There's absolutely no point for 32 GB for gaming. 16GB is only needed for the most intensive games. Your CPU and GPU is more likely to be your limiter than 8GB ram.

My GPU is about to be dead, I am going to replace it with a 1070. There are rumors that the 1070Ti is about to be released in a few days, do you think I can expect a price drop for the 1070 or is it unlikely since the Ti propably serve a different segment?

I am going to presume that if he is a professional graphic designer or something, he should know exactly how much ram he actually needs. It'll be like a pencil artist asking what pencil to buy. If he want's to use common office programs, open pdfs, that sort of thing, then 8gb is enough.

System specs for Photoshop, Illustrator are pretty vague. Should aim for 16gbs at the very least, preferably 32gbs, plus an ssd.

You are overestimating graphic designers I doubt a lot of them know much about hardware.

My plan is to actually build the exact same system for my SO, who is a professional (2d) graphic designer and deals with relatively large Photoshop/Illustrator files (100-250mb). My own requirements are a sufficient build for data processing, working with relatively large databases & spreadsheets, and data visualisation.

Overall the requirements are nothing too excessive. Gaming wise it's mainly the Blizzard portfolio. If it runs on max. settings on 1080p/60hz I'm happy. Trying to pick good hardware which will keep me up and running for a bit while not overspending.

Due to reasons I actually have to get a WiFi card too. I'm looking at the Asus - PCE-AC68, but I'm wondering if the Asus - PCE-AC56 is enough. In theory the AC56 should be fast enough, but I'm a little bit worried about the actually quality of the WiFi signal. There aren't a lot of options out there & I'd rather get a PCIe card than a USB stick. Any recommendations?
It has a strong technique, but it lacks oo.

I don't actually know how much RAM you need to work with large photoshop files, but I'd estimate you want to be on the larger side. If you can afford it, get at least 16GB. It's trivially easy to run out of RAM with only 8GB.

That said, if you're unsure you can just start with 2x8GB and add another set later if you need it.

For software development I find 8GB to be much too low (a daily problem on my work laptop) and 16GB to be generally a good spot. I eventually added another 16GB because I started running out of it due to other reasons.

My limited experience with WIFI adapters has actually held USBs being superior to PCI-e ones. It might just be the ones I've used or the fact that you can better position a USB antenna, so YMMV.

Yup. Question is/was whether I should hit 32GB right away instead of 16GB. I'll settle with 16GB for starters

I actually thought PCI-e cards are superior to USB sticks. I'll see if I can dig up some more info on it.

My GF does professional Photoshop stuff. My Experience from the last few years: 8gb was "barely okay", 16gb worked alright. Now with 32gb its great for the most part, but even now ps likes to use all the memory it is allowed to use (i think 70% by default, can be raised manually in the settings), this can be noticeable when she streams. If you have the money, 32gb is a good idea for ps.

Windows 8 has a tiny marketshare. Numbers vary by source, but they all have W8 as miniscule compared to 7 and 10.

All OS:

Windows 7: 47.21%
Windows 81: 7.13%
Windows 10: 29.09%

Windows 7: 49.04%
Windows 8: 6.4%
Windows 10: 26.8%

https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-7-loses-market-share-in-latest-reports

---

Windows only:

Windows 7: 43.99%
Windows 8: 2.64%
Windows 10: 39.3%

If you don't count the shitty windowses, you don't get to 8 either.

3.1
95
98
(2000)
XP
(Vista)
7
(8)
(8.1)
10

Shitty ones in brackets. So if you count the shitty ones, 10 is 10. If you don't count them, 10 is 6. Only not counting 8 and 8.1 specifically seems arbitrary to me.

Edit: I am stupid. Obviously Windows 1 and 2 also exist. I have no idea how microsoft numbers work. No idea how they get to 10 or 7 or 8 or anything, none of them make sense. But if you don't count the shitty ones (Or the weird ones like NT and server stuff), Windows 10 is indeed Windows 8. I have no idea if windows 1 or 2 were shitty, i am just assuming they were not because more were made afterwards.

