Every once in a while my SC2 will skip for about a second. Happens both online and in multiplayer. Very annoying when trying to micro. Pretty much makes the game unplayable.

My specs are:
Core 2 Duo E8400 @3GHZ
6GB RAM
ATI HD 5770 series
Windows 7 64-bit

It skips a little then at 0:26 is when it turns unplayable. I lost a whole control group a mutas in that 1 second before lol.

Please help! Thanks :D

This has just started happening to me about 2-3 days ago, and I admit, I am burning because of it, ive updated drivers and everything and have a 6950, so everything should be smooth as, but alas, it is not.

maybe it was the last patch?

This is not a PC issue its a internet connection thing.

Blizzard has a system where when your Internet is not keeping up with the upstream/downstream of the game it buffers you like this.

You can also try disabling all processes in Task Manager that are in use by your login. The only two that you really need to keep up are explorer.exe and taskmanager.

Same thing happens to me although skips are longer but not as often.

Core I7 920
2x GTX 285
6 GB Ram

HDD is fine (datatransfer rate seems to be normal). 60% free disc space on my Windows partition 35% on the SC2 partitition.

Just started happening about 1 week ago. All other games run just fine. Updated Graphicsdriver today. Didnt help. Since the FPS is so high I didnt even bother trying to lower graphics settings (running on medium). BTW the framerate stays at the former level during the freezes (just like in the vid of OP) - so there is no framerate drop.

If anybody had a suggestion how to solve this problem Id be so gratefull. Impossible to play the game atm =/

This has been happening to me as well occasionally, and it's certainly not due to any Internet problems on my end... Very frustrating.

Ive just reinstalled sc2...so going to give it another try.

I have a 6950 and the latest 11.4 drivers, this shouldnt be happening technically.

Few things you can try:
1. Check for any programs you installed that run on the background.
2. Defragment your hard disk. SC II is kind of heavy on hd use, and this may cause problems sometimes.
3. Try playing a single player game. Is the lag only in multiplayer or singleplayer?
If it's only multiplayer, it's probably a network issue. If it's in both, your pc is most likely the problem.
4. Try turning your graphical settings lower. If it helps, it means that something is running on the background, decreasing performance.
5. Test your internet connection. There is tons of sites where you can test the speed of your connection.

Just a few things I did when I had lag

1: Done before - no change
2: Didnt try that but since I still have a lotta free disk space and didnt move any big amounts of data before the problems started this is an unlikely reason.
3: Also happening in single player.
4: Did that no change.
5: Did that - 14900 up 1000 down and 32 ms ping (which is obv. all "good").

Graphic driver graphic driver graphic driver... that's the only driver people ever install. Get the damn chipset drivers. Your dxdiag must show no "driver: n/a" (very few exceptions here) at all before you are allowed to complain about stuff not working.

Plus: Overheating/dust; crappy WLAN; you or other people downloading over your connection.
All checked you say? Then you better check it again. And again. And again. Just the same with these thing as with the drivers. People always say they have them installed. And as soon as they finally post a dxdiag you see what was obvious the whole time: no damn drivers were installed.

Yeah cool - besides the fact that its highly unlikely that a problem just shows up after 4 months without any changes in system configuration I installed all drivers necessary. Most up to date versions available 4 month ago. In fact I didnt update chipset lan and sounddriver since then but theyre installed never the less.
Also I think that given a constant temperature of ~ 57°C for my graphicscards and about 44 for my CPU heat is not an issue. Further its gonna be hard to have a dust issue with a watercooling (besides I clean the radiator every time i refill the cooling).
If the issue was that trivial I wouldnt have had to ask for help.

Microstutters like this are largely related to HDD speed. win7 uses alot of HDD writes, have you tried putting sc2 onto a secondary drive?

defragmented HDD, no change, still get the skips, so damn hard to micro.

I dont have a secondary drive...but it shouldnt be my hdd speed.

Same for me;

FPS around 75~ and every like 5/10 minutes it just happens. Sometimes i even have to alt tab and retab in the game to make the freeze stop.

Q9550
GTX 295
8 GB ram
SSD drive for windows and 2x 1 TB HDD in RAID for starcraft

I can't for the life of me find where it is; as others here i updated drivers, reinstalled stuff n everything but so far no luck..

this happens to me all the time, its really does make micro impossible if it happens at the wrong time. i don't have the small stutters that you experience, but i get the 1-2 second ones that you saw at 0:26.
this happened to me throughout beta and every single version up until now where it still happens

(FIXED FOR ME, SEE SECOND EDIT)

Started happening to me after updating drivers as well 5850 here.

Edit: Tried installing 10.12 drivers rather than the 11 series with no luck. I have win7 64bit. I get exactly the same small stutters you showed in the youtube video. I'm going to rollback drivers further and see if any sneaky windows updates happened in the last couple of days that may have affected it.

