a room, I think you can have like 2 players and at least 10 more spectators on top of that, if not its a lot more. But you can easily fit the two players, 3-4 teammates per team, and even two CSL referees if need be.
edit: oh duh...friends list. Theres no limit as far as I know of, but its not like you need to have EVERY csl participant on the admins list, just the ones during the week, I add and remove people regularly, but I know that in beta there were a few guys who had 50+ friends on at a time (djwheat)

Are you guys concerned about people cheating using livestreams? People can use 2 computers and watch the livestream on another computer, or they could have a teammate tip then off during the match using iccup chat. It's completely undetectable too.

Not really, I don't think it has really been an issue, nobody has really been suspected even.. we'll see though.
teammates observe each of the matches anyway, so they could cheat there too.

Teams concerned about cheating can always request for no observers in the game + cast replays only. It's happened a few times, and typically, the only 'forced' livestreamed matches are the playoffs.

If you really wanted to cheat in the CSL, it's honestly not that hard.
