Microphone white noise issue.

Basically what is happening is I am getting this white noise with any analog microphone I plug in. USB ones actually work quite well and sound good but most headsets, including the new one I just got are analog and sound great in my x-fi sound card but the microphone is having this white noise issue. People can still hear me but it always sounds like there's a fan blaring behind me.

I have two sound cards on my computer, my x-fi and my on-board sound card and I get this white noise out of both of them.

Anyone know a solution to this?

Try turning off decibal boost in Windows sound settings. Also make sure the connections in your headset aren't the issue, try another mic since you've already tried multiple sound inputs those shouldn't be the issue unless both of them are broken.

I have it turned off, also I've tried using multiple analog mics on this computer and every one has the same issue. I'm not sure what's going on here...

Actually, when I hear the playback in my headset it sounds fine. ONly when using Ventrilo or other voice programs I hear the white noise.

Hmmm. Make sure you have up to date drivers, as well as making sure in your Ventrilo settings you're changing the volume in the hardware mixer and not in the amplifiers, they usually distort the hell out of your audio and you'll be much better off using the hardware mixer. If that still doesn't solve it I can try to help further.

On my specific case, i make youtube VODs with shoutcasts from SC2 matches. For quite a long time i had some static noise on the background, kinda like a constant "humming" that wasnt too loud to become annoying but noticeable if you pay attention to it.

This static noise was the result of me using the onboard sound card to process sound and only got rid of it when i bought an external soundcard and a new USB headset with mic. Since then no more static noise and apparently the sound is decent enough (not perfect but much better than before with no static background noises, so its progress on my book).

From what i gathered the onboard sound card is quite bad and basically gathers the static electricity of the motherboard and emits that "humming" sound (feel free to correct me my knowledge on this subject is close to zero) and by using an external sound card basically im taking the hardware away from all the static electricity of the motherboard hence the loss of any static noises / humming and a much "clean" final result.

Anyway, im not the best person to help on this subject just wanted to share my personal experience hoping it would be able to help you out. Peace.

If it's the onboard causing it you could try disabling your onboard audio in BIOS. Worth a shot!
