I want to know what video card I should buy to play games on my 1280 x 1024 screen . I want to be able to max out all the settings (AA, AF, etc. are not neccessary). I'm currently playing starcraft and will be looking to get diablo 3. Also, I want to be able to play mw3 or battlefield 3 when they come out(these shooting games do not need to be at maximum setting, just playable fps 40+). Any suggestion?

I don't mean to doubt our u guys' computer knowledge, but it's for sure that those graphic cards suggested above can handle mw3 or bf3 smoothly at 1280x1024. They seems to be very out-of-par compare to others such as gtx460 or ati 5850. Again, this is my first time building so I dont know what I'm talking about.

That isn't a high resolution, man.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/177

4850 benched, at higher resolutions, on some of the most demanding games ever, at high settings.

If you can get 20 frames on Crysis at 1680x1050 with near maxes settings and AA, you can play MW2 on low at tiny screen rez.

I would go for the 460/560/560Ti, depending on how much u are willing to spend

Still won't be an issue on lower settings, it's just another console port. Xbox 360 hardware hasn't gotten any better.

Btw don't buy the 4850 I listed, the GTX 260 is better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125380

All the ~$100 cards can handle many games on reasonable settings at 1080p. If you doubt us, just buy a GTX 460: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121390 or a GTX 560 Ti as an individual ignorantly suggested.

Yeah, the 460 and 560Ti are both rather overkill for what you actually asked for. And by "rather overkill" I mean "A shitload more than you asked for"

If you can wait, ask again when diablo 3/BF3/mw3 are closer to release. New cards will be out by then

The 5770 would handle well even above that resolution. The 460 or 560 Ti would be a bit overkill as mentioned, so something around the $100 range is preferable, unless you have a killer cpu which will cause you to be bottlenecked by your gpu.

He isn't running a 1920x1200 resolution, nor higher. Those graphics cards you stated above would be totally overkill for his current resolution.

What is your CPU? It will probably be a problem for SC2 especially.

The GPU, as others have said: a hd4850 might be all you need for that low resolution.

The 5670 is $60 and will play everything you want at high settings 40+ fps.

1280x1024 is actually a low resolution by today's standards. 5770 and 4850 are very solid if not overkill for many modern games at that resolution. You could even get away with lower.

Yep, I have an 5700er card and run the same resolution as you require. Works fine.

don't waste your money on anything cheaper than a 5770

Both the 4850 and the 5670 are below Bad Company 2's recommended specs, BF3 will be much more GPU intensive. You'll also want DX11 support

1: Low resolution.
2: Lower end budget system.
3: Not worried about high end graphics, includes DX11.
4: 5770 isn't powerful enough for good quality and DX11.
5: High DX support when playing low quality is pointless.
6: Console port.

For the record, these are reasons your suggestion is silly.

You don't really need to worry about MW3 tbh. BF3 maybe a bit more. MW3 is a console port. If it can run on an Xbox360, it'll run on any vaguely modern PC with everything on high.

i think the best price for that resolution should be 5670, its small, cheap and powerfull, you should be able to run sc2 maxed at that resolution with that card! it slike $60, so you wont spend much, but will get good performance!

1. 5770 is a great card for low resolutions and not much else
2. price/performance is more important than buying the cheapest card, a 4850 may be $20 less expensive or whatever but the 5770 is 20% more powerful
3. DX11 has alternative, less system intensive AA options and optimizations for texture streaming. BF3 will be the first game to make use of them

He wants a cheap option. It's not the worst suggestion, but the 4850 will do fine for his needs.

Point 3 I concede. Point 6, even if it's PC first, it's coming out on 360. If a 360 will play it, he doesn't need high end hardware.

I ordered an MSI Radeon 5670 this morning, DX11, GDDR5
supposedly it runs cool and can handle games pretty well
It has been going in and out of stock at newegg for a while.
