oh man I was waiting for this! Typical razer nvr sends me a notice when these things are on sale, only when a new product is a few mths from release..

Guess i'll order mine on backlog.

Tx for review!

Hope the lack of wrist rest won't be an issue.

No problem, hope i helped your selection!

Here's some descriptive information about the key switches. The key has a clear point where it gives you that tactile bump and the clicky sound. There's a little zone at both the top and bottom of that zone that does nothing, for example I can press the top of the key down ever so slightly and nothing happens.

Conversely after i press a key down to the bottom I can move the key up so its just right underneath the tactile/clicky point (on the other side of the top dead zone), and while in that tiny, tiny zone nothing will happen. The key needs to travel back past the tactile point to regain the ability to be tactile. The bottom zone below this dead zone will repeatedly spam the key being held.
Here's a visual of what I'm describing, hopefully you can get what i mean. I'm trying to describe it as best as i can!

The key becomes pressable again before the tactile feel, and clickiness are recoiled. So you can double click without receiving 2 tactile bumps and clicks, basically one tactile press and 1 linear press at the bottom of the key. To do this you needa bottom a key out, then lift it to the dead zone just beneath the tactile point and press it back to the bottom.

Now here's the HUGE problem with this. IF you DON'T reach that tiny little dead zone right beneath the tactile point (ie. your still in the spam zone) and you press the key back down and then release the key back up completely only 1 press will register.

This can only happen by accident if your spamming the key without removing your finger from the key. If you spam like moon( Moon Spamming keys ) then there's absolutely no chance for a key not to register twice, because the keys are fulling released before pressed again.

I really hope this helped, I spent almost an hour trying to get to the bottom of these keys!

No problem! I don't think the wrist rest will be an issue. Before i got the Blackwidow i had the same concern but I got used to it really fast and now have absolutely no comfort issue's. As for reaching the keys, you have to bend your hand just a littleeee bit more :O

Its loud enough to be annoying, so if your roomates are bothered easily I wouldn't buy it

Keyboard looks nice but blue switches drive me up the wall. Though more expensive, i decided to buy Filco Majestouch with Cherry Browns. Hopefully i'll get it by tomorrow (fingers crossed).

If you're getting this because you want a mechanical keyboard with Blue Cherry MX Switches, then get the IOne Scorpius M10 (it maybe rebranded by different companies depending on your location). It features a USB connection with a PS/2 adapter. It's also about half the price of the Black Widow retailing for around ~$60.

I'm not a big fan of blue switches, but how is the quality of that keyboard compared to the other razer keyboards? Razer has a really bad reputation for their crappy keyboards, but if this one is on par with steelseries and filco, I might try it out.

Are blue switches cheaper to produce compared to brown or black switches? If so, that might be one of the reason Razer decided on the blues? If not, then the probably opted for the blues because of the noise, signifying to their customers(most are non keyboard experts) that there is indeed a difference between this new mech keyboard and their previous ones. If Razer's blue switches are the same as Filco's blue switches, then Filco isn't going to sell anymore keyboards...(assuming that the Razer one is equally as fundamentally sound.)

Razer isn't producing its own switches and neither is Filco. They get them from Cherry. I'm almost sure that they didn't choose blues for their price. Blue switches are basically the same exact parts as browns just with a added mechanism to create a click. Filco will probably do less business with gamers, but the core keyboard enthusiast's are still going to invest in Filco, as it is the most trusted, and looked upon keyboard on the market.

Well, you're looking at razer's $80 vs filco's $109 for the same keys(assuming they are). Is there a reason razer can sell them for so much cheaper; assuming that razer likes maximum profit? Also, razer has macro keys which is a nice addition for gamers and certainly doesn't take away from the keyboard. Can it still be justified to get a filco?

Yeah they are the same keys

Well man I can't tell you how, or why Razer is producing the keyboard for $80 since I'm not affiliated with Razer, and have no idea what their business plan for mechanical keyboards is. However i can attest to its performance, and quality. As far as Filco I've never owned a keyboard from them, but I've read countless reviews saying they are the best keyboard. Its up to the individual to weigh out the options and choose for themselves. For me, i elected to go with the gaming oriented cheaper Razer. It was much more of a risk to buy over a well received Filco, but in the end the benefits out weighed the risks for me. A lot of people are buying Filco keyboards though, everyone has their reasons

I've owned a Razer keyboard previously (Lycosa Mirror, $93) and if that is anything to go by the Black Widow is made by the same cheap feeling plastic. Sure the key switches are mechanical now but that is not all that makes a great keyboard...

