When using this resource, please read the opening post. The Tech Support forum regulars have helped create countless of desktop systems without any compensation. The least you can do is provide all of the information required for them to help you properly. |
I'll answer the question sheet below. I'm just gonna link what I'm currently looking at first.
https://www.komplett.se/k/shoplist.aspx?mode=receive&si=1430842&su=C46AB279-E98E-48CF-9A66-92A08C39F8FA
As you can see it's everything besides a GFX and cooling. I've already got a good CPU cooler and a GTX 650. I'm planning to wait for the new GeForce series before I buy a new GFX card. GTX 650 should be enough for the games I'm playing right now, right? (check list below)
What is your budget? 10,000 SEK
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080 (+2048x1152 2nd monitor)
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? WoW SC2 Dota 2 All on max settings.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Poker. Filesharing. Fap.
Do you intend to overclock? Maybe.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Pref not.
Do you need an operating system? Nope.
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Nope.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Nope.
What country will you be buying your parts in? Sweden.
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. www.komplett.se

^650 is pretty weak. Usually i'd consider 650ti or 750 to be like bottom tier gaming cards and they're a step up from it, so it's a little odd to use with an OC i5
http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1125?vs=1130
It'd work fine, but i dunno about expecting max settings 1080p at like 80fps from it on all of those games
|
Well if you already have the 650 I think it makes sene to wait for Maxwell.
|
Thanks for the answers. Yeah I already have it in my current setup. Had to buy it last year to replace my old GFX card. I'll be fine with not using max settings right away. If it gets too bad I can always buy another card (currently trying to find a GTX 670).
|
What is your current build? my build I really hope no more info is required?
What is your monitor's native resolution? 19xx by something., maybe 1280?
Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade? I want to improve system performance, and load times.
I am looking a getting a SSD, but I do not know if I have a SATAIII plug for my systgem.
I also have two free slots for RAM, and might upgrade that as well. There are kingston hyperx in there.
What about the gtx470?
All upgrades have different budgets.
What is your budget? I would like to spend as little as possible, but around $100 would be ideal. If $200+ then I would consider other options.
What country will you be buying your parts in?
Canada. Likely Newegg.ca
If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify. No brand/retailer preferences.
Edit: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P7P55DE_PRO/specifications/
That link answers most of my questions. Now to find a good value SSD and maybe a GPU upgrade. Or is it worthwhile to add another 470gtx?

Howdy Gents,
It's about that time of the decade where I need to finally upgrade my old computer. She's lasted me a good 5 years and other than the occasional blue screen in the past year or so she's been running rock solid. That being said, I'm more or less going to build from scratch so that I can keep this one running for the wife or visiting friends that want to play some games with me.
In the past I've always researched and built my own computers. But, in the past five years I've completely lost touch with the world of computer hardware. Any help and insight into what's good these days would be greatly appreciated!
What is your budget? Somewhat flexible, between 1200-2000, more emphasis on the 1200 though Let's just say the "Joe still getting sex" scale still tips in my favor anywhere before 1500! Anything over 1500 and the wife might start looking at me like I killed her plants....again..
What is your monitor's native resolution? BenQ - 1920x1080
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Strife, CS:Go, SC2, LoL, HoN, D3, HS anything worthwhile in the future like Destiny(?) Max/high settings preferable.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? I stream Strife, CSGO and HS pretty regularly but would like to be able to stream at slightly higher quality with less FPS impact on my games (specifically CSGO)
Do you intend to overclock? Unlikely
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Unlikely assuming you can still get single cards that outperform dual cards. The option is there if you feel it's better.
Do you need an operating system? I'll probably pick up another copy of Windows 7. Not a fan of Win8
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Nope and Nope
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. I've always been a fan of XFX, EVGA, Asus, Gigabyte and G.Skill, but, as long as what you sell me on has solid customer support and works most of the time, pick what you like.
What country will you be buying your parts in? USA
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Newegg & Amazon

760 is very close to 670. They are both the same chip (a ton of stuff is gk104) but 760 has slightly more parts disabled, though usually has higher allowed voltages(?) so they're not functionally very different

I might have been staring blindly at http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-760-review-gk104,3542-9.html instead of accepting that they're very similar. So, if I'm trying to find a 670 I should probably be looking at 760 as well. :-)
Either way, I'll probably just wait for the new 800 series.

