But usually that's cause of poor technique and/or not going low enough squatting. Short femurs/huge legs, that sounds exactly like me in the mirror I would say. And my arms are not really long either. Didn't know that would qualify my as a genetic anomaly -.- Besides that, I feel like I have a lot of work to do with my DL-technic, I feel like my squats are more solid overall. @Decaf: Yes, I use a switched grip. I don't believe my back is weak, weak harmstrings could be true though. Which exercises would you suggest for harmstrings besides machine curls (always have problems with these). I would guess back extensions and good mornings?
Good mornings, russian dead lifts, glute ham raises, and leg curls and ball leg curls as accessory lifts

just had my workout. i was finally able to do a full pistol on my bum knee when i was previously going just above parallel. i noticed that despite being able to do pistols, my quad (the outer part to be exact) quivers/twitches quite a lot during the exercise. i'm assuming the quivering/twitching has something to do with muscle weakness?? but if so, why is it that i can do a full pistol?? is it possible for other leg muscles to compensate??

So in the near future I will be stuck in the desert with basically nothing to do but do sports and live healthily. I was wondering if you guys can give me tips on how to make the best of it.
I'll be there in intervals of 3 weeks, with one week in between during which I won't be able to do much. I will work 9-5 more or less, after (and before) which there is literally nothing to do for me. I have access to a gym and I can go running and swimming.
I am mainly looking to gain mass and lose the little body fat I have. Losing weight hasn't been a problem for me so far, however I used to be unable to gain much muscle mass after like 4 weeks of initial (and successful) exercising. So any tips in that direction would be greatly appreciated. I confident I can get there again easily but anything that helps me break that limit would be great.
Unfortunately I don't know yet how far I will be able to influence my diet since I will probably go out to eat 7 days a week. I generally eat healthily though and don't plan on changing that.
So if there is a fitness routine aimed at gaining mass you can suggest for let's say 4 x 3 weeks please share - anything is appreciated.

Yeah its probably weakness. And pistols work more than just your quads. And just because your muscle shakes doesnt mean you cant do the exercise, it just means its near the most weight you can do.

I just challenged my gf to a biggest loser contest, which she surprisingly accepted (after obligatory are you calling me fat etc nonsense). I was already set on getting back in shape, so I figure I should make her do it too =D

It would probably be best to do Starting Strength (see original post) and cram your mouth full of food.

edit: i take it back. huge difference with and without the counterweight lol

It's actually a bit easier with some counterweight if you have no problem with the balance.

is swimming (breastroke) or jogging better for weight loss?

Depends on intensity/length of workout.

I know when it comes to most of the standard strokes, where your legs are just kicking, you're predominantly using your hip flexors rather than your massive leg muscles. Specially if you're swimming with a correct technique, jogging beats it everything as you are using all the muscles in your legs. Your arms are a small muscle group when it comes to swimming, they just don't use as much energy and oxygen to function.
I'm really not sure about breaststroke, I'd say it would be similar.
For my money, unless you're doing freestyle or butterfly with terrible terrible form, jogging every time.
I'd mix it up though, they are both awesome cardio and swimming has no impact on your joints while jogging is epic fail on the lower back and knees.

I haven't been posting much in the 2010 fitness initiative thread much because I'm still in my holiday slacking mode.
I agree with Energies. Mix it up. If you do a proper fly kick set you'll get a really good quad/hamstring workout though.
I have a swim meet on Saturday at Taipei where I'm hoping to break 28.60 for the 50m fly. I'm a little worried that I won't do well because I'm out of shape after not working out during christmas break. Should I workout hard for a week and try to get myself in shape (and risk having too little glycosin stores or whatever on saturday) or should I taper?

I think I'm going to start swimming again.
Should I mix it with some gym? How should I?
If I train everyday swimming, can I go to the gym everyday too?, or should I split these things, 1 day swimming and 1 day gym and so on?
Should I weight train? halp plz ?

You can definitely do both on the same day. And yes weight training is good for you