I now own a Filco 104 with Cherry MX Browns and the thing is just built like a truck, it feels like a solid piece of machinery. The entire keyboard is backed by a solid metal plate so it doesn't flex or slide around your desk. Filco keyboards just ooze quality from any angle you take, they don't rely on poorly painted keys with backlights. They don't rely on glossy plastic - which was the worst thing about the Lycosa and I can't believe it's back. Razer gear is just cheap and nasty, it is all marketing and gimmicks.

If I sound like I am hating on Razer then you're spot on. I'm still pissed off at wasting $250+ AUD on:

- A crappy keyboard where the touch screen died 2 months after I bought it which meant I could not turn the backlight off and had to unplug it at night (quality and convenience++)

- An awful mouse that jumped everywhere because the firmware had a bug which apparently still hasn't been fixed, I don't really care because I donated it to a charity bin ages ago.

- A mousepad where the top layer of fabric wore out and started shitting black clumps of rubber all over my desk that cost FORTY THREE DOLLARS. I've had 25 cent made in china mouse pads last longer and work better.

"By gamers for gamers" is an absolute joke, Razer is cheap plastic trash rebadged and marketed to hell and back, there is nothing more to it. The worst part is I fell for the retarded marketing. At least I've learned my lesson but I still feel like an idiot even now.

Not all gamer targeted products are awful, the steelseries mousepad I currently have is excellent. I haven't tried their other products though and to be honest I probably won't now.

@Vek - You are spot on with Razer's quality. Their quality is so damn hit and miss. It's absolutely ridiculous. I just bought a Razer Lycosa less than a week ago and this piece of crap is already starting to bug out on me. The top right keys that control the lighting and media settings constantly go crazy and press themselves. Imagine how pissed I was when Windows Media player kept popping up out of nowhere constantly and I couldn't pin point the problem. It took me an hour of frustration to realize that my keyboard's media keys were being pressed on their own by a buggy keyboard. Luckily, Amazon's return policy is awesome and I am allowed to return it for a full refund.

I'm giving Razer one more try with this Keyboard though. I was just about to order a Logitech G110, but I figured for $10, I might as well try a mechanical keyboard and the Razer is about 1" smaller as well which is a plus. This is the last time I'm giving Razer a chance though. If they fail me this time, then I'm done with them.

Aside from Razer's apparent QC issues, there are plenty of other features (or anti-features) of other mechanical keyboards (e.g. Filco, Steelseries, etc.) that might override the Black Widow's price advantage:

1) The Black Widow is not full NKRO or even 6KRO, Filcos are available with full NKRO (6KRO with USB). For example, you can't hold Control, A and Q simultaneously on a Black Widow, which might be a factor in FPS games (won't matter in RTS games).

2) Some people won't like the glossy finish or other aesthetic qualities of the Razer keyboards.

3) They might not like the feel of the sticky, rubberized keys on the Razer (I prefer a low-friction feel).

4) They might prefer the more compact, desk-space-saving bezel on a Filco.

5) They might not care about the extra macro keys (which you can't even use in a tournament) and would prefer a more compact layout, or a tenkeyless layout

6) They might prefer brown or black switches over blue - Filcos are available with any of the three, Steelseries comes with black.

7) They might prefer a different layout, e.g. two-row enter key on the Steelseries, or a European or Asian layout.

8) The red Esc key might make them feel like a baller.

So I hardly think that there isn't enough room in the mechanical keyboard market for several brands.

Ya but NKRO is available for a steeper price. Does that basic filco have even 6KRO?

The basic Filco ($109) is 2KRO, but so are both versions ($80 and $130) of the Black Widow. The Black Widow is gaming optimized (poor-man's NKRO), so it has less blocking in the WASD area, but not elsewhere on the keyboard. The NKRO Filcos are $134 for the 104-key and $125 for tenkeyless.

If you are getting blue switches I don't see any reason to get anything other than the RK 9000, full nkro costar board for $85 is killer

They're very very similar and may well be made at the same fab. The Rosewill is $85 (or sometimes cheaper) when it's on sale or in certain combos or with coupons or whatever. It would probably be my choice if I wanted an NKRO cherry blue board with a 104-key layout. At that price I don't think it can be beat.

Some people really hate the logo for some reason, but I have a few of their external HD enclosures, and I think they look sharp. It also doesn't ship with a PS/2 adapter or a red esc key, and the printing and finish on the keycaps is different (maybe not as nice). Almost everything else about the two keyboards is identical.
