Get a strong CPU, core number shouldn't matter, but you want as high a frequency as you can get, and 16GB of RAM, the i7-HQ as mentioned above is good, the graphics card shouldn't matter as much so don't pour all your resources into it.

It's really going to depend on what he's actually doing and whether the software/type of work supports GPU acceleration on processing. Some AutoCAD work is extremely lightweight, some makes really effective use of a GPU, some doesn't use GPU at all (iGPU being good enough), some is heavy on both.

someone just asked to buy my msi 970 4g for $250. at that price point i figure why not, and use the money towards a 1070. seems like a no brainer right? not that i actually need the 1070 but for an additional $150 i think that is pretty solid.

just follow this general template at a Canadian hardware seller:

http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/CRRscf/modest-gaming-build

that's 760USD ~ 1000CAD.

You can get a 470 instead of a 480 and/or skip out on the mechanical hard drive all together (always can get one later or just get a bigger ssd in the first place) to compensate for higher CAD prices.

240GB is more than enough for windows + overwatch + misc stuff like browser. also you can download windows from microsoft legit. you just need a key.

Make sure to get a psu from a reputable company of at least 450 Watts.

Thanks for the link I can work with that!
I've used pcpartpicker before but should browse the guide builds more to get a better idea of price ranges. i guess DDR4 is the standard now?

yeah ddr4 is the standard moving forward.

This is basically a guide with the stuff I mentioned cut out w/ a cheaper dual core CPU and case, 470 instead of the 480:

http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/P2YcCJ/entry-level-gaming-build

I would probably spring for the i5 over the i3, but if the 470 is way cheaper than the 480 in Canada go with that. IMO it's better to have a solid CPU and upgrade just the GPU whenever you feel necessary (say 3-4 years) b/c gpus improve much faster than cpus.

I have a 8 years old HP LP3065 monitor that requires a 2 dual-link DVI-D input signal from graphic card. Last generation that had 2 DVIs was gfx970 that i currently own. Is there any adapter that i can use for gfx1080 series that only has 1 DVI or do i need a new monitor ?

You mean GTX 1080? Should be DisplayPort to DVI available. Look for ones that'll support 1440p/1600p, since those will have to be dual link to work.

Yes i meant gtx 1080, they used to be called gfx a while ago I cant find any 1600p, unfortunately most of those adapters support only up to1200p or there is no info at all. Half the stores provide 0 info what res does it support.

sigh... 120$ for an adapter, i thought adapters are suppose to be cheap solutions

Dual-link doesn't mean two DVI ports, it's a different configuration on the DVI connector.

The reference gtx1080 and probably most others have a single DVI-D Dual Link connctor. AFAIK that's all that you need unless you're trying to run two screens straight from DVI.

Sorry i made a crucial typo.
My monitor has two cables and both are DVI dual link (one of each) so my graphic card obv needs to have two ports to plug those in (its a 8 year old monitor). But gtx1080 series has only one DVI socket. Im asking if its possible to use adapter and which one it has to be (need to support 2560x1600) but i think i found one and they cost 120ish$

An early 2560x1600

1080 comes default with one dual link DVI-D, triple displayport, one HDMI and while a few cards have a different setup, i'm not aware of any of them adding a second dual-link DVI.

I don't know anything about displayport to dual link dvi adapters either - the specs list for them may not expect having two inputs for one screen so a basic £5 adapter might work for you.

I found this
http://www.accellcables.com/products/ultraav-displayport-to-dvi-d-dual-link-adapter?variant=729675257
But if my monitor has DVI-D and DVI-I cables and gtx1080 has DVI-D. I would need DVI-I adapter ? I assume those arent interchangable/compatible ( ? )

Meh i think im better off buying 144hz monitor, i just wish theyd still produce 16;10 monitors

DVI-I has extra pins for an analog signal - you won't get this signal from either a gtx1080 or from a displayport to DVI passive adapter as both the DVI-D and displayport are digital only

RIP 16:10 indeed, 16 by 9 is rather squished

What are people's thoughts on the 3gb vs 6gb 1060's?

Particularly if one plans on staying at 1080p for a few years at least?

3GB VRAM (even 4GB VRAM) can't max all settings on everything so you will have to turn down a few like texture resolution on VRAM-heavy games but it's fine to use. The 3GB 1060 actually has a slightly cut down GPU so it's edit: ~5% slower than the 6GB one as well

I think its currently close in 1080p but the difference may grow in the future when the game requirements change. IIRC in some games fps gain will be nearly nonexistant in 6gb vs 3gb but people say games will be more demanding memory wise in the future. So paying these 20-30% more (or w/e the diff is) for 6gb the next 1-2 years probably not the best idea but if you stay on it for 4-5years it may "pay off".