(I tried the sound thing to no avail - seemed unlikely given it was smooth as you like prior to a couple of days ago and no, it didn't help me )

Edit 2: So I did that - I uninstalled drivers, used Driversweeper in safe mode to get rid of them, restarted (you can't use the catalyst installer in safe mode, some conflict with the C++ redist) and then installed Catalyst 10.6 which can be gotten here. 10.6 was an arbitrary choice, I just knew they'd been stable before.
I also removed and didn't reinstall the HDMI audio driver or the SDK driver from the package, just the display driver and the catalyst software. After a reboot, SC2 had gone back to normal without the stuttering.

Hope this helps, OP and anyone else having the same problem.

Hmm what would you guys call "normal" frame skipping?! Cuz lots of ppl kinda have this error

I have those frameskips like once a game or within a few game once (but always on first game first sek)
Not rly that anoying , but can be rly bad in micro intensive battles if it likes to happen at that point

Having the issue with low - extreme settings ... frames just drop at a random points to 0 then the game "catches up"

Amd x4 965 @3,65
4GB Ram
HD 5850 @ stock
Windows 7 64bit
All latest drivers

PS : Or is it just lag? o.O

I had this problem before I stopped playing a few months ago. It randomly started happening without any change in my computer hardware/software or connection. Tried the standard re-install drivers/game etc. but nothing worked.

Going to play a game and see if it's still happening.
No I'm never serious.

I just built a new PC last week and was having this problem from the get go. It was driving me mad since every other game I tried was working 100% fine. I tried everything, reinstalling windows, running sc2 on a different hdd, and nothing worked.

I finally figured it out last night, my ethernet drivers were out of date. Once I updated those the skipping stopped and now happens maybe once a game, but that happened on my old PC too.

There is a pretty long thread on the bnet forums about it too: http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/1126996964

Are u sure its that ?! Cuz for me it is actualy a drop of frames to close to 0 for a sek then it jumps back to normal on any settings ...

Or is it related to the lag of the internetz `?!
Windows said my network driver is on the newest version.

If your mobo is using Realtek for your network stuff, Windows said mine was the latest version too when I checked, but there is an updated version from January on the Realtek site.

That is definitely what fixed it for me. I spent all last week trying every different possible combination of things and it happened just like the video in the OP during every game until I updated those drivers.

If you think you have this problem, could you check something for me?

If you click on the single player tab, then play a game against AI - do you stutter?
If you then click on the multi player tab, and play a custom game against same AI, same map - do you stutter?

For me, I do not stutter at all when playing against AI in Single Player, but stutter regularly playing against AI in Multi Player.

Thanks for the tip about the network card, I was actually doing exactly that in between posts. I've had a look around on the bnet forums, it's cropping up quite a bit. I can only assume it's something network or internet related because of the above-mentioned singleplayer vs multipler difference.

So I've tried updating the drivers of the network card, setting power settings to always on, port forwarded - literally everything network related i can think of to no avail.

I'll continue to update with my experiences. If you find that the stuttering is in multi but not in single, let me know.

FWIW, I'm running Win7 64bit without SP1, a HD5850, i7 processor, 6gb ram, a ssd for windows driver and plenty of space on a 1tb HD where SC2 is installed.

Similar things happening to me as well and so far there seems to be no solutions. I've tried everything, everything you can imagine and it still persists but not all the time like yours, I normally get 5 minutes of ok time then screws up for like 30 seconds where it's unplayable and then it's ok again. At the beginning of release I didn't really have this problem.

Could you guys check to see if it happens to you in single player against the AI? Click the single player tab, then play against AI, then start a game on xel naga. If you get no frame skipping, do the same thing from the multiplayer tab and see if you get skipping there.

We might be able to narrow it down if we can be sure it's a network/internet issue.

Intermittently I have the same problem. Seems worse on some maps. It happens to me when I just play a game against Single Player AI completely offline. I can play Crysis at full resolution on highest settings, have no problems in other games. Just something to do with SC2.

Hi guys, I think i've had a fair bit of success - early days but I've played a couple of games without the problem, so feeling pretty good.

I went to the Intel website and downloaded the latest chipset drivers for my motherboard and the network card driver on the intel site (which is actually an earlier version than directly from realtek).

I installed both of those and things seem to be working much better.

http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/?iid=dc_iduu

Obviously won't help if you have an amd processor, but maybe there are updated chipset drivers for you guys too?

Hope this helps.

Hi Sinep - did you do as I suggested in the post above? Or otherwise updated network card/chipset drivers?

We've got a good way to diagnose this particular problem, it'd be nice to have a surefire solution as well.

I have a nvidia chipset and my drivers are up to date - However, I use a USB wireless reciever for my internet, I tried reinstalling it last night but no such luck. I'm also running vista -32bit; are you on W7?

I have a tournament coming up on saturday and my brother has offered me to buy his old computer off of him for cheap (mine is on it's last legs anyway) so I may just take over that instead and get W7 on it.

Eeek, I think that wideless receiver might be a problem if the issue is a network/internet issue (and given you have the single player/multi player difference I assume it is.) I would test your brother's pC before you buy it because if it's an internet issue a new PC might not help.

