it sort of spins slowly, slows down and then picks up and then goes back and forth like that. It doesn't spin when the CPU's hot? That's exactly how fans react when they're just getting pwm signals or whatever to run at lower rpm, few fans just run on flat 12v controls for 100% all the time

I've 2 case fans, one mounted at the back and one on top. The top one doesn't spin properly. At boot, after a while and when shutting down. Doesn't matter when, it just simply doesn't spin. Right now it's BARELY spinning but I don't think it's some technical issue. It's more likely that something is stuck somewhere between the blades or something but I can't see it visually.

It could just need some light oiling (in the fan hub construction under the sticker and plug). Or if the bearing is actually bad, then there's not much to do. If the blades aren't stuck on something and it's not the connector being loose or something dumb like that, it's more likely one of these things. A top fan not working isn't going to be the difference between a system overheating and not except in rare cases anyway, so you could just leave it alone. Or pay for a replacement.

I think you're right. Been running my pc 24/7 for years and last couple of weeks the fan has not been working properly but I've not noticed any overheating considering I have one more case fan in the back.

Just buy some ball-bearing - silent fans, like Akasa ones. When a fan is dying, let it pass ![]()
