PSU making buzzing noise - normal?

hiturheartx 61 Posts August 13 2011 04:46 GMT #1 Is it normal for a PSU to make buzzing noises? it doesnt come from the fan, but not sure whats making the noise. it makes like a 'eeeee..eeeee.eeeee' sorta noise. its slightly audible because my psu is just beside me. using gtx 580 and corsair 650w psu. is this normal?

Myrmidon United States9452 Posts August 13 2011 04:52 GMT #2 If it's a Corsair unit it's probably not some really cheap capacitor on the way out and squealing, so it's probably coil whine. It's harmless other than the sound it makes. This is a common issue but not really normal. You can RMA it to get a replacement, which hopefully will not also have that problem. Pretty much those big toroidal copper thingies can mechanically expand/contract with certain currents at certain frequencies passing through, and this vibration causes the sound you hear. Next time specify if it's TX650, TX650-C, TX650 V2, HX650, or AX650, (yes it makes a difference) though that really doesn't matter in this case. edit: forgot TX650M

Amui Canada10567 Posts August 13 2011 05:19 GMT #4 That actually sounds like the fan is hitting something. Turn the PSU off and see if there's a stray wire and poke it out of the way with a long thin object.

Myrmidon United States9452 Posts August 13 2011 05:27 GMT #5 Hm yeah, that's definitely worth pursuing. Check the fan and poke around a bit first (with it off obviously...and don't open it up unless you want to void the warranty and potentially electrocute yourself).

semantics 10040 Posts August 13 2011 05:46 GMT #6 I've handled a few hx650's that made that sound at random times, and it would increase in volume with load, which could have meant the fan was reving up, each time i rma'ed it they never got back to me on what was the problem, but it common enough that it was easy to find a random youtube vid of what i thoguht he was hearing.

Womwomwom 5930 Posts August 13 2011 09:02 GMT #8 Its PSU roulette...you might fix the problem but no guarantees since its a pretty common occurance. I'm not sure about Corsair's RMA policy but if they're willing to pay delivery costs its probably worth a try if you actually find the noise annoying.
