Ok, not really expecting much but here it goes.
I updated my old laptop (LG P420) to windows 10 just because it suggested I do so. It ran win7 previously. After the update was finished it just kept booting. The windows logo appeared, then a black screen and what looked like a flicker of a window, then it started all over again.
There is a message "for LG smart recovery, press F11" when you start the laptop. Pressing F11, however, resulted in a beeper sound, nothing more. All I could do was go into BIOS but that didn't help.
Since it seemed like a dead end and I wasn't able to do anything besides booting over and over I decided to install win8, which I had on DVD. I had to do a stand alone instal (without your existing settings) since I couldn't get into windows.
So that worked and I got into windows but there is no sound. It says no device has been installed for that. So I went to google for drivers but none of them work. There is a red X on top of my sound volume control icon.
The laptop in question: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-LG-P420-N-AE21G-Notebook.60803.0.html
Apparently it has: Intel Cougar Point PCH - High Definition Audio Controller
Installing this http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds024884 just turns the screen black and nothing happens.
So if anyone has any idea how to either
1) get the sound working on win8.1 or alternatively 2) revert everything I did (I know it's possible to revert windows updates etc. but that is done in windows, and so it didn't work for me here), that would be great.
TL;DR: UPGRADING TO WINDOWS 10 JUST MIGHT FUCK YOU. Also it's pretty meh, I have it on my desktop.

On the LG support webpage for your laptop, there's only Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 drivers. They share a Realtek audio driver, so it seems it's a Realtek audio chip.
I'd try to search for some sort of newer versions of Realtek audio drivers. If you are lucky, they might be using a universal driver package for all their chips just like NVIDIA does it for their GPUs.
If Realtek creates separate driver packages for their individual chips, I'd try to see if you can find something out about your particular chip by looking at LG's documentation for your laptop, or by downloading and looking inside the .zip file they share for the Windows 7 audio driver package on their support site.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I seem to recall there being a realtek icon. I might do some digging but I think I'll just back up my important files and format the entire thing, then install win7 from a flash drive or something. It's a hassle either way. The laptop had some slowing down issues lately so hopefully that will fix those. But if by some divine miracle someone knows of a working driver I'll take it.

You can download a generic driver for your laptop from http://www.realtek.com/downloads/ - just choose High Definition Audio Codecs (Software) and choose the 32/64 bit driver package depending on whether your windows is 32/64 bit.

Ok thanks I think I will give this a shot.

I finally had the time to try this. Didn't work. Reinstalled windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Installed the drivers. Still no sound. I'm seriously pissed about this. The update that Microsoft aggressively pushed destroyed my laptop but I guess there is no one else to blame. Fuck I hate computers sometimes.
