Finally, I've decided to build a new computer.

What is your budget?

I'm not set on this, but I'm going to go for the most 'bang for the buck' that satisfy my requirements unless it becomes too expensive, which is unlikely. I'll go as high as ~$1200 for now for the rig alone.

What is your resolution?

I currently have a 1600x900 monitor, and I will look to buy a second monitor to use as a primary one. Later on I'll upgrade the current monitor I have probably.

What are you using it for?

I'll be gaming and streaming, and I want to be able to stream at high if not the quality I see it. My upload can probably handle it. I suppose I might encode videos, but unlikely going to really do anything intensive beyond gaming/streaming until I upgrade.

What is your upgrade cycle?

I'll say 2 years for now. I would basically want to snag up on deals as time goes on and upgrade continually.

When do you plan on building it?

I would like to buy my parts soon, say within two weeks. I've heard something is coming out soon (yeah real specific!) so if there are any drastic price changes, I'll wait.

Do you plan on overclocking?

This I am not so sure. I am quite computer-noob. I need advice here.

Do you need an Operating System?

I would need one but I have access to discounted ones through university or acquire it otherwise.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

I don't think this will be needed.

Where are you buying your parts from?

I do have a Fry's nearby that I can access nearly all the time; Microcenter is a bit far but I suppose I can go there once if I wanted any deals.

Other notes:

Games I'll be playing: BW, SCII, LoL, Dota2, and possibly GW2 + other games, which I haven't touched for some time. If there are interesting titles that come out, I'll be willing to play them, so I would like for those games to be able to run at least in medium setting, preferably high/highest + possibly stream them as well.

I want a SSD to boot OS from and to have games that I play the most on it. Then probably 1-3 traditional HD to cover my storage needs. I do like to store data a LOT so I'll want a healthy amount, let's say 5 TB for safety. Using them in RAID configuration increases speed right? So I'll be getting 2-3 internal HD. I currently have a 2TB Seagate external. However I heard that sata speed > usb speed so is there a way to make one of the HD external while still using sata so I can quickly transfer large amount of data if needed?

As stated earlier, a monitor, and possibly two if I get a good deal. Not sure how big I want it though, although I suppose it may be time to move on from 17 and 19 inch monitors? (I still have a 22inch CRT in storage far away though, lol).

Currently I have a Antec900 with following parts: e6750@2.66, 2x1gb ddr2 800, 8800GTS. I found the case to be a bit clunky to carry around though. I wouldn't mind using the same case, but if possible, use a smaller case. And if there are good ways to carry the desktop around (like a specialized bag with cushions that fits desktop + peripheries perhaps) that isn't exorbitantly priced I'll get one.

I do want a pair of speakers, if anyone has a good recommendation for a bang-for-buck ones please do so.

I also keep a ridiculous amount of tabs (20-60) open while browsing internet, which is a habit I'm going to fix eventually, but probably going to continue on for a while.

I want to keep using my keyboard that uses a ps2 connector (dt-35). There is a ps2->USB adaptor right? Or will I have to ditch this =[

I have limited experience assembling computers, basically watched someone assemble my old computer somewhat. But I should have help. I'll update on this for a later. Worst situation I'll ask friend of a friend for dinner or something.

Thanks for all the help, it's very appreciated.

So final build:

Intel Core i5 2500k @ $200

Samsung 830 128GB @ $170
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147163

Promotion ended but Intel's SSD price rose =\

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB @ $140 x2 = $280
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284

Price increased on this past few days. Skyr linked it to be $120 apiece before. Guess HD price are fluctuating constantly.

Antec 300 @ 60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042

Decided to stick to Antec because I liked the design of 900 and 300 is smaller so easier to carry around.

Coolermaster Hyper 212+ @ $23
http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=41337&promoid=1361

Any suggestions before I purchase?

You can get the Intel 520 for $165 like I said earlier: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=67710&promoid=1211 It's better than the Samsung 830.

Capstone 550 is better than FSP Aurum: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182068

Seagate Barracuda can be had for $100: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840 or Samsung Spinpoint can be had for $120: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 The Caviar Black was only suggested due to the price. Another Caviar Black is available for $125: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136786

FSP Aurum is pretty much $50-60 PSU quality but with 80 plus gold efficiency levels so you save a marginal amount of power over something else. It's not even that quiet despite the efficiency. I would go with the superior Rosewill Capstone or OCZ ZS if you catch all these promo code / gift card / mail-in rebate deals:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182068
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341047

For data hard drive, no need to get two. That kind of money just for the warranty on a Caviar Black isn't worth it. Just get another backup drive instead. Barracuda Green 2TB is $120, about the same price as the 1TB drives anyway:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148681

Crucial M4 is $10 less but tbh I think the Samsung 830 is a fine choice. edit: I didn't even check the 520 deal but that's still going, whoops

Instead of the obsolete Antec 300, get the One instead:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129181

Though if you want a smaller size, you can shrink the height and length both a few inches by going microATX. Silverstone PS07 is not that much more expensive and will have better cooling on top of positive pressure and easy-to-remove dust filters on the intakes.

