GTX 970s are more amazing the more I read about 'em. They seem to run ~10°C cooler than a 7970, they're very quiet under load and they have ~30 - 40% more performance, depending on game.
30-40% more performance? That sounds way too low to me. I was looking at more like 70, considering they're hitting 1600 on air in edge cases, 1500 seems normal.
The numbers are less pronounced stock vs stock but remember that 760/770 has basically zero OC headroom. My stock is 1254mhz, max OC through all tools is 1280 - but people are showing legit 1.2x performance gains from oc on 970

On another note: I finally solved the NAS issue. It was what I had eventually narrowed it down to: the f**king motherboard I got had a BIOS that was at least more than 6 months old and didn't support the CPU I had (god knows what kind of bios update you need to support a standard Haswell non-refresh CPU).
Out another $60, but at least it's alive.
Actually, BIOS date is 7/15/2013. I'm so salty.

I wanted to be conservative and didn't take overclock into account, just compared 280X's performance with the 970's and saw that you had sometimes a 30% gap in performance, sometimes up to 50% more performance out of the 970. Indeed, with overclocking you'd get an even bigger gap, crazy stuff.
Especially since you can use this incredible performer with a 450W PSU easy.
sexy sexy
I wonder if I should feel bad for AMD or something though. They've always had the bang-for-buck going for them, but the power usage that Nvidia cards are offering is becoming incredibly hard to ignore. Not even talking about G-sync and stuff.
E: ouch, craton did you buy a pentium or something to update BIOS?

It's beautiful :')

FYI it pulls 200W spike on load and 100W in use. Only has 5 fans on low-medium, 6 HDDs, CPU, and heatsink fan (headless with onboard graphics as needed).
Lower draw than expected for use, but higher than expected different for load. I picked up a ~390W one for $70 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842101494). Probably could've gotten something cheaper, but $70 seemed alright considering the cost and value of the NAS itself.

NZXT Source 2x0?
That lonely connection with the APC UPS has me a little freaked out, though. What's the computer also hooked up to (monitor, TV, what it's getting the Ethernet from, etc.) and why isn't that stuff also plugged into the APC? ...just checking.
|
The ethernet runs through the UPS, the PC is plugged into the UPS. There's a USB running from the UPS to the PC so it can tell it power was lost. It's not connected to a monitor of any sort (it was when I first set it up, but there's a web GUI when it's running - you can get to the shell through the web GUI also).
It's the NZXT Source 210 Elite Black yada yada. It's the one that was horribly bent at the bottom. Having had another piece of shit refurb from newegg recently, I don't think I'll be getting anything refurb from them ever again.
In any event, some gentle percussive maintenance straightened out the case enough to get the PSU to fit (it's bottom mounted anyway).

Oh yeah, that computer, duh.
I guess the fact that a NAS is inside a normal midtower was throwing me off. That and my bad memory / lack of imagination. Something!

In my defense, the second post on this page mentioned the NAS finally worked with a different CPU .
My desktop looks a little different than that guy... + Show Spoiler +

Sometimes 4 TL.net windows just isn't enough. Maybe that was my problem.

Does anyone here have experience with G-sync monitors? I want to get a 144hz monitor with my GTX 970 to play games with both competitive and single player, but not sure if gsync can justify the +€150 cost. It's awesome for mid-end rigs but is it equally great on ''high end'' systems?

In practical use I normally have IRC on the top right, something I'm kind of but not really watching top left, something im half watching on the bottom right with audio, and then left and mid are some combination of programming IDE or browsers. Back when I was teleworking I'd keep email and IM clients on the top left.
Sometimes I don't even make full use of 4, other times I wish I had 7.