Hi, I'm thinking to buy a laptop for gaming and everyday use for Grad school. I'm not looking for something super fast and expensive like Razer Blade or any of the MSI/Alienware laptops. I'm looking for something that would cost 1500 USD max. I'll be playing World of Warcraft, Civilization V (And Civilization Beyond Earth), Diablo 3 and perhaps some other games like Bioshock Infinite, Arkham City, Watch Dogs etc. I don't care for max settings, just reasonably high resolution with good (30-45 fps min around high settings) performance.
So far myself I've found three possible laptops, Lenovo Y50, Lenovo Y510P and ASUS N550JV. Many people seem to recommend Y510P, however I may not be able to find a dual gpu version in Turkey, as far as I can see most places list single GPU version. Plus, the Y50 is not on sale here yet, and I'm going to travel on 18th of September. A friend of mine has N550JV and he's saying it's good aswell, but I can't decide.
1) Should I wait for a couple more weeks in case the Y50 is released in stores here? Or should I go for either Y510P or N550JV? 2) Can a Y510P (worst case with a single GPU) satisfy my needs? 3) Are there other alternatives I can look for?
Thanks for answers.

Just get a single GPU like an 850m/860m (gm107 with gddr5) that's twice as fast as the 750m in y510p if you're concerned about performance. No reason to worry about running 2x very weak cards
I checked that asus one - it's seems to be low profile laptop focused on low weight/noise/size instead of power. The official specs list says integrated graphics + 750m with DDR3 (not gddr5) which is limiting.
That's 384 cores @967mhz with 32GB/s of memory bandwidth.
For reference, a desktop gtx760 would have 1152 cores at ~1300mhz with ~220GB/s of memory bandwidth, so those GPU's listed are questionable for trying to game on high settings and resolution
^Those numbers are relevant because they're both kepler gpu's, but the Maxwell parts (some 850/860m's and a few others) have different performance core for core and with certain amounts of memory bandwidth so you can't compare as easily cross architecture

Hello!
Alright, so I'm about to build a PC, and I have a list of parts that I was planning to use. Was just checking in to see about how well they go together, and if there were better suggestions for parts.
I'm willing to spend up to $1200 without a monitor, and I do have one picked out, you just won't see it in the build, so I'll link to it. The games I play, usually mostly MMOs take up all my time, but with this I would like to play many of the newer games coming out like Assassin's Creed Unity, etc. I hope you get the idea. Also, I have no plans for overclocking, I just don't want to do that with this build.
PC parts: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Nathorin/saved/TYBG3C (Minus Windows 7 (I get Windows completely free through my school, so that money can be used on the hardware)
Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236112
Please let me know what you think, and how well this would run new games on ultra-ish.
Thanks!

Samsung 840 Pro is unnecessary for a gaming computer. Crucial MX100 is a vastly better value.
Seasonic M12II is good but it's old and doesn't provide a good value in comparison to the more modern offerings such as the Rosewill Capstone 450w or XFX XTR 550w. 600w+ is not necessary for a non-overclocked single GPU configuration, 450-550w already provides plenty of headroom for a 4690 and a GTX 770.
Only 9 series boards are guaranteed to support a Core i5 4690 (Haswell-R). No guarantee that the older 8 series boards such as the B85 Pro4 will ship with an updated BIOS to support the Core i5 4690. I think it's better to pick a H97 board rather than take the chance that a B85 will be shipped with an updated BIOS...

