Feel free to ask questions. Just for reference, here's my boilerplate: We have not announced any product details, specifications or pricing for TITAN X. Those details will be provided at the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference on March 17th.

12GB VRAM confirmed though

I feel a little silly asking this on a forum mostly dedicated to gaming, but TL always has the best and friendliest people.

I want to build a simple virtualization platform for testing different infrastructure solutions and building test environments.
The idea is to build a box with a lot of RAM and a decent CPU for running around 8 UNIX or WS08 VMs. The RAM seems to be the biggest issue, I would need about 16 GB minimum.
I also want it to take as little room as possible so an mITX case or smaller would be preferable.
The problem I am having is that the price quickly goes out of control.Do you guys have any ideas of a not so costly build?

+ Show Spoiler [The questions] +
What is your budget?
Around $600 - That's the problem

What is your monitor's native resolution?
N/A

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
None

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Virtualization of infrastructure for testing purposes

Do you intend to overclock?
No

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
Nope, will be running vSphere.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Nope, I got what I need already in that regard.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
Minimum 16 GB of ram, 4 core processor (hyper-threading would be sweet) and preferably a small case.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Sweden

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
No preferences.

Thank you!
I mean nobody wants to admit they eat 9 cans of ravioli, but I did and I'm ashamed of myself. The first can doesn't count and then you get to the second, and the third. The fourth and fifth I think I burnt with the blow torch and I just kept eating.

Hi TL, I'm looking for advice on whether or not a Noctua NH 14D heatsink would fit my case.

My hardware setup is as follows:

Case: Antec Solo II
PSU: 850W Cooler Master (I forget the exact model)
Mobo: ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3
CPU: i7 3770 3.4GHz with stock cooler
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 980 Windforce OC
Ram: 4x4GB DDR3 GSkill Ripjaws

Mobo: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z68 Extreme4 Gen3/index.asp?cat=
Case: http://www.antec.com/product.php?id=705179&fid=5022021&lan=nz
Heatsink: http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=34&lng=en&set=1

I've measured the distance from the base of my mobo to the side of the case, which is approximately 175mm, which would leaving roughly 10 to 12mm space between the cooler and case. Will this small distance produce any airflow issues? As you can see from the mobo, the GPU sits beneath the CPU and takes up a fair amount of space.

According to the Noctua site, my ram and mobo should both be able to accommodate the heatsink.

It'd be pretty close, your case says 160mm CPU cooler height and the requirement for nh-d14 seems to be 160mm. Why do you want a d14? You can't OC an i7 3770.

The airflow would go from the front of your case to the back, so being close to the side panel doesn't affect it, but it would have to physically fit

HI, I just saw on the specification of i5-4690k that it supports DDR3 1333/1600 MHz RAM. Is there benefit of getting faster RAM like 1866 or 2133MHz?
Also, someone who has tried it please recommend how much should I overclock the 4690K to have decent performance in SC2 on 1440p High Settings. Thanks much

i think faster RAM is supported by motherboards, not CPU

an i5 should be overclocked as much as you can for sc2, though even if the game is CPU bound i'm pretty sure it's not gpu bound. so you'll get roughly the same fps at 1080p as you will at 1440p

What is your budget?
$400. Already have peripherals and monitor.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920x1080

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Browser games, mostly

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
streaming netflix, sending emails, using a web browser and viewing PDFs

Do you intend to overclock?
no

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
no

Do you need an operating system?
no

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
no need, already have these items

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
no preferences, though in terms of size nothing too large

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Amazon and Newegg are liked best. I can't reach a microcenter.

So basically my dad wants a new home computer. It will need to be able to do netflix, basic word processing, and his web browsing and emailing. It needs to connect to his wi-fi network and read DVDs. The budget, including shipping and california's 7.5% sales tax, is $400. He has a keyboard, mouse, USB printer, and 1920x1080 monitor he wants to be compatible. I'm leaning towardsa G3220 since I've heard it has decent integrated graphics (good enough for driving one 1080p monitor and streaming video, I suppose) and I have the budget for it. an APU might be a better move though. Here's what I had in mind:

Source 210 might be cheaper than Source 220 and be more than enough for what you have in mind here.

$55 for 8 gb of RAM is insane, damn, well found.

Otherwise, does your dad need that much storage? Maybe a small SSD, just to make the system more responsive (e.g. <10 second boot time for windows) might be worth considering.

Thanks. Regarding OC-ing i5, i was just a bit unsure as of how much more power is just enough (minimum) as I dont feel like pushing it too hard though. And what are some decent mid-range cooler should I get as I dont think stock cooler is enough for oc-ing, or is stock cooler fine if I do some minimum oc-ing?

You should get an aftermarket cooler. There's no such thing as "just enough", you'll always be very highly CPU bound in sc2. 5% more frequency will give 5% more FPS, and that'd be true even if our CPU's were 5 times faster. Whatever overclock you hit with ~1.25 - 1.35vcore is fine. You can't say what frequency it would end up at beforehand because of the silicon lottery, but you can plan motherboard and cooling around the voltage range that you want to use

I'm not sure what's best to get in singapore but some midrange air at least

@Blazinghand
Power Supply: Rosewill 350W ATX Power Supply ($26.73 @ Amazon)
That PSU looks pretty awful. Googled for a sec, full specs and reviews are either entirely missing or hard to find. Says dual rail and 350w "max" (not continuous), isn't 80+ etc. Might be alright to use for a low power system not needing pci-e power, but it might also be a fire hazard

Of course it's not 80+. It has a voltage selector switch (so a voltage doubler circuit, no APFC, not high enough power factor for 80+ standards)

More importantly, that's one of the old models from the so-called Rosekill days, one from Deer (Solytech, Apex, Allied, etc.). Just start Googling those names and see what comes up. This is typical and not a cherry-picked example:

Normally I would take it as more expensive = better performance but then it probably wont be true across brands. Would you mind suggesting 2-3 decent mid-range cooler from that list please, in case some is out of stock or not available any more. THank you very much

The Zalman and Silverstone stuff is overpriced there. I'm not entirely sure either, but I'd pick the Cooler Master Hyper 212X. Possibly the Prolimatech Armageddon if you're interested in maximizing an overclock, have the space, and already have a decent 14 cm fan handy. The Noctua NH-D15 if you don't have the fans.

For a non-enthusiast overclocker I wouldn't spend money on a top heatsink, though, so probably the Hyper 212X. Some better options available elsewhere for roughly the same price or slightly more might bee ideal, but you can't buy what's not on sale.

Also, is it reasonable to assume that bigger heatsink + bigger fan = better cooling?

The large HD is because dad has lots of documents (videos, pictures, music etc) scattered across several HDs right now and I want them all available on his computer.

At $55, just spend $5 more to get a Rosewill Capstone at $60, which is infinitely better at everything: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066

You don't want a Western Digital Green as your primary drive, you want a Western Digital Blue or another 7200 RPM drive.
