I have Verizon FIOS currently for about around 4months and I'm loving it. But I'm moving places about 5mins away which is way closer to my high school ( apartment ). I was wondering if I could just disconnect the router and bring it in the new place and connect it. If the internet connects as I connect it, I wouldn't need to call in any technician and would save me some time.

My Question: If I just connect the router to the new place, will the internet come up? or do I have to get a tech to come in. I've already talked to the verizon guys and they told me to try and see if it works then call them. ( I'm moving tomorrow so I need some quick answers =d)

Also, if it doesn't work I'm planning to change the service to TimeWarners. Are they good for fast download and upload? I have 40mb download and 20mb upload on this Verizon FIOS and get it constantly in the speed test.

I have V-FiOS, so awesome!!! Switched from TimeWarner.

If your new place is already wired for FiOS then all you should need to do is call verizon and register your modem mac address and serial number with them for the new address. If its not wired yet then a tech will need to go out.

Most likely you'll need to call them up and get them to wire a new fios connection to your new place. Each individual building has to have a fios cable connected from outside.

Like he said, if it's already got the fiber optics installed, you should be good to go, but because last mile fiber optics is still somewhat new, you may need to get a technician in to wire it up first.

-place has to be pre-wired with fios.
-you're still going to have to call tech to drop by and activate the fios box that is probably sitting in your closet, they bring all their junk and computer and plug it into the box and do their thing, then tech sends the report back to their office to activate your network.

-I had time warner before switching to fios. Time warner speed is slower than fios obviously but its pretty consistence, disconnects and internet going out is not frequent but when there is bad weather you can expect your internet to be out for a little bit, but they are pretty quick at fixing things.

i switched to fios from twc and loving it. when i moved one block down when i was using tmc i still had to get new boxes/router for my new service

TWC is absolute trash. I've had FiOS since it became available in the city for over two years. Consistently having 35+MB Up/Down is unbeatable. But your priorities are your own.

the answer is no

if your new apartment is serviced by FiOS, it'll be via a MDU. that means you'll be using VDSL to connect to the MDU (you wouldn't really notice much difference for the usage) but the connection type is completely different than just a coax home-run straight from your modem to your ONT (which is likely what you have now)

on the bright side, if they have a MDU (or multiple MDUs) setup there, you shouldn't have any problem just plugging straight into the existing rj11 jacks and connecting (a tech will still have to come out and activate your shit no matter how you look at it)

and @ the people bashing time warner cable:
you don't know what you're talking about - the quality of your connection depends not only TWC's (or any other ISP) wiring to your home, but also your (yes, your) wiring inside of the house and all kinds of other crap

there are definitely areas with recurring issues for connection.. but that is few/far between and they try to get it taken care of ASAP
