I can't control my sound volume in Windows! (But I can press the mute button on my sound card) This seems to be a pretty hardware-specific problem and I am unsure what causes this to happen.
Here are my hardware specifications: + Show Spoiler +Extras: - Logitech G510 gaming keyboard - Logitech G300 gaming mouse - Astro A40 gaming headset Hardware: - Sound Blaster Zx - B75MA-P45 MoBo - GeForce GTX 550 Ti - 8 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD - Intel Core i5 3.4 GHz - Thermaltake 240-Pin 600W PSU OS: - Windows 7 Home Premium (Activated) - 64-Bit
Okay... so I wouldn't be here if I didn't do my research. I've had this problem in the past, ignored it, rebuilt my computer (for other reasons), and I still have the problem.
Another note: in my A40 mixer, I have my headset plugged in in the front, mini-USB to USB plugged in (power), and an optical cable (sound) plugged into my sound card (optical out), which uses Dolby Digital 5.1.
In addition, my defaults in the sound is: Playback: A40 Gaming Headset (Sound Blaster Z) is set as default, and Sound Card (Sound Blaster Z) is enabled, but not default device. Recording: A40 Gaming Headset (ASTRO Gaming USB MixAmp) is set as default, and Sound Card (Sound Blaster Z) is enabled, but not default device. When I am playing sound, for the playback, my A40 Gaming Headset (in Sound > Playback) shows the green bar. When I am talking, for the recording, my soundcard (in Sound > Recording) shows the green bar.
The only way I can currently control my volume is by using the MixAmp itself or using Windows's Volume Mixer and lowering the individual program's volume bar. I want to be able to use my keyboard's volume control!
Thank you!

the keyboard's drivers should control this so double check the settings in the logitech keyboard app.

The keyboard's volume control is basically left-clicking on the sound button in the taskbar for me and turning it higher or lower. The problem is that the volume control (such as putting it at 50% volume, 75%, 100%, etc.) doesn't work.

there is no way to re-map the roller bar to vol+/vol- in the logitech app?

you might have to use a 3rd party key mapper then. i dont use one so i cant recommend anything specific, but google is always there to help.
there was this post here where the windows HID service wasnt on. usually it is on, but you might as well double check.

Like I said, it's not really the keyboard I'm worried about (that comes second). Even using the mouse on the main sound slider bar doesn't work. The keyboard is doing exactly what the mouse does (which is what I want). Also, my headset isn't plugged into the keyboard, in case that wasn't clear.

Am I able to control volume through an optical cable? If not, is there another way to get Dolby Digital 5.1 w/o optical?

Have you tried disabling the second playback device (Sound Blaster Z) that you said was enabled, but not in use ?
Have you made sure that the Windows Audio/HID services are running ? If you hook something up to your card's analog ports (i.e. stop using the mixamp/headset) and reboot, do you still have the same problem ?
This sounds like a software issue to me, I have a G510 and the roller controls the master volume, not the per app one.

This sounds like a software issue to me, I have a G510 and the roller controls the master volume, not the per app one. When I disable the Sound Blaster Z playback device, there is no sound, even though there is never a green bar indicating that sound is playing on that device. Why? Because someone couldn't make hooking up a sound card with 5.1 with a MixAmp any harder to do.
The reply before you linked to a thread about the HID service, and that solution did not work.
And no, I do not have the same problem when I am hooked up directly to the sound card. This leaves me to wonder if an optical cable can't control its volume output.
I really would like this to work because I am annoyed with not being able to use my convieniently located volume bar on my keyboard.
Edit: Oh, by the way, maybe I didn't make this clear: my keyboard does exactly as my mouse would do if you click on the volume button in the taskbar and move the large slider up and down.
Also, this may be important... this is what I see when I open my volume control:

If I press the mute button on the slider bar under the sound card, it mutes (but still no precise volume control). However, the slider under the headset (which displays a green bar when sound is playing) does not mute and there is still no precise volume control.
