http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/177 4850 benched, at higher resolutions, on some of the most demanding games ever, at high settings. If you can get 20 frames on Crysis at 1680x1050 with near maxes settings and AA, you can play MW2 on low at tiny screen rez.

All the ~$100 cards can handle many games on reasonable settings at 1080p. If you doubt us, just buy a GTX 460: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121390 or a GTX 560 Ti as an individual ignorantly suggested.

The 460 or 560 Ti would be a bit overkill as mentioned, so something around the $100 range is preferable, unless you have a killer cpu which will cause you to be bottlenecked by your gpu.

The GPU, as others have said: a hd4850 might be all you need for that low resolution.

They seems to be very out-of-par compare to others such as gtx460 or ati 5850. Again, this is my first time building so I dont know what I'm talking about. 1280x1024 is actually a low resolution by today's standards. 5770 and 4850 are very solid if not overkill for many modern games at that resolution. You could even get away with lower.

Both the 4850 and the 5670 are below Bad Company 2's recommended specs, BF3 will be much more GPU intensive. You'll also want DX11 support

For the record, these are reasons your suggestion is silly.

For the record, these are reasons your suggestion is silly. 1. 5770 is a great card for low resolutions and not much else 2. price/performance is more important than buying the cheapest card, a 4850 may be $20 less expensive or whatever but the 5770 is 20% more powerful 3. DX11 has alternative, less system intensive AA options and optimizations for texture streaming. BF3 will be the first game to make use of them 4. dur 5. dur 6. wrong

It's not the worst suggestion, but the 4850 will do fine for his needs. Point 3 I concede. Point 6, even if it's PC first, it's coming out on 360. If a 360 will play it, he doesn't need high end hardware.
