As for a laptop for $1500, I don't know about high-DPI laptops like MBP Retina. I mean, if you're using Windows, the display scaling is better these days but still sucks. The thinner, newer Thinkpads aren't really like the old ones, but I'd also check out the T440s and maybe T540p (which come in many configuration options). Actually, what's the usage model going to be like? How much do weight, battery life, keyboard/trackpad quality, and so on matter? I'm assuming build quality is most important. What size are you looking for? I'm looking at the thinkpads right now. Weight doesn't matter that much unless it's super heavy. Battery life, I'd prefer to be greater than or equal to 4 hours of using the internet/that kind of stuff since I think I'll need the laptop for most of my classes (and because most of my classes look like they will all be in a row MWF). Keyboard and trackpad quality is not that important to me, but since I do plan on playing some games I'd like them to be usable. I'm mostly just going to use the computer to run software (and write software) for class, play some light-ish games like dwarf fortress, dota, and paradox games, and use the internet.

Do you already know what you'll be doing in Uni and what you'll do in CS? The possibility to be able to run OS X might be neat as an alternative to Linux. It's the last surviving commercial Unix-like OS for consumer notebooks and desktops. ![]()

It sounds like you can configure the laptop to boot up windows upon starting, which sounds nice. No, I'm not sure specifically beyond my major designations of CS + Math. I'm sure at some point I'll need to be able to work with compilers and operating systems at a non-trivial level (as in, I think I may need to make my own). AI classes are optional but I'll probably take at least one. I don't think I'll be doing anything crazy like protein modeling though.

First + Show Spoiler + Intel Core i5 2400 Asrock H67m Mushkin stilletto 2x4gb ram MSI Twin Frozr GTX560 TI Avermedia Live Gamer HD Windows 7 professional x64 WD caviar Black 650GB 7200 RPM Intel 120 GB SSD 300 series I recently formatted both my hard drives because I had decided they had gotten bloated. Reinstalled windows, downloaded drivers and stuff. Great. Whatever. Problem came when I tried to use my capture card with OBS. It wasn't showing up. Weird. Check device manager, and it shows theres something wrong with the PCI slot. Figured maybe I had forgotten or missed a driver or something for my mobo. Seemed weird because my GPU was working fine. Anyways, I went to the website, looked over the list and saw I hadn't done the intel management engine driver. I think I thought I didn't need it? Not sure. Being unsure, I decided to grab it. But it said I had to install the required BIOS. So I clicked the link, downloaded it, ran the program. It restarted my computer, and finished running from the bios. Then windows tried to boot. BSOD. Ok, so, BSOD as the windows logo jsut starts to fly in. At first I thought I had bricked my MOBO because the bios wouldn't come up or anything. Then for no apparent reason that started working, but windows would still BSOD when trying to load. I can't catch the error code because it just resets right away, and I cant stop that because I can't get into widows. I'm currently running a memory test to check is something got fried there coincidentally, but to be honest, everything looks in working condition.... So, my question is... does anyone know what I did and if its fixable?

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/automatic-restart-windows-7.htm If you can only get into command line safe mode you'll want these: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192806/en-us On May 30 2014 06:19 LordErebus wrote: How can i find out, if my graphics card died or issues are caused by driver errors (Nvidia Geforce 460gtx). Windows only tells me, the card is not working because of "a problem", it doesnt tell me whats causing the problem. (PC crashed while playing and after rebooting the screen is full of blinking lines - i guess the card is dead?) Well you can try booting into safe mode. If that works, you can change drivers there. Sounds more like a hardware issue at a glance.

Check device manager, and it shows theres something wrong with the PCI slot. To help troubleshoot at this point the device error code would be nice. If it's really got to do with the PCI slot you usually just put the card into a different slot and try again. My recommendation is to NEVER install the intel management engine on a private system as this provides remote access to your machine usually in a business environment. If you really installed a new BIOS you could get the latest BIOS for your motherboard from the ASRock site and flash that. If you only installed the ME-drivers have you tried using safe-mode to get into Windows? If it works uninstall ME in safe-mode. P.S. Maybe you should post this in a separate thread because neither is the question simple nor will the answer be.

I got "caution" reallocated sectors count: 5. Hmm. Well I knew the HDD was dying but it doesn't seem as bad as I thought it would be.

The ST at the start of the HDD's name... that stands for Seagate right (this is my desktop HDD)? + Show Spoiler + ![]() Seagate HDDs aren't as reliable as WD it seems. I also once dropped the laptop on a hard floor from 50cm.. that probably didn't help. The laptop was off at least.

Sometimes even shutdown or reset doesnt fix it and just today had to reset/shutdown it by force over 10 times to get it to work normaly.

Actually if it's only when idling then it's probably not overheating. If it's only when idling.. I'm thinking that it's a software problem. Could be wrong? Is it dusty inside, etc? I'm just throwing stuff out there but I'd probably try to post more details.

If you want to exclude power management problems you can turn it off in Windows i.e. set to max performance and see if your system continues to shut down by itself.
