I have noticed i7-5820K is at least £50 more expensive than when I bought it, while i7-6700K is slightly cheaper. Is this based on lower stock or did they realise i7-5820K is better than they thought? I feel like I did well when I bought it. :D Or, is it because of Brexit? But even then, why is i7-6700K becoming cheaper?

Hello everyone!

You guys helped me build my own machine about 5 years ago which has been awesome and now I'm back to build a PC for my dad. His main concern is being able to play Civ 6 but otherwise does some 3D modeling and general gaming. He requested a large case which is why I chose a full tower. Any cost cutting methods would be appreciated as this build is already a bit above budget. Thanks in advance.

Decent price point compared to buying the pieces separately (add 10% discount to bring it to $1000 CAD even)
Comes with Windows 10 which saves me pirating windows 7 / paying for windows
970 vs 1060/1070. almost the same price point makes me want to just build it myself.
Apparently the power source is absolute trash.

It's not for me which is why the budget is tighter and desire to build myself is lower but I would appreciate feedback either way!

just use the pcpartpicker entry level guide as baseline (as has been suggested before). currently it's ~750CAD. your premade has a cpu one tier higher for +250CAD. a windows 7 key is roughly 20USD if you know where to look.

good points and I ended up just building a nicer one for 1200$ CAD. thanks again for all the tips!

There's not much to cut without losing important stuff, only minor optimizations

6700k was being sold quite far above recommended price @ launch for a long time, it no longer is (it's at £310 MSRP w/ a few sites discounting ~5%). They're still sidegrades to the point that the 6700k is my preferred CPU when i could own either (faster 4c8t vs slower 6c12t)

Built a gaming PC about 4 years ago from this website's help and its ran like a champ. Looking to build another one.

What is your budget?
$1,000

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1080p

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Pretty much WoW is all I play. I'd like it on max settings or close to it.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
May want to stream once I upgrade my internet to Fiber over the winter.

Do you intend to overclock?
Yes, if streaming.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
I have a Windows 7 key from my old computer but I figure I'll need to get a new one for a new build.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No other peripherals.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
Going to get a bigger SSD for OS and WoW. (256 or 512). Will want a 2TB+ storage drive.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Newegg is what I bought everything on last time. I wouldn't mind buying all from newegg again or if there are HUGE deals for something I can do whatever website.

If WoW is pretty much all you play at 1080p, then at this budget point it's pretty much standard i5-6600K with any Z170 motherboard, 16GB RAM and GTX1060 6GB, 256GB SSD will do fine. May want an i7 depending on how serious streamer you are. The windows 7 key can be reuse, but that means you cant use if on your old computer, so if your old computer is still working, then buy new windows key I guess.

Is R9 480 the best GPU that AMD has? I can see why NVIDIA overcharges. More cores and more base clock speed. Still, GTX 1080 is just too expensive.

I think the Fury X is still AMD's best GPU? Which I don't think was much better than the 7990 (circa 2013).

Core counts and clock speed alone mean NOOOOTHING when you're comparing different families/architectures, though.

Fury X is the fastest but it's pretty old tech by now and it's stuck @4GB of VRAM

neither cores nor clock speed are good metrics for judging GPU's across architecture but rx480 vs 1080 and titan are in a completely different league, they'd need to more than double performance to have a shot at the flagships.

Heya, just pointing out that the OP seems a bit outdated. Here's a case in point:

The current generation consists of the Radeon HD7000 series and GTX 700 series for the high-end segment and the Radeon HD6000 series and GTX 600 series for the low-end and mid-range segment.

A Radeon HD7770, Radeon HD7790, Radeon R7 260X, Radeon HD7850, GTX 650 Ti, or GTX 650 Ti Boost is suggested for reasonably high settings at 1920x1080 in Starcraft II, Diablo III, World of Warcraft, and games based on the Source engine such as Left 4 Dead 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, and DotA 2.

A Radeon HD7870 (R9 270X and R9 270 is a rebrand of this card), GTX 760, Radeon HD7950, Radeon HD7970 (R9 280X is a rebrand of this card), or GTX 770 is suggested for playing AAA titles such as Crysis and Battlefield on reasonably high settings at 1920x1080. The latter two are also suggested for reasonably high settings at 2560x1440.

A R9 290 or GTX 780 is suggested if you are obsessed with max settings.

That has got to be a couple of generations old, right?

Generally I dislike complaining without offering a contribution myself, but I came here to seek help about which GPU to prefer for 1440p gaming, so I'm effectively Jon Snow.

Memory will usually fall back to the slowest frequency & timings used by either stick but you're more likely to have issues with mismatched sticks.

Even buying the exact same product a week later there are sometimes multiple different types of memory with minor performance and configuration differences that have the same name and sticker on them so it can be rather complex to get two sticks of the same stuff without buying a prepackaged kit

I don't think there's much choice here - if you're buying new then you have a rough scale of performance:

rx470 / 1060 3GB
rx480 / 1060 6GB
-------------------------
1070
1080

would lean towards 1070 myself cause it's a lot faster than an rx480 or 1060 but the 1080+ seems way overpriced and a big drop in perf/$ - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1748?vs=1731

can drop a tier to 1060 6GB, rx480 8GB for saving money or go up to 1080 for more performance. I don't think the Fury X is worth it w/ 4GB VRAM limitation in -current year-

The perf/dollar is actually not that far off because performance gap is big (at least vs 1060 6GB)

The new 8GB RX480 from XFX looks promising but over here the 8gig is a mystical 373€ and the 4gig is 290€, while double fan 1070's start from 460€
;_;

6GB 1060's on the other hand start from ~270€

Currently have an i5 3570k OC at 4.2 Ghz, and a GTX 760.

I feel like my CPU has a few years in it still but am looking to improve my Graphics card. I am looking at the RX480 as that seems to have a very good 1080p quality to dollar performance ratio (and my monitors are only 1600x900 atm)

I saw this on Amazon.ca
https://www.amazon.ca/MSI-RX-480-GAMING-4G/dp/B01K1JTT8S/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3_m?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1476380510&sr=1-3-fkmr0&keywords=RX480+MSI+Gaming+X&th=1

I am thinking about grabbing the 4GB model as its only 350 CAD. Any thoughts? Alternative recommendations? The 10 series nvidia cards seem far too expensive for me atm especially since I won't be playing any 4k resolution stuff any time soon.

And I saw the post from Cyro about the 1070 but those are nearly double the price compared to an RX480 here in Canada (580 is cheapest I've seen) and once you add 13% tax to both of those items you get

395.50 (for the 4GB RX480)

658.80 (for the 1070)

Not sure paying almost twice as much is worth it for the performance boost between the 1070 and the 480 for me.

That's a +66.6% price increase - the performance gap is equally large in many titles http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1749?vs=1731

That performance level (rx480 4gb) is pretty good for 1080p60 today