Must suck for those who went to 8 expecting it to last longer than 7 though

Did we ever get anyone in here who purchased and used the AMD Rizen chips yet? I haven't had a chance to do any review searching, but if someone here has given them a chance, what are your thoughts?

Windows 95 wasn't well received either, IIRC. So it's pretty much every other version that sucked.

They did give everyone free upgrades to 10. I'd like to upgrade but I just don't want to deal with several of 10's issues.

Internal, unreleased builds and some of those big named OSes being considered minor versions (e.g. 5.1 -> 5.2, not 5.1 -> 6.0).

Sure, but they did that for 7 too and 7 is going strong

the userbase for 8 and 10 is very similar i guess while 7 is its own, different product

I just built a computer and bought the Ryzen 5 1600. I'm admittedly not very tech savvy but I absolutely love the thing. I ran a computer benchmark test recently and it had this to say about the processor:

"With a good single core score, this CPU can easily handle the majority of general computing tasks. Additionally this processor can handle moderate workstation, and even light server workloads. Finally, with a gaming score of 74.2%, this CPUs suitability for 3D gaming is very good."

I have it paired with a gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb (looking to upgrade this part later) and it can run through most games like butter. I just bought The Witcher 3, so we'll see how it runs, but sc2 runs consistently above 144fps. Overall I am very satisfied with the processor. Just a tip, but if you use the fan that comes with the chip I would remove all of the factory thermal paste and apply your own. I didn't and the thermal paste oozed out all four sides. It would probably have been fine, but it bugged me so I removed it and applied my own. Even if you don't do this the factory thermal paste works just fine I heard. The fan that comes with it works really well too.

Looking to budget upgrade my PC so that process-heavy tasks like (casual) video editing/movie making work better, don't crash etc.

i wrote some ideas below and any advice or comments are appreciated thank you

current system:

intel duo dual core ~3.2ghz
4gb ddr2
unknown mobo
250 ssd
radeon r9 200

problem:

+ i like to do basic video editing using camtasia but after a while the playback/preview framerate drops to unwatchable so i can't really continue. also, later on during editing, the program starts to crash every 5 mins). (i do not care about render wait times, just using process-heavy software with it lagging!)

+ i like to open multiple (20-100) tabs in chrome but sometimes it takes forever to do this (i'm capable of doing it, you just have to wait)

solution:

+ try other video editing software , maybe it runs better
+ thinking of upgrading my mobo, cpu and ram

budget:

+ low as possible whilst it still being worthwhile
+ i do not care too much about future-proofing because the only game i really wanna play is star citizen when it comes out in say 2 years. i already play witcher 3 and crysis 3 at variable framerates and don't really care
+ looking at 250-300GBR tops i guess

been having a browse and trying to get an idea of what's going on.
came across 'combo' bundles and found this guy's shop http://stores.ebay.co.uk/cpucombos/?_dmd=1&_nkw=i7 16gb which is sorta interesting , but the ram is 1600mhz ? is that something to be avoided?

any advice on what pathway i should take? usually i just buy straight from overclockers but i'm wondering about refurbished/2nd hand parts now

i think the cheapest i7 on overclockers is 220gbr https://www.overclockers.co.uk/intel-core-i7-7740x-4.3ghz-kabylake-x-basin-falls-socket-lga2066-processor-oem-cp-63e-in.html
but i would need ram and the cheapest compatible mobo .

what i need to do next:

+ find out cheapest compatible mobo for that overclocker's i7 and disadvantages of this

+ explore other cpu options (since this overclocker's one is 7th generation and i can probably find cheaper versions..) (is ebay the place to look for 2nd hand parts? or should i stick with the 'reliability' of overclockers.co.uk ? )

+ find out cheapest option for ram and what ram to get that will be useful to me (1600x16gb? 2300? 3000x8gb? no real difference?)

im in the UK

any advice or comments whatsoever are appreciated ! !

edit: i know people will probably say 'just buy anything itll be better than what you have now' lol , so if you think going with an i3 or i5 would be more reasonable then please tell me. just, i read a little and it seemed like i3 is only duo core and i5 doesn't use hyperthreading, so a low range i7 "sounds" attractive to me....

stuck this on reddit too