I am on Win7 64-bit.

My motherboard is an Asus P6T but the drivers from Asus were quite old, older than the ones from the intel site. If you have an intel processor you could still check and see if you can find your motherboard in the site above, or if it's an amd processor they might have something similar? I don't know. I don't have much experience with USB wireless recievers for the internet.

Are you able to circumvent the connection? Like do a cable connect to the modem directly, just to test? Or does your modem wirelessly connect to the net?

I don't think it's the wireless adapater that's the problem, both my brother and another roomate of mine use the exact same hardware and neither have problems with sc2. I could theoretically try a cable connect directly into my router, but I doubt it would help. My internet is otherwise very stabile and hiccup free :/

Mine used to do the same thing and i stopped using router(even wired in) and plugged straight in to modem.Cured it instantly.
Didnt effect any other games just sc2.....try that.

Troubleshooting is just slowly eliminating options. I'd definitely try it, and if it doesn't solve the issue that's one more thing you can cross off the list..

Also plagued by this problem. Just updated the network drivers and things got 10x worse. rolled back and now it's the usual stuttering every 5 mins or so
sometimes 1-2 seconds and sometimes 10 secs -_-

but anyways i definitely think it's a network issue for me at least as it only occurs in multiplayer

How long has it been since you guys formatted your pc's :O

Every 6 months dudes... love it or hate it its the best and only way to keep your pc running consistently.

You wouldn't skip going to mechanic if your car was misfiring. Bite the bullet and reformat and clean your fans. Rolling back drivers, and all that jazz is just a waste of time.

Eventually, I switched over to my brother's old computer (needed an upgrade anyway). only thing that I put in it from my old computer was my old harddrive (I did not use this to run starcraft on this new computer) and I STILL had this problem. Funny thing is that my brother ran this exact setup a few months ago and did not have the sc2 freezes.

Anyway, then I tried replacing my wireless reciever with a different model.
Bam. Solved. I get sometimes a VERY tiny frame skip but its almost unnoticeable now. Really weird, but I'm happy.

Mine used to do the same thing and i stopped using router(even wired in) and plugged straight in to modem.Cured it instantly.

I went to the Intel website and downloaded the latest chipset drivers for my motherboard and the network card driver on the intel site (which is actually an earlier version than directly from realtek).

I installed both of those and things seem to be working much better.

I finally figured it out last night, my ethernet drivers were out of date. Once I updated those the skipping stopped and now happens maybe once a game, but that happened on my old PC too.

Ok - so I think it's safe to say that if you are experiencing this stutter in multiplayer but not in singleplayer, it is a network issue of some kind. Your best bet is looking at your networking - either cutting out or replacing things like routers or wireless connections or updating drivers on anything internet or network related.

Hope this helps anyone still with the problem.
Fantasy will be the next big thing in SC2.

I have the same stuttering problem described here. It started to happen during the last few days. Both my PCs have the exact same problem, which would imply that its somehow connected to my network. I will take my laptop to a friend today and see if the problem remains or not. If not, then imho its definitly a network problem.

These type of momentary freezing problems are, from my experience, almost always related to network/internet connection issues.

We usually call this "Spikes" it is internet issue

try open CMD

type ping google.com -t or ping yahoo.com -t and see if u get any "request timed out" msg

or see if the numbers are stable

I'm having this problem too but its not network related because it happens offline and to other games too.
Any idea what is causing it?

hey guys I got a new (pci x1) network card and the problem doesn't occur nearly as often now. And when it does, it's only a second hiccup -or even less. also far in between

still happens but game is now very playable for me. try replacing your card and see if it works.

ok....i may have a solution for some of you guys here
it worked for me, some ppl in my team and some ppl from another forum too.
it does although not work for everyone...
i also have to add i wasn't the one who found it out! i just got told and it works for me after i changed it...
originally i got told to turn of the whole sound and it worked from there on fine but i wasn't really happy with that, as you can imagine.
here his op:
i had this lagspikes and stuff especially when i had apm-intensive moments or when the game had apm intensive phases.
checked my hardware, drivers, other software, space on harddisk, internet connection...EVERYTHING!
i also have to add that i had no problem before 1.3 came out...
what was new with 1.3 are the unit responses. they way their sound output works after a click got changed. the thing is that the more units (also buildings and stuff have a responses) you click, the more units respond and since 1.3 they start immediately with the new clicked one. the key here is that even though the response gets cut off as soon as you click another one but it still runs in the background. and with the way bnet works this effects not only the one who clicks the units but all in the game.
however the solution is as simple as the problem: uncheck the "unit response" in the sound options. should be the 2nd last point on the left side of the sound properties
.as i said, it doesn't work for everyone but it might help some ppl here. it's also not really an elegant way to solve it but hey..as long as it works

+ Show Spoiler [btw...is that really true?] +
"and with the way bnet works this effects not only the one who clicks the units but all in the game" - i still don't really believe that
