The native setting on the new monitor might be too blue if there's some kind of supposed sRGB mode that looks different. That's somewhat common. I'd switch it to sRGB regardless (or maybe some custom mode with similar end result). Also, in most home lighting conditions, the default brightness of most new monitors is far too high. You should probably be changing that anyway.

The old monitor has CFL backlighting that's probably dimmer and with a different color spectrum than it used to be. That's what happens over time.

I'm not sure about eye strain, but there's a lot of research with respect to blue light and sleep patterns. f.lux's page already has a lot, so I'll be lazy and link that:
http://justgetflux.com/research.html

Regardless, I don't see a reason not to use whatever looks comfortable unless you do color-sensitive work on the computer.

@Myrmidon

Taken from my question in simple q and simple a thread. Thanks for the help in advance

Budget would be under $200. I have plans on maybe buying one 2nd hand off a site like craigslist (obviously checking it as much as possible before buying)

Current uses: Watching streams, movies and gaming.

Rather not have ghosting or motion blur but if those are prevalent in sub $200 monitors then can't do anything about it.

How much is having a height-adjustable stand worth to you? Is portrait mode a plus?

Eh...would be nice but not needed...I'll use ghetto height stands (read: books) if needed.

How much do you notice TN color shifting? (for example, web pages that are a solid color looking a different color at the top than the bottom) How dark is the room you're going to be using? Some monitors have a relatively high minimum brightness that might be too bright in dark rooms without killing contrast by turning that down too to compensate.

Decently bright...but then again I've been in this room for years with same lighting...but I guess in contrast its dimmer than the average guy. I don't notice TN color shifting at all.

Ended up deciding between one of these 2 monitors:
AoC

or

HP

Getting them 2nd hand. The AoC one is being sold for $100 while the HP one was offered it to me for $70. Im not a big fan the fact that HP is glossy bothers me a bit.

They're both pretty generic.

If you don't want a glossy screen, get the AOC. Also, for what it's worth, the HP is an older CFL-backlit model. Who knows what that looks like now.

Looking to upgrade to a 27inch monitor with 2560x1440 resolution. Been eyeing the Dell U2713HM, not sure if it's worth spending extra hundreds on the U2713H though... I'm going to be using it mostly for gaming, with occasional photo editing.

Does anyone owns any of the above, or other brands with similar specs?

There pretty much aren't appreciable differences between the U2713HM and U2713H except the latter being more professional focused so (1) being more expensive, (2) supporting wide gamut and covering Adobe RGB instead of consumer standard sRGB, (3) having higher power consumption due to needing different backlighting to achieve wider gamut, (4) higher bit color internal processing, (5) I guess supporting some different inputs. Actually, most of those fall under consequences of (2). You can check the reviews yourself, for example on tftcentral.

I haven't used either of those particular models though.

Unless you do print work you probably don't need more than sRGB coverage. In fact, to get most things to look not oversaturated you'd be best off using U2713HM in sRGB emulation mode, which defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

Asus VG248QE vs BenQ XL2411T (rev2?)

pros/cons/differences?

Seems there's not much other choice

rev. 2 XL2411T just has non-PWM backlighting so no on-off flickers. With Lightboost strobing you're intentionally causing flickers. Some people can see these or are bothered by it, but most probably shouldn't be. With the old revision, minimum brightness on the XL2411T was still pretty bright. Not sure if that's changed.

The obvious thing for the VG248QE is if those DIY G-Sync kits ever surface... that said, at 144 Hz tearing shouldn't be as obvious. VG248QE has kind of messed-up gamma curves. Well, gamma is low and dark colors are consequently more distinguishable (the nonzero ones being brighter) than they should be, which might be an intentional move for gaming.

They should be pretty similar, so there's not much to say.

Aaa i'm really on the fence about buying

should i?

Would love to try one, but £275 is a lot of cash (~$450usd) that would require lots of stretching and definately cut into other part budgets

Edit: Grabbed an open-box VG248QE for £255 with good shipping & 1 month return warranty, getting paid 80 for my monitor. Hopefully turns out well.

Thanks for the comment

Hello, and Happy Holidays.

Budget -> say < $500

Resolution -> Probably 1920*1080. I'm not getting a 4k monitor, and probably not getting a 1440. I'm wondering if 24" monitor is better then 27".

Currently using a i5-4670 w/ r9 270x.

Games I'll play -> Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Left 4 Dead. Also for movies, and work. (Spreadsheets, text files.)

Location -> Canada, so Canada Computers, Tigerdirect, Best Buy, Future Shop, etc. I would like to avoid ordering it online.

Other -> I'd like a monitor where the text is sharp. I'm trying a 27" Benq (GW2750HM) and the text doesn't look good. Also, PWM bothers me, so I need to keep the brightness at 100%; however, I also don't want minimum brightest to be too bright. (The newest Benq that do not use PWM are not available here). Little to no ghosting would be prefered. If it matters, my last monitor was a 17" CRT Samsung 753DF, 1024*728 @ 85Hz. Text looked great. Anything comparable to that in 24"?

1920 x 1080 at 27" or higher just isn't very good. If you want a screen bigger than 24", you should definitely invest in higher res imo.

Well there's my first experience with buying something not sealed and brand new; I got a ve247h (i believe) in a vg248qe box with a vg248qe manual and plastic all over the monitor that said vg248qe

at least amazon apparently has decent coverage

Looking for a 27" monitor, anyone have thoughts on the Asus VE278H? I cant seem to find any real reviews.

Looking around that 300-350 range. Any other suggestions would be great. Will be used mostly for Sc2 Dota2 and few others. Dont care much for 3D, viewing angles or color clarity (im colorblind so most shades are lost on me).

I will also likely hook up my ps3 to it for gaming.

Thanks!

Got my actual vg248qe earlier, colors are indeed a bit weird (i used to run 95% background dim in osu on my old monitor.. with this one, 99% dim is brighter than that and details can still be easily made out, and i can't change it much with calibration) but performance difference is insane, i'm gonna try lightboost in a bit

Edit: Pretty damn insane. http://www.testufo.com/#test=photo&photo=quebec.jpg&pps=1440&pursuit=0 scrolling @1440px/second and looks clear as if it wasn't moving (if you eye track pics) which makes non lightboost even 120hz look terrible in comparison

Hey!

I'm looking for an IPS monitor. I'd like a 24", with great color fidelity (preferrably close to 100% sRGB), at least 1920x1080, for less than 250 euros. I'm considering a Dell 2412M. It is rather old though. Is there anything better out there? For the same price, with better color, better input lag, etc?
I'm price checking at http://www.tweakers.net/pricewatch as I'm in Holland.

Thanks a lot!
