Hey guys,
I started some gaming websites in the recent past and like them to be as intuitive and easy as they can get. (sc2sig.com and sc2divisions.com) Sometimes with new projects i reach the point where i see that some kind of registration/authentication to the site is required. My problem now is, that i don't want you to have to register yet again.
As a technical person i know authentication services like OpenID, Facebook Connect, Twitter OAuth, ... - but i'd like to know what a normal gamer (you!) uses or would like to use.
This will influence some of my existing and upcoming projects, so please vote and comment.
Which authentication type would you prefer for a new (gaming-)website? - Facebook Connect/OAuth (requires Facebook account) - OpenID (requires openid server or account somewhere. - you may already have an openid) - Twitter OAuth (requires Twitter account) - Per-Site-Registration (yet another username and password to remind) - I would like to use a good central authentication system for gamers if there was one - I know a good central authentication system for gamers and will put a link into my comment

Personally i love OpenID and even teamliquid.net could provide openid service, so you could check in to other webpages with your teamliquid account, but i think openid in general is "too complex" or "too technical".

its really not that hard to register for a new site. its much better than forcing people to use facebok or another service that most people have not heard of.

Good point, trust is a very important and sensitive topic.

OpenID for sure.. how is it too complex or too technical? It's basically the same thing as logging in to your gmail(or whatever service).

Call me old fashion but I like signing up to websites.

Honestly I'm not sure if I understand all the choices... but in general I don't like the idea of a centralized registration system. I generally like to keep my accounts for different websites/services/games unlinked.

I am this close to closing my Facebook account due to privacy bullshit. I do not support a Big Brother single signon situation. You will pry what little Internet privacy I have left from my cold dead fingers.

I'm trying to avoid registering with facebook for as long as I possibly can, so I personally would prefer a non-social network system, ofc this is just my personal preference, since you cannot really argue that facebook doesn't have a successful business model.
gl with your sites

Thank you for your votes and opinions.
Seems that i had a wrong impression so far and you don't mind registering to a new site at all. I also read in your answers that you have privacy/"big brother" concerns with big central authentication services so i may include the possibility to optionally use openid at a later stage.

Set up your database server to accept connections from all of your sites and use a global user database.
Done.

I see no difficulty in remembering another pass/user name, seems the best option

I would much rather have the option of using a different ID for different sites and would not even consider getting a facebook account just to sign into something else.

I don't want Facebook to have to do with ANYTHING else. It sucks balls when I have to regulate everything I do because of it.

If you use single sign on and someone hacks your account you're so fucked. Think of all these steam accounts hacked
|
^^ Well if someone hacks your e-mail and you only have one e-mail and handle the hacker is going to be able to reset ur password in 2 seconds anyways...
I think it's soooo convinient when I can just link to my facebook account and be registered in 2 seconds. I hate signing up for stuff (I've been lurking TL since forever and signed up not even a month ago) and a lot of times when I want to use something that needs me to register I just don't.

Please don't let facebook into anything else.
Per site.
