WIth that build you should run the latest games fine, although with a 4460 you're in kind of the same boat as I am: On some games you'll be CPU bound to hell and back. A 960 isn't as big of a difference as my 970 is, but it still might be noticable. That said, the 960 is meant to be a 1080p card and you can expect 60+FPS on decent settings on most new games. For GTA, again, we won't know how CPU limited it'll be (chances are: very), so in that case you'll probably want an i5 4690k and (mildly) OC it. For the Witcher you should be more fine.

Another thing I am not sure of is the support for integrated GPUs and the motherboard type. I will have to use the integrated HD4600 for some time until my 960 arrives. Are integrated GPUs available on all motherboard types even on H81/B85?

The integrated GPU has been inside the CPU chip itself (on consumer models) for a few years now. If the motherboard has video output ports it is allowing access to that functionality.

So does anyone have advice for me regarding my last post:

+ Show Spoiler +
Just looking at the gt 740.
The nVidia site lists that it is 1gb of gddr5 OR 2 gb of ddr3:
http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-740/specifications

However on the scan site it lists both as gddr5
1gb version:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-evga-gt-740-superclocked-28nm-5000mhz-gddr5-gpu-1085mhz-384-cores-dvi-d-dvi-i-hdmi

2gb version:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-evga-gt-740-superclocked-28nm-5000mhz-gddr3-gpu-1085mhz-384-cores-dvi-d-dvi-i-hdmi

And its the same on the evga site.
http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=01G-P4-3743-KR
http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=02G-P4-3747-KR

I am thinking I will get the 1gb version to be safe.

Also, I am going to get a new 1tb harddrive and install debian on it, and use this as my main environment. Currently my machine is running xp. I have installed debian before on a different machine. I have not dual booted before. I intend to move my files and music over to the new hard drive and not use xp at all.
What do you guys recommend I should do in terms of the order of tasks?
Get the gpu working on the xp version first? Do a bios update through xp if it is required to get the gpu working.
Then get all my files and music etc onto an external drive.
Then plug in the new 1tb hard drive and immediately install debian on it.
Then wipe the xp drive and use it for back ups in the debian system.

Also to add, the hard drive Im currently looking to buy is the Western Digital Blue sata 3, specifically this one:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-wd-blue-wd10ezex-sata-iii-6gb-s-7200rpm-64mb-cache-8ms-oem-hdd
My understanding that they are backwards compatible with older motherboards but ofcourse wont run at the full speed. However, the price is the same so I figure I may as well buy sata 3.
My mobo: nForce 650i (C55)

Also, wow the prices have changed since I last posted a few days ago. Before, both gt 740 cards were £71 but now the 1gb has gone up to £74. So the 2gb is less lol. Is this another clue that the 2gb is infact ddr3 and not gddr5?
And the hard drive has gone up too! From £41 to £43. Yikes

Oh, the card manufacturers are liable to release different memory configurations than what AMD and Nvidia list. I didn't really see your post earlier. If it says GDDR5 on the 2 GB model, it probably is using GDDR5.

You don't need to get the GPU working on XP first, but I would do that just to make sure it works. Maybe there's some incompatibility issue in Linux with this newer card and older motherboard. You never know about the driver and subsystem interactions. Seeing the card work at all will rule out a hardware issue if you run into problems later. I don't think you will, but it's something to consider.

It's probably a good idea to buy a newer (model) drive, which will end up being SATA 3. It's more likely to be faster and quieter.

Upgrade Question

What is your current build?

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
Speed 2.8 GHz
Number of Cores 8

Video Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
Dedicated Memory 896 MB
Total Memory 3.6 GB

Memory 6.2 GB

Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (build 7600), 64-bit

What is your monitor's native resolution?

1920 x 1080

Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?

I built my computer years ago for gaming. It has a GTX 275. That card has played all the games I ever wanted on high or medium settings. Just played Arkham Origins with no problems, thogh I did have to scale back the graphics some. I just bought Shadows of Mordor and can't play it because of no DX 11 support.

I want a new card that gives me equal or better performance than my GTX 275. I have no idea if the newer budget cards will work better than the 275 or not. Some benchmarking sites suggest that my 275 is better than many cheaper cards that will support DX 11, so I want a card at least as good as the GTX 275 with DX 11 support.

What is your budget?

under $100 if posibble. If not up to $300

What country will you be buying your parts in?

US

If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify.

I like Nvida, but for no good reason other than branding. Should I switch.

You should at least make a minor upgrade i think. Maybe 750ti or 960 on nvidia side - 270 or 280 on radeon

guessing performance from some specs and old data, a 750/260x should be a little bit better - but a 750ti or 270 will have 2GB of VRAM instead of 1GB and be faster. The 960 and 280 are stronger and more expensive, much further away from the low end.

You don't have 8 cores. It is 4 cores.

It's 4 physical cores, 8 logical cores, though I guess it'd be more accurate to call them logical CPUs or threads.

