Hi all, well I figured out what was causing my computer to just randomly shut down and have since taken precautions and preventative measures.
However, I have BitDefender and it is constantly detecting attempted port scans. Now even though I've got the damn thing toggled on "game mode" which is supposed to prevent it from interrupting my games, it will still minimize starcraft to inform me of these port scan attempts.
How safe would it be for me to just turn the whole thing off while I'm playing? I can't tell you how many times the damn thing minimizes right in the middle of crucial micro moments! Its absolutely killing me, literally.
Now I'm thinking of just going with Norton or McAfee (my fiance decided to get this Bitdefender program) but in the meanwhile this is what I've got. So I've got a multi part query for all you tech-savy idiot savants out there:
a) How does this antivirus program and firewall compare to others out there? Should I even bother going with some other software?
b) How risky is it for me to turn the software off (only while playing sc2) in order to avoid having my games interrupted?
c) For those who use BitDefender or are at least more familiar with it, is there some option in settings that I'm overlooking that will allow me to keep the program running without it minimizing Sc2 to tell me every hour or so that a port scan was attempted?
Many thanks

if you're looking for a good anti-virus, i love AVG. norton, in my opinion, is absolute shit and it slows your system down so bad because it takes over everything. i used to have norton for years and let me tell you, that shit took over all of my computers and it was a pain in the fucking ass to take off.
its a huge risk to turn off all anti-virus and firewall software when doing anything really... all it takes is that one time and you're in for some shit.
never used bit defender but like i said i've been an AVG fanboy for about 2 yrs now, it's awesome. even got it on my phone.

its only a huge risk if you're a complete moron tbh. all you really need is no-script and a brain really.. its that ez

K i'l keep it on then for the time being. I just hate the fact that it minimizes the game while its even been toggled to a specific setting designed to prevent such intrusions. Its like...WTF Bitdefender? Y u ruin micro battles for me??
As for AVG, I'll take a look into it and perhaps even just do a little more research on Bitdefender. I have scoured the options regarding what choices I have to prevent warnings from popping up and game mode seems to be the answer...and yet...still interrupting game!
As you can imagine its annoying as all shit.

avast! is a pretty good antivirus program as well, and when I set it to gaming mode, I have never had the problem where SC2 minimizes.

a) It's a good program, it's been high up in the rankings for this year. If you have bought it would be a waste to change it. b) If all you do is gaming then it's pretty low risk. Windows firewall might step in if you disable your software firewall anyway. c) I'm not familiar with bitdefender settings but considering how well renowned it is it would surprise me if there isn't any setting that allows you to choose what and how it notifies you. Or you have the security settings for your firewall set too high. You'd be better off to ask in the forums at bitdefenders official site though if none here have that knowledge.

Cool thanks for the input guys. Yeah Ive heard from a couple people now that the windows firewall should be adequate some I'm thinking that I will just disable the BD firewall whilst playing sc2 and turn it back on afterwards. It doesn't seem to be slowing my computer down but I have been getting some weird lag from time to time.
I'll just stop being so lazy and do some more research on the subject myself. If there are any particularly good resources out there for remedying these kinds of problems I'd appreciate being directed there.
Thanks again
