i installed another 4gb ram, seems to be working so far
i also clocked from 3.0 to 3.6
today, after installing my new ram, i am now wondering why my CPU is saying that it's performing low
someone said to try turning windows power mode to high performance
after i rebooted, it showed my cpu at around 2.9ghz i think. however, after 10 minutes after opening my stuff (twitch in High quality, Dota, youtube in chrome),

following this, after closing dota, my cpu (task manager) is back up to 2.8gz, and says 3.6ghz in cpuz
i mean, i GUESS it's just autistic and giving me 'CPU available' figures instead of 'CPU in use' figures.........

+ Show Spoiler +I've heard of this thing in Windows 10 called CPU parking where the OS will "park" CPU cores by disabling them and/or and reduce the frequency of the cores that aren't "parked" to conserve power when they aren't needed even when you specify this to not happen with the min/max processor state in power settings. Some people say it's bullshit, and some people say it's a thing. When I first used windows 10 I noticed my 6 core 12 thread Xeon was running at under 2 GHz, when it's clock speed was supposed to be 3.33 GHz, so I used this program called UnparkCPU. After that I saw a consistent core clock speed of 2.93 GHz about 99% of the time on all 12 CPU threads, and some cores were boosting to 3.33 GHz under load. At the bottom of the article is the download, it's a zip file. Open the UnparkCPU.exe inside, click "show status" and it will take a couple minutes as it's scanning your registry. Then it will show your cores' status of either "parked" or "unparked" based on it's registry key's value. Then click "unpark all cores" and it will take a couple minutes again as it's modifying the registry. Then reboot. This might help, but it might not, worth a try though. Worked for me with my system running Windows 10.

Hey guys! I wanted to upgrade my computer I built off the old thread from 2011. Here is my info.

-my case is very large
Native Monitor resolution: 1920x1080 (1080p) - thinking of upgrading my monitor to 4k or 5k to be able to plug both my desktop and my USB-C macbook into.
Why I want to upgrade / what do I want to achieve:
-I want to upgrade because my computer is barely running League of Legends right now. I would like to upgrade the parts so I can run League of Legends on the highest settings along with play games like PUBG.
Budget: $500-700
Country: USA
Brand/Retailer: Newegg or anything online. I live in a small town.
I would like to have it somewhat future proof, so if that takes more than $700 I'll be fine with that. Thanks guys!

AFAIK it should run LoL fine but maybe the 6870 is worse than i'm thinking
The easiest and most obvious thing would be a GPU upgrade. Maxing even most demanding games for 1080p60hz can be done with a midrange GPU but rendering games at 4-5k is much (~4-7x) harder. A midrange GPU today is many times faster than a 6870~
could also do a CPU+Mobo+RAM upgrade at the same time or later on, those three need to be swapped at the same time and the other hardware is mostly fine to be used for a while yet

Right now, if my graphics are too high on LoL I get a display error (most likely due to over heating). I would also want to be able to run PUBG on medium-high settings with great FPS. Right now I cannot run it at all.
I am willing to do a GPU, CPU, Mobo, RAM upgrade if that is what is required, just don't know what to buy.
Should I start with a GPU upgrade and see if that is enough to run PUBG? Thanks again.

Regarding the GPU, there is no real disadvantage from buying a new GPU first to see if that is enough for you, and upgrading the rest afterwards in case it doesn't. Unless you do something very weird and specific, you can just use the new GPU in your new build, so you don't really waste any money in compared to buying completely new stuff, just the effort of exchanging the GPU once, which should be half an hour tops. You might wanna check if your PSU supports all of the stuff in the PC if you grab a demanding GPU.

@FFGenerations: I wouldn't be concerned about the frequency displayed by the task manager. It shows sometimes well over 5 GHz when I'm actually running at 4.1 GHz. In my experience, CPU-Z has always been more reliable.

ya dude even my 2007 machine runs like a fucking boss (i play witcher3 and crysis 3 on low framerates), it must be because your graphics card has 1GB of memory (mine has 3GB) (dont listen to my advice)

Yea I run an app that measures my temps while I play. My GPU gets into the 90s if I don't manually turn my GPU fan to 90-95% while I'm playing. If I don't manually turn my GPU fans up, LoL will crash with a display driver error.
I was wondering if someone could link me a GPU that would work with my current PSU or an example of one. If there aren't any, what PSU would I have to get? Thanks.

Yeah, 90 is definitively too much on your GPU (I assume Celsius? Just noticed that you are from the US). But that is a problem that can easily be solved with a fan or less overclocking/downclocking.
Regarding the GPU, take one of the online sites that calculate the wattage need of your system ( like this one ), and experiment with a few GPUs that interest you. They might not be totally accurate though, usually they overestimate how much power you need.
It might not be a big problem, i am just a bit sensitive with regards to PSU issues after figuring out that a major problem that occasionally lead to my rig just mysteriously resetting, which i was trying to figure out for over a year, was the fact that my old PSU manufacturer was lying through their teeth and sold something that couldn't even deliver 400W consistently as a 750W PSU. Yours seems to be good, so there shouldn't be that problem. Still need to do the calculations.

dota was stuttering today and i realised my cpu was 95 degrees, just ordered a new cpu fan thing and paste. also downclocked and redcued voltage
my new RAM lets me watch 1080p videos on youtube/twitch now smoothly, so nice :3

Yes 90 degrees Celsius (us Americans use the ridiculous system). I have never overclocked anything and don't want to. Just want to get my computer to be something that just works where I don't have to monitor temps and manually turn fans up for it not to crash. I'll look at some GPUs when I'm off work.
Question: Is this thread still a place where people build computers for you? I don't mind doing the research, but would like to have a base model or something similar so I know what I'm looking for in terms of specs and price.

yup, good ole 6800-6900 cards still doing what they do best. haha. i miss my 5850 and 6950 sometimes. that's neither here nor there though.
if you want to do a cheap upgrade and get some pretty good performance, upgrade to a 2600 (or 2600k if you dont mind picking up a p67/z68 mobo) and a 1060. that'll get you a good boost. Honestly, you could skip out on upgrading everything else right now and just get a 1060. that'll give you a pretty good boost right there. Upgrade the rest to newer hardware overtime. If you feeling ballsy, go a little overboard and get a 1070 or a 1070ti. Do the rest later. League doesn't take much to run on max settings at pretty good fps (well above 60), and from experiences with the i5 2320 and 2400, they do pretty well. Not gonna get you to 144fps consistently (if you were looking to go to that), but it will def be well above 60 at max with no issues whatsoever

Hey guys, when is the best time to start buying parts for a build this month generally speaking? Pick up what looks good soon or wait for more deals? Looking to spend about $1000-$1100 USD, just to give an idea.

I use PC part picker to look at prices. Generally, Black Friday/Cyber Monday do offer the best details on most computer components.