What is your budget?
I'm not sure about this, i hope I can make this set up work for $1,500 or under

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920x1080

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Starcraft II, League of Legends, at High+ settings at least

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
My primary intent is to do market trading, so the most important thing to me is that it is reliably smooth while connected to the internet!

Do you intend to overclock?
No

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
Yes I do

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Yes, I need a set up that will accommodate 6 monitors

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
I'm not big on brands, I'm mostly concerned with being able to support a very smooth 6 monitor set-up, at the lowest possible price (while still being reliable)

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Canada

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
I'm open to new ones, but I've used NCIX before and they were a pleasure to work with

Thank you in advance for your help!!1 <3

Six monitors is going to be hard to fit in a 1500$ budget if they need to be 1080p or above, considering budget 1080p monitors cost about $140, that's already almost half of your budget gone. Aside from that you'd need to have an AMD card for sure considering I don't think NVIDIA supports 6-monitor surround just like that so far?

On the SC2 side, I'm not sure if you should expect high settings at 60+ FPS. I sometimes struggle to stay above 80 on lowest settings with my i5 4670 - Not overclocked of course. For other games this shouldn't be any issue whatsoever though.

sc2 CPU demand just changes a lot depending on how many units are on the map and what they're doing. You can easily have 500fps at the start of the game, but dip to 50 in a 2v2 fight, and no graphics setting really impacts that at all (aside from physics, reflections and effects which make FPS lower when CPU bound)

Maximum of $900.00

What is your monitor's native resolution?
Unknown but would be using a television in place of a monitor.

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Tera, Far Cry, usually recently released games and on highest settings.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Mostly gaming, movie watching, videos, etc.

Do you intend to overclock?
No

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
No

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
Nvidia and Intel

What country will you be buying your parts in?
U.S.

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Typically NewEgg due to not taxes.

This is actually not for me but a friend I am trying to help build her first Pc. She wanted a Pc for $700-$900 that would last a reasonably good amount of time. Due to this being her first pc being built, I avoided going for OC (overclocking) CPU and Mobo (to save some cash). I have a build and mostly looking for advice on if it seems fine and should not have any issues. This is the current build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CnzrXL

Mobos tend to be my biggest concern but since I am going with H97 and not Z97, its price did drop to below $100 which meant could go for the GeForce 970 instead of 960. If any glaring issues, please let me know.

^Looks pretty solid aside from maybe the SSD (idk, never heard of that one) and your pcpartpicker is set to use every shop, which would mean ordering from 4 different places there. You can set it to newegg only and it will show the prices and availability from there

Check the TV though, most TV's have more input lag than good monitors and some of them have a lot of input lag that you can't get rid of and that can destroy the experience with any system specs. Typical PC input lag is around ~35ms for reference

Thanks for the advice. I was mostly using the site to allocate all the items in one area. I too did not know of them although from what I saw, many did approve. I had two other choices that I was considering:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820721107&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

and

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0D9-0021-00005&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

I did mention the Kingston but apparently she has had, well, let's just say not the best experience with their merchandise. So she is a bit reluctant in getting a kingston (would suggest intel but they are rather more expensive, even though that is what I would have gone for). Silicon one seemed fine but it is the same issue as A-data, I do not know the brand very well.

I cannot recall the exact model now but I do remember looking at the TV she was looking to buy and the comments generally seemed fine in terms of gaming. Did not see any comments on there being any noticeable input lag (well, it is subjective but she is not the most intense gamer out there). And yes, already tried convincing for a monitor but she wishes for a new Tv hehe.

Honestly gaming is more of an afterthough with this setup.
If I can play on the same computer I work at, then great. But if not, I should be able to hold off
Do you think around $2,000-$2,500 is more of what I'm looking to spend?
Do I need 6 different video cards? what kind of processor do I need for all of this to run smoothly?

Thanks for your help!

About 600 CAD on the system itself should be sufficient on the lower end, with 1000 or so being reasonable. What monitors do you have or will you buy? You definitely don't need a video card per monitor, but how many you get (read: one or two) will depend on what video connections you need for them. Basically unless you're making a computer crunch numbers (simulations, encoding, etc.) or render detailed 3D models and effects in real time in a continuous fashion and as fast as possible, you're not making it break a sweat, so nothing special is needed.

I will need to buy monitors, so let's say ~1,000 on the system, ~1,200 on the monitors, plus OS and other stuff should put me at about 2500-2800 correct? I would need to pay for shipping as well as assembly costs as I'm afraid to assemble it myself.
What about something to hold the monitors up? I'm looking for something like this
http://www.tradingcomputers.co.uk/img/arrays/6MonitorArray.png
Do I need special monitors to mount them up?

If so, I might need a little bit more time to get the necessary funds, but I'm looking to get this in the next couple of weeks hopefully.
When would be a good time to purchase this set up? Am I pretty much waiting for a good monitor sale to buy?
Is it better to buy all at once, or wait for certain parts to go on sale and then buy the rest whenever I can get the rest of the money?

Those things usually use vesa mounts for the monitors - so you do kinda need certain monitors, but not really. It's a standard that's quite widespread on decent monitors