Good to know, saving 30 bucks by going with the Hyper 212 EVO over the H60 means I can put that savings into another part.

Will the height on the 212 run into any problems on those mid cases closing? I don't mind blocking the ram, I can just get low profile ram.

A Hyper 212 is tiny, practically every mid-tower you purchase on Newegg will fit it.

I think hyper 212+ also doesnt work with motherboards that have the RAM slots on both sides of the CPU.

Also when i was inserting mine, the edge of the fan came to exactly the ram slot, the ram shroud had to either be removed or the stick itself would be forever pressured.

why do you guys always recommend superflower psus when they cheat with the 80plus certifications in order to reach platinum and titanium? The aurum isnt even worse than zs or capstone like you say, and reviews vary a lot when they talk about the noise levels.

Uh, isn't it only server and LGA2011 boards with DIMM slots on both sides? You probably wouldn't want a Hyper 212 anyways in either case.

And a Hyper 212 shouldn't pressure memory modules at all, unless you're talking about those with tall heatspreaders such as Vengeance.

Who cares if they cheat, its cheap and work well enough for the price.

If I had to shoot every monitor manufacturer that lied, I'd probably end up with Eizo alone and even that's very debatable. The computer industry is built on misinformation, what is new.

I don't really see your point since FSP cheats as well lol and Capstone isn't even 80PLUS Platinum.

Ah okay, so I will go with the 212 then. According to reviews it cools the 2500k pretty well. A lot of reviews say how big it is so that is why I asked here - Can never trust the Newegg reviews..

If you have mineral hacks, the 3960x is better with a possibly slightly higher premium, there really is no reason to get the 990x unless you already have a high-end lga1366 motherboard.

The motherboard you get really depends on your uses, if we don't know what you are doing with it, then we can't suggest anything. Things to consider in a motherboard:
- How many sticks of RAM?
- What graphical solution are you using? Single card, or 2, 3 or even four cards?
- Intended overclocking potential, if you're going to the multiplier wall of the 3960x, you're gonna need a motherboard with good vrms and phase states.

And finally, what are you even using this computer for? A lot of people waste money on really good systems they never even utilise fully. The only reason to really go with a SB-E chip is for a professional workstation, or professional level encoding/streaming/graphics work. Or if you want to do quad-sli/cfx to raise your epeen benchmark.

Neither processor. Do more research about the differences between the processors & what mobo platform can run the processors. I suggest doing a search at the Intel website.

So the hard drive on my old pre-built is dying and I think it's time to get a new computer. Salvagable from the old computer: optical drive, GPU

*NOTE* As I'm fairly sure the problem is the HDD, should I simply buy a HDD now and push off the upgrade until I really need it? The current computer has a Q8200 2.33 GHz core 2 quad with a GT 240 and plays SC2 on meduim at acceptable fps.

What is your budget?

<$500 not including monitor, OS, or any peripherals

What is your resolution?

1680*1050

What are you using it for?

SC2, maybe D3, word processing, internet browsing

What is your upgrade cycle?

2+ years, with option to add GPU, SSD in the coming year

When do you plan on building it?

ASAP, the current computer is beginning to freeze more frequently every day.

Do you plan on overclocking?

Not unless a k-suffix cpu is in the budget (doubtful)

Do you need an Operating System?

no, I get this from school

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

no

Where are you buying your parts from?

Newegg.com, Microcenter, and other place. I live in CO

Is this HDD a good deal? It's hard for me to tell since prices went haywire some months ago. F3 500 GB $80

Well if you're satisfied with the performance you're getting and you think the problem is your HDD than just buy a new HDD. If it's not the problem than you have extra storage than you can carry forward.

$80 for a Spinpoint F3 is good for Newegg, $85 is about your average pricing on Newegg for your typical 7200 RPM 500GB HDD. Seagate Barracudas can be found for less at other retailers.

If you haven't learnt in life that very cheap things are generally very bad, I don't know what to say. Its awful. Its Android, its got a resistive touch screen, and its made by god knows who so probably half the features don't actually work. The combination of the three suggests it has to be bad at whatever its trying to do.

I was always under the impression that raising red flags was supposed to be a warning sign. So why would you even consider a "red flag deal"?

If you're going to buy a tablet, I suggest doing it right. Portable hardware that's cheap tends to be terrible, and terrible portable hardware is an utter nightmare.