What is your budget? ► $1000 - $1200. But if similar products for a lower price are able to meet requirements, is much preferred.
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? ► Currently DotA 2 and StarCraft II, preferably on the best settings possible if not anything near that - without encountering significant frame drop and/or lag. Not sure if relevant, but occasionally I’ll install then remove games like CS 1.6, Age of Empires, StarCraft: Brood War to play with friends.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? ► I’m also a FX trader so I mainly run MetaTrader 4, SaxoTrader & Autobahn platforms, but I do not think they require too much high-end specifications. Apart from that, I would mainly just use it for media purposes - music, movies, TV shows. Definitely no video editing or anything like that, but I would like to be covered for streaming purposes if and where possible - but not mandatory.
Do you intend to overclock? ► Well, based on my needs I would say I don’t see a need to overclock but I would like the option to just in case I need to run any higher-end programs or applications that require better specifications than what I’m dealing with. But I’m not sure if running DotA 2 or StarCraft II on high/ultra settings would require overclocking - need some advice here.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? ► No.
Do you need an operating system? ► Yes, Windows.
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? ► No, not at this moment. I’ve already got monitors (1920x1080 & 1600x900), speakers, headset, keyboard, and mouse. Unless I’m missing out on something essential, I believe I have the other accessories covered.
What country will you be buying your parts in? ► Malaysia.
Do you have any requirements or brand preferences? ► I would need WiFi or wireless Internet capabilities built-in as I’m sharing a router with other devices. I would also prefer at least 4 USB ports (1 for external HDD, 1 for mouse, 1 for keyboard - but I believe I can switch my 6GV2 port if not mistaken, 1 for miscellaneous purposes). And I would also need an optical drive for CD/DVD playing. For graphics card, I would definitely prefer GTX because I think it is the better option (but I may be mistaken - so I may need help with this). As for casing, I very much like the Cooler Master HAF X - but I’m okay with switching it out to meet budget requirements. Also, I’m torn between HDD/SSD (I have a 1TB WD external HDD not used, not sure if this makes a difference) and whether or not I need additional cooling (air or liquid). My goal would ultimately to be to have a CPU that runs smoothly, doesn’t overheat easily and functions rather quietly. I'm open for any suggestions and if I can cut down on certain parts, do let me know. Then I could probably save up to get myself an extra monitor because ultimately I want to run 3 monitors for my trading setup if and when I can't access my work station. I also plan on building this so that I won't have to frequently upgrade/change parts in the future so I'm kinda hoping that the components would be sufficient to last for maybe 3-4 years (especially processor & graphics card). Would appreciate your advice and input. Thanks! Can anyone help me out please? ):

Either get yourself a new GTX 970 ($330) or wait for the 960 to come out, rumored in october. That CPU is way more powerful than the GPU too, so i'd probably up that a bit. Your case is very expensive, if you want to cut down the newly released NZXT S340 is amazing. For the games you're going to play you pretty much only need a killer CPU though. You could even get yourself a 750ti and be done with it even though you'd bottleneck yourself if you ever wantto play a demanding game GPU wise.

They are more quiet than none-reference cards of msi gtx 770 etc?

It is possible on some many boards to install an aftermarket GPU cooler, but you may as well just get the above for those games. Then again, if you got a GTX 770, I guess you could cap fps and/or just not load it up much, and it would be about the same volume.
If you care about noise levels a lot, you should be getting a different case anyway. Possibly a different power supply too, maybe a different hard drive, and an aftermarket CPU cooler.
Actually, even ignoring that, there's not really a reason to overspend on a HAF X and keep the vast majority of it empty and hardly cooling 150W worth of components.
It's hard to say what exactly to get without regional parts lists and prices, though.
edit: wait, I just realized I was addressing the wrong issue because people aren't the same person. Just can't figure out anything today.

running this on my 840 pro from June 2013, getting well over 400 MB/s on (virtually) all my files on that drive - finally a real advantage for Pro over Evo, not having this bug?

Yeah it felt abit weird.
Maybe my question is a bit vague tho so let me rephrase it. The new GPUs, they will be more quiet than the current quiet ones? Maybe its impossible to tell right now but its worth a shot.

The 970's etc are way more quiet at the same performance level. Are you more concerned for idle noise, or noise with everything fully loaded?
