Did we ever get anyone in here who purchased and used the AMD Rizen chips yet? I haven't had a chance to do any review searching, but if someone here has given them a chance, what are your thoughts?

I just built a computer and bought the Ryzen 5 1600. I'm admittedly not very tech savvy but I absolutely love the thing. I ran a computer benchmark test recently and it had this to say about the processor:

"With a good single core score, this CPU can easily handle the majority of general computing tasks. Additionally this processor can handle moderate workstation, and even light server workloads. Finally, with a gaming score of 74.2%, this CPUs suitability for 3D gaming is very good."

I have it paired with a gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb (looking to upgrade this part later) and it can run through most games like butter. I just bought The Witcher 3, so we'll see how it runs, but sc2 runs consistently above 144fps. Overall I am very satisfied with the processor. Just a tip, but if you use the fan that comes with the chip I would remove all of the factory thermal paste and apply your own. I didn't and the thermal paste oozed out all four sides. It would probably have been fine, but it bugged me so I removed it and applied my own. Even if you don't do this the factory thermal paste works just fine I heard. The fan that comes with it works really well too.

Thanks! I kind of forgot about it after graduating and being poverty stricken. Now that I have a job, I need a proper workstation. My laptop works for what I need it to do, but it limits me from really getting creative with some ideas. I'll take a look at that one and see what the prices are and what the specs are for a multimedia workstation. Glad someone has it and is enjoying it.

been having a browse and trying to get an idea of what's going on.
came across 'combo' bundles and found this guy's shop http://stores.ebay.co.uk/cpucombos/?_dmd=1&_nkw=i7 16gb which is sorta interesting , but the ram is 1600mhz ? is that something to be avoided?

any advice on what pathway i should take? usually i just buy straight from overclockers but i'm wondering about refurbished/2nd hand parts now

i think the cheapest i7 on overclockers is 220gbr https://www.overclockers.co.uk/intel-core-i7-7740x-4.3ghz-kabylake-x-basin-falls-socket-lga2066-processor-oem-cp-63e-in.html

what i need to do next:

+ find out cheapest compatible mobo for that overclocker's i7 and disadvantages of this

+ explore other cpu options (since this overclocker's one is 7th generation and i can probably find cheaper versions..) (is ebay the place to look for 2nd hand parts? or should i stick with the 'reliability' of overclockers.co.uk ? )

+ find out cheapest option for ram and what ram to get that will be useful to me (1600x16gb? 2300? 3000x8gb? no real difference?)

any advice or comments whatsoever are appreciated ! !

edit: i know people will probably say 'just buy anything itll be better than what you have now' lol , so if you think going with an i3 or i5 would be more reasonable then please tell me. just, i read a little and it seemed like i3 is only duo core and i5 doesn't use hyperthreading, so a low range i7 "sounds" attractive to me....

stuck this on reddit too

The 4gbs of RAM is probably the bottleneck there - at least go for 8, maybe even 16 if you're doing video editing (as it sounds like that's where the issue lies). If you've got a spare slot and a few quid you could just buy another 4gb stick and see how it goes?

Upgrading to an i7 is certainly not a 'budget upgrade.' You will need to update the BIOS on your motherboard to take Kabylake - if not get a new one entirely. If you replace your motherboard you might run into issues with your Windows license as in general it's considered a 'new computer' if you replace the mobo (so that could add a hundred quid to your build). But a nice phone call to Microsoft might make it ok.

A current generation i5 with an appropriate motherboard might be better, with Black Friday coming up so you should probably do some research on i5 mobos and wait to see what Amazon will give you at the end of the month?

i looked at ram not long ago but it seemed really pricey to get old ddr2 that matches my existing. however, i think you are right and i should look at that again. maybe it was pricey because i was trying to match my existing ram exactly , with another 4gb, rather than look at a completely new bundle of ram.. or maybe i was just looking in the wrong place (probably amazon.co.uk).

i'll get back to you in a few days maybe to catch up. btw here is the reddit thread with some interesting suggestions https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/790kco/looking_to_slightly_upgrade_my_intel_duo_ddr2_ram/

but sc2 runs consistently above 144fps

SC2's performance is strongly related to what is happening in the game, it's CPU limited to an extreme and early on with just workers mining it can handle 10x or more performance than with 60 workers on each side and maxed armies moving around + fighting since most of the CPU load comes from units doing things.

