Hey guys, I think that my processor is dead. When I turn on my computer it lights up and the fans start going but then 3 seconds later it just shuts off. I have a liquid cooling system on the CPU but I traveled and changed mobo's / cases a bit when I moved to florida and back to canada, I think that the cooling paste dried out or went bad or something and I took really bad care of it and it overheated too much? I don't know. I have 2 PSU's and 2 motherboards and I have the same issues no matter which combination of them that I use. My comp specs are
750w corsair PSU

( like I said I have 2 motherboards, I tried installing both of them and I still had the same problem )

I have 2 hdds that are on RAID, one of them is kinda messed up but they are working properly right now i'm 99% sure.

If my processor is indeed dead, what do you guys think that I should go for when buying a new one, will either motherboard support a i5-2500, I was thinking about getting that? I don't need an amazing processor I just want one that can stream SC2 :D

What do you mean it overheated too much? You're saying you know for 100% sure that it overheated way too much and you just kept running it?
Do you have access to another CPU possibly so you can try it out?
What do the LED/Beeps on your mobo show? Have you checked your mobo instruction manual to see if it's giving you another kind of error code?
Before you go buying another CPU, you should try to see if they are still under warranty. That way you don't have to pay for one if you don't have too.
Unless you're too lazy to any more troubleshooting / mess with it anymore. Then we can help suggest a new system.

i won the processor / mobo so i don't think they are under warranty :D
I am really bad at computers, I don't know anything about cpus/overheating/cooling systems so I dno, a couple months ago it was shutting off after being on for a few minutes, i went and bought some thermal paste and cleaned the old stuff off and then it started working again. I'm guessing if its dead then its because i fucked it up by letting it overheat.

umm theres a green light thats on it says " stby " next to it. the blue "hd led" light is flashing
a red light that says " PROCHOT CR2PR" is on now
and this thing next to the cpu / battery is alternating between the numbers 31 and 92

Drewbie try to make sure everything is inserted properly and that the motherboard is correctly screwed in. I had a problem exactly like this before and my computer would turn on for a couple of seconds and then shut off. When I screwed in one of the sockets on my motherboard I guess it shorted something out. So try taking the motherboard out and placing it outside of the case on like and then booting from there and see if it works like that .

Uh, I think that red light is saying Proc hot, as in Processor hot. Never dealt with this personally, but some places online indicate this issue is usually associated with heat/dead CPUs.
Do you know for sure you allowed it to overheat a good number of times? How do you know this?

well it shut off and I the thermal paste on the cpu was all dry and old and useless, and when i put new thermal paste on it it started working again

no i mean in the past thats what i did, thats why i think that i killed it by overheating, i tried that now and nothing happened

edit : also is it very hot where you are at the moment ? as the cpu temp will vary with the ambiant temp, so if its like over 100° ...

If you've tried multiple setups it's probably toast, time to grab a new one.
I wouldn't bother trying to narrow it down further unless you have friends that don't mind you swapping their proc in your gear, but even then it's probably toast and a waste of time/potential damage to their stuff.

Yeah, if you've allowed it to overheat that much before, and just kept ignoring it, it's probably toast.
If you have access to another CPU like yours try it and see if everything works. I'm pretty sure your CPU is dead. Use another CPU of the same socket as yours (1156). The link Rachnar put lists what different type of CPUs are 1156.
If you can't get access to one, RMA it and tell Intel you have tried two different PSUs and Motherboards. I have a feeling they will honor it unless you tell them you overclocked it a ridiculous amount using the stock heatsink or if you won it through some really shady or illegal contest.
Speaking of which, why did it overheat that bad that many times and where did you win it...?
You can't get any of the new Sandy Bridge processors since they're on a different socket. If you don't want to get a new motherboard, you can replace it with an i5-650 or i5-750. Even going with an i5-750, it'd make sense to just get an i5 2300/H61 for around the same price. Or higher than that if you need more power. I'm assuming since you fried an 875k your power requirements were hefty? For streaming, a 2500k would be nice, but that'd be an investment requiring a $220ish CPU and $110ish+ Mobo.

If I'm understanding correctly, you removed the CPU from the motherboard in Canada, put it in your suitcase, and put it in a new computer in Florida without putting new thermal paste?

Hmm.. Generally speaking, assuming the heatsink is even touching the CPU surface slightly, the CPU should throttle, not burn out as some heat will be conducted away. Was it throttling at all before it died? As in when you played, during late game would it suddenly lag without a mothership or something that would result for sure in lag? Also, how did the thermal paste feel. Was it like a thick syrup or was it crumbly like dried toothpaste?
One other thing I would try is taking off the CPU and looking at the pads underneath the CPU for damage/burn marks. I remember one of the problems with 1156 was that socket burnouts could occur with some overclocking and I'm not too sure how that turned out. If there's charred pads/some carbon residue, the processor's dead for sure.
Neither of the boards (They're both socket 1156) would support a 2500, (socket 1155)
As for an upgrade, I'm going to assume every part of your computer works and all you need is a motherboard to run 1155.
Looking at prices, there's literally no incentive to buy a 1156 processor since it'd be slower unless you want to blow more than it'd cost for socket 1155 CPU + motherboard

My first thought was the Power Supply Unit, but since you got two, i'm sure atleast one of them are working.
Check to see if you can get your hands on a processor of the socket, and then see if that works. If it does, it's your CPU.

The only other possibility I can think of is the pump in the coolit system is dead and the system doesn't have enough thermal mass to keep the CPU cool for a longer than 3 seconds? If you have the stock heatsink around, put it on and see if it'll boot?
Beyond that I think you're stuck getting a new CPU+mobo combo =/

If you're not going to overclock your processor you might as well save money and go with the i5-2400. Not a huge difference but it'll save you ~$15-20 or so.
They have Fry's in Canada right? They're new ad comes out today (new one every week or two), see if anything is uber cheap. They just had the i5-2400 for $149 for a while, no rebate necessary. They've already done the i7-2600k and i5-2500k's but you never know. Or you could find a cheap mobo maybe.

Drewbie, sounds more like your cooling has failed, and the mobo shuts down your computer when the cpu overheats.
You could open the case, and just take a look at if the cpu cooler seems to be slightly loose.
Also, it could be a PSU issue. Its typical for pcs to shut down if the power delivery is somehow not in line for the components. Did this happen after an overclock fail or after the lights went out at your home?

p.s you said u applied a new thermal paste. Did u reaserch how you have to put that thermal paste? i mean, very thin layer, like ultra thin. Some ppl aplly 2 much of it, making it a problem rather than a help.
even if your processor would be dead, i dont think it would shut down your pc. Most likely mobo is protecting the cpu from overheating (killing a cpu from overheating is actually dificult to do, even if you try it, but if you are positive you have killed it, you might try to repair it in the oven, baking it for 6 minutes a 200 ºC. Some ppl do that with their GPUs).
However, if possible, check other things first, and answer the questions so we might help better.
If possible, give a full information about your system.
All components, brands, longevity, regular ambient temps...
