First thing you need is a crosslinked ethernet cable, a regular one (which you can connect to a router) won't work if i remember correctly. Then you have to make sure the first part of the ip addresses match. For instance you set the address as 192.168.1.1 and your friend 192.168.1.2 This should enable you to play.

![]() I never really did the ethernet connect thing, I always just set up a adhoc network. So anyone with wireless could join, was a lot of fun ![]()

If you both have firewire (IEEE 1394), you can connect two computers over a firewire network interface, otherwise, you don't really have a lot of options other than a second ethernet cable and a switch/router, wireless, or a cross-over cable.

You can actually create one yourself from an ethernet cable. Check out this guide: http://www.archonmagnus.com/mods/crossOverCable/xOverCable.php I'm pretty sure if he had a crimp tool, and some RJ-45 heads, he wouldn't be here trying to figure out how to do it with only one cable.

Edit: Or just buy/acquire for free a crossover cable and use these settings: Computer A: IP 6.6.6.6 Gateway: 9.9.9.9 DNS: 9.9.9.9 Computer B: IP 9.9.9.9 Gateway: 6.6.6.6 DNS: 6.6.6.6

The following was about IPX, ignore that it does not seem to work properly anymore on moder nwindows versions. + Show Spoiler + I am not sure if windows XP still installs the IPX protocol by default (can anyone clarify?) and if the windows version of BW still supports IPX. If it does, you can use that and save yourself the work to set up TCP/IP. To set up TCP/IP use the following settings: IP: 192.168.0.1 on one computer, 192.168.0.2 on the other Netmask: 255.255.255.0 on both Dont bother to set up the default gateway or DNS, you won't need it. When you tear the network down and go back to your regular setup, remember to reset it to "automatically".

I think you mean DHCP server. Either way it doesn't matter because if he's connecting both computers directly there's no way he is getting his IP configuration dynamically. If your IP configuration is set to DHCP and you plug the computers in directly they'll just set themselves to a local(127.0.0.1) IP. You need to set them manually.