The delivery of frames is also extremely irregular, with every simulation tick of the game the next frame gets delayed significantly so 22 of the frames in every second of gameplay take far longer than the rest to be displayed. Because of that you can have over 100 "FPS" (frames in the last second) and yet 22 of those 100 frames still take longer than 1/60'th of a second to be displayed. The difference between the best CPU and not-quite-as-good CPU's is visible for sc2 even on a 60hz display and much more obvious on >60hz which display the game a lot better

It should feel good for you though, i've made several CPU upgrades with sc2 as a focus and it's weird to have those moments like when a swarm of mutalisks fly over some missile turrets and the game does not slow way down any more - a lot of times that i wouldn't particularly notice that the game was running poorly but after it runs better it's super obvious.

why is sc so intensive when something like dota runs like a beast and seemingly has a similar amount going on?

Probably because there's not enough money in SC2 for Blizzard.

I'm not aware of dota dealing with pathfinding etc for hundreds of units and they are very different engines under the hood.

SC2's style of engine is usually called lockstep, they have every client run the same deterministic simulation from a list of very basic instructions. It has some major advantages and disadvantages and is common in more complex RTS games

Dota 2 and LoL use client server architectures AFAIK which has everyone connect to a central server which does a lot of that work and tells everybody where the units and players are, what they are doing etc

So will RAM purveyors not try to cut each other anymore on prices? Considering all the sticks basically come from a few select manufacturers, seems DDR4 is not going down anytime soon. Gone are the days of scoring cheap sticks...?

It might in 2018. There's been a supply shortage and they are supposed to be ramping up production in 2018. Then again, there's nothing stopping them from ramping up production and selling it at the same prices, so we'll see...

Doesn't seem to be. It's basically just mini-displayport + data. The newer ones are using the USB-C interface. Per the spec the usefulness of Thunderbolt 1.3 seems to be primarily at driving multiple very high resolution monitors, which is pretty niche. I expect USB-C will become ubiquitous and cover most consumer needs.

Hi all, my friend has asked for advice to build a rig that can play LOL silky smooth with capability for a bit more. Vague I know. I have done some research and have put a build together but the last time I built a rig was years ago. Does this seem decent or overkill? I looked back through the thread and couldn't see anything but if there is a LOL build that was suggested recently and you have seen it let me know.

Radeon 7770 £85
Corsair CX430 £45
Corsair 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory x2 £56

Honestly, i'd say just buy something used of ebay if that is your price range. You will have to save on a lot of things if you want to build a complete PC inc. Windows for 400. Meanwhile, you can probably get something pretty good used for 300 on ebay, and still have 100 left in case something breaks really quickly.

Current gen i3s are Quad cores, and Current Gen i5s are Hex Cores. For your load, it'd go with either a current gen i5 8400, or a Ryzen 5 1600. Used parts, I'd say go for an i7 that you can find for the cheap. More than likely, you will be looking at a Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge setup. Def go with a cheap (not bare minimum) SSD and a large (1.5-2TB) 7200rpm mech drive for extra storage. 16gb of ram is ideal. The 7700k is effectively dead (literally on both ends) due to its socket not supporting the 8th gen CPU, and the fact that the 8th gen i3s and i5s are capable of performing nearly identically to it for much cheaper. If you are capable of getting a hold of one at around $250 then hell yea, buy that shit. If not, don't even waste your time looking in that direction. Also, never go for cheap overclocking boards. They're cheap for a reason. They either have shit components, or less features (though the latter is bad, it could be a feature that you were looking for).

If you're doing this for SC2 and just random day to day tasks, then I'd say just get an 8350k (8th gen i3) and overclock it as high as you can (reports of people getting 5.2GHz and higher).

DO NOT INVEST IN KABY LAKE X.

on the GPU side, assuming you're on 1080p 60hz display I'd say go for a GTX1060. If you feelin saucy, get a 1070ti.

Get a key from Kinguin for Windows 10 and install it from USB. Get a case that suits your tastes, and you should be good. You're going to need more than 2gb of ram though. Even running 32bit windows wont get you around that wall. 4gb minimum due to all of the background tasks. Also, that's the wrong ram. That's DDR3, but that board is DDR4.

reports from people doing testing on many cpu's that they don't oc as well as the coffee lake i5/i7's and 4.9, 5.0ghz is much more common; that's still pretty damn fast tho

RAM performance is also very important for a range of cpu limited games including sc2
