I was just wondering what's the difference between Windowed (Fullscreen) and normal Fullscreen. It looks exactly the same to me, except for the time it takes to Alt-Tab in and out. I've heard that Fullscreen runs the game faster, is it true? Also, I know in some tournaments they don't allow Windowed (Fullscreen) (I think it was either IEM or MLG). Anyone knows the reason why? I use windowed fullscreen because I have more than one monitor and the tab out time is really annoying. It also allows for streaming. If you run on fullscreen & stream, it basically shows up like a strobe light with the screen constantly flashing black | ||

When a game is truly full-screen, it doesn't have to play nice and share resources with other applications running; it has full, total control over what gets painted to the screen. This lets the graphics card cut some corners, increasing frame-rate. This is also what makes the tab-out time so long. To tab out of a full-screen game, the graphics card more or less needs to do a full reset and get all new data from the desktop on what to draw. If the game is windowed (or, in the case of "windowed fullscreen", in a window that just happens to occupy 100% of the screen), that data is already on hand. (Edited to add: Fullscreen mode is also the only way to run a full-screen game in a resolution that differs from the desktop resolution. This is less important now that most people use LCD monitors with a native resolution, but it was quite common for earlier 3D games to only support 640x480 or 800x600, regardless of desktop resolution.) | ||
