Acer laptop randomly restarts

I have an acer laptop, model 6920g. The thing is, since a few months ago, it restarts itself radomly, or simply gets locked by itself, needing a manual restart. I've checked the temps, all normal, cleaned the dust from the sink and the fan. At first it seemed like an HDD problem, but the tests don't show any abnormality. Also considered a faulty RAM stick, checked them both, no problems whatsoever.

I've made a bit of searching and found out this problem is, at the very least, known for this problem, and no one seems to have a clear answer for it(i even got told to disable one of the cores, no effect). Has anoyne here dealt with this issue?
It's driving me mad, since the restarts are random between powering up and the first 10 minutes of use, meaning that that's the amount of time i have to do stuff before the dammed thing starts over again

Computer specs:

Acer aspire 6920g
CPU: Intel core 2 duo T5750 2.0Ghz
GPU: ATI mobility radeon 3650
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
RAM: 4GB, Samsung
HDD: 320GB

Also, note that this issue doesn't occur when working on safe mode, so i'd say it's a driver incompatibility, but i can't seem to find any conflicts through diagnosis tools.

Hmm. I'd suggest completely uninstalling all of your drivers, then reinstalling. (No matter what the diagnostic tools tell you.) Check to see what services are running - if it doesn't do it in safe mode, you may have something loading in either in services or startup that is causing the reboots somehow.

If you can do so, you could also try the old standby - "FDisk, format, reinstall" although these days I'm thinking the lyrics might have changed.

Thanks for the quick answer. The thing is, i've already formatted the drive several times with no effect, and the drivers are the ones at acer's homepage. I'll try removing them one by one anyhow.

And you've already run memtest for a long while?

If it was a desktop, I'd start poking the hardware more; but if it doesn't happen in safe mode, I'm still thinking software somehow. Most of which would be cleared up by wiping/reinstalling, unless there's some kind of virus hanging out in any personal files you're restoring from backups. How did you test the memory?

I have a similar problem, but it's random shutdown due to overheating. The fan doesn't cool well enough imho. Acer Aspire 5750G. CPU temp is like 80 or more when playing SC2, lol. Maybe I should check if there's dust near the fan.

Temps are fine(doble checked them, both gpu and cpu). Also cleaned the dust "just in case". About the virus, i scanned everything i backed up with malwarebytes on another computer, so they should be clean. The thing is, i have a friend with the same laptop that also restarts itself, so it should be hardware/driver problems.

The memory was tested through memtest, windows memory test and the "remove one of the sticks, see if it keeps restarting" test. All of them were negative, and the laptop restarts itself with either of the RAM sticks plugged in.

That's very strange. I had a problem like this with one of the computers where I work, but it turned out to be a motherboard problem due to bad capacitors - I was able to operate in Safe mode with the network cable unplugged for several hours before it finally froze again; but it was freezing not restarting. I'm left thinking motherboard or power supply; do you happen to have a spare power brick for the laptop you might be able to use? Or try it on the power supply without the battery, or on batter without the power brick connected.

Looking around, have you updated the BIOS firmware recently?

The power supply is quite new(it broke 3 months ago so i had to buy a new one, bought it from acer, so it's official). I updated the BIOS yesterday, thinking that might have been the problem. The update went well, but the problem has not subsided. Maybe the old power supply damaged de motherboard?

I saw somewhere that someone had this problem after updating their BIOS - not sure if that's the case here. It's possible there was some damage to the motherboard, but if so that's a real pain to diagnose unless you have access to a very expensive piece of testing equipment

Which i don't, so i'll have to wish for the best...Anyhow, i think the problem started a while after upgrading to windows 7 from vista, anyone heard of incompatibilities of acer drivers? Of course, i used the windows 7 ones, but you never know...

It sounds like a gpu problem more than anything, perhaps faulty memory on the gpu itself. The only reason I say that is because when windows boots into safe mode it doesn't load anything but an extremely basic video driver. This means the card itself won't load much into memory, so it can run fine in safe mode. It's also not really using much of anything the card offers. It sounds like once it loads into a bad address on the memory for the card it just crashes.

Have you tried getting rid of your video drivers and just using the basic one windows will install itself (not for games, but just for general use). You could also try disabling the cards ability to grab extra memory from your ram if it needs it, there could be a problem somewhere along that path causing a crash too.

In terms of repair, not really possible without a fairly large and probably not worth it expense so if you want to keep the laptop running the best solution is to figure out a workaround.

Indeed, the problem seemed to be in the GPU, more exactly the crappy catalyst driver that was installed(for some reason it didn't update properly it seems, which i found out a while ago while checking every driver). I disabled catalys and AMD external events service and so far it's been stable, so i'm guessing i'll have to reinstall the driver altogether.

Thanks for the answers, everyone!

i also have 6920g with ati mobility radeon 3650.it has been running win7 with no problems for 2 years, about 4 months ago it began restarting in game play, i added a new 2gb mem stick so now running 4 gb, problem continued, one day the charger refused to power up the machine, tried another power supply machine worked, put my charger back in it worked again, random restart continue maybe 1 every other day, after a month restarts became more frequent sometimes after 5mins sometimes after 2 hours, but would run fine and stable without ac connected untill battery drained and in safe mode with ac connected, was more stable with advance ac power settings mimicing battery settings, stripped machine, cleaned machine, applied new thermal paste, still unable to use with ac connected, tried to reinstall clean boot win7 outright refused to take itinstalled vista, totally stable no restart with ac connected ran for 4 days solid just wouldnt install any games kept .cab file erroring, upgraded vista to win7, restart reaccur,ac power began beeping, replaced ac power with new one. still restarting, run numerous monitors they are registering cpu gpu temp no more than 48, fan sounded a little noisy replaced it. still only run in safe mode /safe mode with networking or with ac disconnected. no bsod ever, just unexpected shutdown usual option, event view shows Event ID 89 Kernel-Power ACPI thermal zonefollowed by atikdag screen not responding twice. unexpected shutdown, in same order after every restart, ive tried new drivers ive tried disadling unused/unecessary drivers, tried new ati driver, tried updated catalyst from amd, have replaced optical drive now also next thought usb install win7, im confussed, it works without ac or with ac in safe mode could be motherboard ac power/charging circuit fault but the fact that it works in vista with all the acer vista drivers makes me think software, acer dont have drivers for win7 chipset ,ati. they all come from microsoft,
any one got any other thoughts ?

If your computer starts, during the boot up process, continuously tap F8 until you get the menu where you can choose safe mode. Using Win 7 (don't know about Vista) there's an option near the bottom for "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement". See if that helps at all.

I had the same problem with an Acer Aspire 5733. It would randomly crash & reboot, and it didn't seem to be related to CPU or GPU temperatures (I was using RealTemp to log them).

What solved it was to set the CPU usage to ~93%. Go much above that, and it reboots within ~10-300 minutes. Set to 92%, it hasn't rebooted at all.
