Couple quick things:

RAM: You can get faster RAM for less money (3000/15 kits for $85, 3200/16 for $95, etc). Skylake likes fast RAM.
Storage: Seems like solid 512GB SSDs go on sale for ~$100 pretty regularly. Otherwise you can find 256s for ~$50-60.
PSU: EVGA's G2 line is pretty highly regarded. Seems like it's worth the extra $10 over the G1

Oh, and the 6700K goes on sale pretty often for ~$300 https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/58j4ml/cpu_intel_core_i76700k_8m_skylake_quadcore_40_ghz/

Posted a page ago about cpu and gfx card getting too hot and causing issues while playing games. Cleaned both out and cpu seems fine but now gfx card still is getting much too hot. In games (that aren't that gfx intensive tbh, and low settings) my gfx card was reaching over 100 degrees. The fan is spinning and I cleaned it out so there is no dust. Do they sometimes just run hot after having them for several years or should I check something else?

Only thing I notice is that the fan speed spins fast and slow seemingly randomly, even when it is running that hot. It seems like it should be fast when it is that high but it randomly speeds way up then slows down again, not sure if that matters.

Sounds like it might be a heatsink issue on the graphics card. Some fresh thermal paste would be the next thing I would try.

Not sure what you need from a H170 mobo compare to a cheaper H110 or B150 mobo, except may be built in wifi. If you can find any H110 or B150 that has WiFi and cheaper, by all means swap it.

As for ram, any ddr4 2133mhz ram should do. Can just go with 2x4GBkit, although with mini itx board that means you cant upgrade to 16gb in the future. But i dont see the need of 16gb ram, unless you browsing means opening millions chrome tab

dual channel isnt of utmost importance in this case so if upgradability is even a concern for this, a single 8GB stick for starters will do

Getting the H170 mainly for the WiFi. And yea 1 stick of RAM is most likely the way to go.

Yeah, I did a quick check on pcpartpicker.com, price doesnt seem to differ much even dropping to lower end board. The Gigabyte GA-H170N-WIFI is a solid choice actually, built 2 systems with it for friends.

Then just grab any cheap stick of 8GB 2133MHz DDR4 RAM that you like.

Anyway, just realize the case Core 1100 as inverted PSU, which I just personally don't like :p and only use it if you are going to put your case on carpet or similar. Can consider the Core 1300 for bottom mount PSU instead :p. Or CM N200, or Thermaltake Core V1 (smaller case, but cube shape)

Hey guys looking for some help on my family's new PC. The current one is from 2005 and is run down and struggles with even simple tasks. They don't need much just something to run a few games on medium settings.

Thanks in advance,
-Johnnycashew

What is your budget?
I'd like to only spend about $400-$500.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1680x1050

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Let's just say Final Fantasy 14 on medium settings would be more than sufficient.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Watching movies and streams.

Do you intend to overclock?
No.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No.

Do you need an operating system?
Yes.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Will be recycling old peripherals, so no.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
No preferences.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
United States.

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Newegg or Amazon retailers I guess.

Yeah so what should you do if you have one of those cards but it hasn't gone up in smoke yet? Apply the free thermal pad yourself?

Or get EVGA to do it via RMA.. It's really awkward, proper VRM/VRAM cooling is basic shit when designing a graphics card. People screw it up over and over but i'm surprised to see a design from EVGA that's fatally bad at stock settings. They also denied this stuff for a while when dealing with customers and the PC hardware community..

What would be the best performance per dollar CPU/RAM/GPU/Monitor combo for 1080p@144Hz gaming?
I mainly want to play sc2/OW/LoL (even my current computer can play LoL easily but I put it there just in case?), maybe be able to stream it. Some mainstream solo games probably as well, but it's not the priority.

I know sc2 is CPU capped, will Kaby Lake processors be a worth waiting improvement for the game?

I'm thinking about i5 6600k, Nvidia GTX 1060 (6GB I guess?), 16 GB DDR4 (no idea about the exact set?), and no idea about the monitor except 1080p/144Hz (my first guess would be to take one of those used by OW/LoL players since you can find the reference easily and they don't seem overly expensive, I saw some BenQ/Asus monitors on those lists).

Sc2 doesn't seem to use CPUs well, so I guess you can't have "good enough, above that would be overkill" with that game, but I don't think the 6700K will offer better enough performance for the price increase.
The 1060 seems as capable as the 970 which iirc was good enough for all games 1080p, since it's not really expensive I think it has good performance per dollar.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

1060 is around 980 tier for FPS. You have to drop a bunch of settings to keep OW around 150+FPS but it's doable.

should get ~3000mhz+ RAM

SC2 has most of the CPU load on one core and leaves the others idle, Overwatch puts load on many cores so it will highly load a 4c8t CPU and nearly max out a 4c. That's pretty nice for efficiency but it makes reliably streaming with CPU encoding difficult at best because there is very little CPU left over. I think overall for effectiveness vs cost, 6600k is probably good and will run sc2 as good as anything else but you'd have to look to other streaming methods (like NVENC) for overwatch; 6700k isn't an awful idea.

The 1060 seems as capable as the 970 which iirc was good enough for all games 1080p

144fps is ~2.4x more demanding than 60fps and the 970 got that reputation more than two years ago

It's not clear what Kaby lake will bring, there is no reliable information about anything that i've seen aside from a new CPU package + IHS.

Thank you for the answer.
So basically for sc2+stream 1060/6600k is the most interesting but for OW compromises must be made. What is NVENC? Seems like the GPU helping the CPU encode the video or something like that?
Will a 6700k be able to stream OW then with the power left over or you'll need NVENC as well?

So basically the best combo for OW @144fps+stream is 6700k/1070?

What will be the advantages of 3000Mhz RAM compared to the 2133 sticks?

Since pro gamers are sponsored, are their monitors still fine? (I know I would avoid the razer mice so maybe it could be the same for some of their monitors)