I have a P7P55DE_PRO with a GTX470 in it.
I want to upgrade the GTX470, but I am finding that I have limited options due to the PCIe 2.0 slot or slots.
I still am not quite sure which slot this GPU takes. The MOBO says it is sli capable, but I don't really understand that part.
Help! What is the best GPU or combo of GPU's this MOBO can take?

PCI-E 2.0 and 3.0 are backwards and forward compatible. a PCI-E 3.0 card will work fine and will not be bottlenecked in a PCI-E 2.0 slot.
SLI capable means you can add a second GTX 470 into the second PCI-E x16 slot so the two will work together to give you better performance.

Ok. Great news on the compatibility. I am still a complete noob when it comes to the stats and value.
I can't find any asus gtx470 anywhere, and don't even know if it is a good idea to get another. If I find one, it would not be the exact same type as the one I have.
The other option, is throw whatever else in there. Maybe a 760, or 770.
I want to be able to upgrade at a later date, but it seems like the only way would be to go dual 760's or something.
What do you recommend?
Looking at this: GTX760

GTX 760 would be a sizable upgrade from a GTX 470 but at the $300+ price point, you are better off with a GTX 770.

Hello folks,
first of all, thanks for this great source of know-how on computer parts and how to build a computer! My desk-bound laptop is seeing his last days after his 5 year lifespan so i decided to get some money on my hands and invest in a new desktop. I oriented myself on the "typical gamer" build which seems to suit me the best. I won't be overclocking since it's not really my thing and i don't think i will be needing it with that build for what im planning to use it for (mostly Dota, Minecraft, multimedia, office and maybe if Rockstar will give it to us GTA V). I'm willing to invest around 1000€ including a monitor which from my research for now seems to be doable. So my part list for now includes:
Processor: Intel Core i5-4690 RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) G.SKILL SNIPER DDR3-1600 LV CL9 Motherboard: ASROCK H97 Pro4 ATX Graphics card: ASUS GeForce GTX760-DC2T-2GD5-SSU Power supply: be-quiet! Straight Power E9 450W 80+ Gold SSD: 256GB CRUCIAL MX100 HDD: Western Digital WD Blue 500GB Disc drive: ASUS DRW-24F1ST Casing: Fractal Core 3000 (this is mandatory, haven't look much into the casing area, maybe i'll find something more beautiful) Monitor: Dell P2314H
With this setup i am at 1000,44€ if ordering from hardwareversand.de and Mindfactory.de
But before doing that i wanted to know your guys opinion on that composition. I guess since it equals the typical gamer build in every single aspect except the power supply there shouldn't be a problem? Another question is, do i need a cooler/heatsink for the processor or is that not necessary for the i5-4690 or is it included in the motherboard? (EDIT: ok the processor seems to come with included heatsink and cooling fan if i'm not mistaken.) Do i need a network adapter to use wifi or is that also included in the motherboard? Should i invest in a BluRay-drive rather than the old fashioned DVD or isn't it a big deal since most computer related things are coming on DVDs (is that even the case? Man i'm so outdated...) anyways?
Thanks in advance for your help!

you won't need an aftermarket cooler if you're not planning to overclock. Depending on prices, i would recommend an radeon r9 280x which is one tier up the gtx 760 as over here in singapore it's roughly 30-40 bucks more, well worth it.
no it won't come with a wireless adaptor, you will need to get a PCI-E wireless adapter, or USB one.
I bought a similar build to yours 2 weeks ago, but changed the PSU to hx600 super flower and the monitor to a U2414H.

There are motherboards that come with WiFi built in, but I don't know if there's one that can beat the price of a cheap board and a WiFi PCI-E expansion card.

Seems to be the same pricewise here in Germany. Should it be a Radeon R9 280X DirectCU II aswell? Cause there are a lot of other models flying around.

Yea i just checked that, isn't really much of an investment. Thanks man
