Combo deals suck. They exist to suck poor people like you into wasting money on slow moving stock (which are slow moving because they suck).
Edit: The combo deal + PSU is around $400. For that you can buy a Antec NSK3480, 4GB of memory, a i3 2100, a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive, and ASRock H61M-VS that wipes the floor with any current AMD builds. It doesn't even need a beefy PSU because the power draw of the i3 2100 is extremely low and can use the 380W Earthwatts that comes with the Antec case.

Where would one sell a desktop? I'm getting rid of mine, and it's pretty fresh (4-5 months?) whoever wants i5 2400 with GTS 450 and proper everything can just PM, all parts probably still have manufacturer warranty. I'm thinking 550$ is fair? Might be a bitch to deliver, no idea how much would the shipping of that be.
P.S. Not trying to be laughed at, just thought that maybe someone wants similar specs that our gurus do here but don't want to go through assembling it or w/e, I listed it on craiglist at 720$ lol (which obviously is bs price )

ASUS 24.1" PA246Q, 1920x1200, 16:10, P-IPS, 6ms, what about this one?
Nah your old monitor is good. 120hz means your 580 is at least justifiable. No idea why you bought such an over the top motherboard though. A motherboard thats at most half of the cost would have given you the same benefit and thats money you could have spent on something else. Other minor things too but meh.
Thats it though. I think anyway. 120 hz monitors are really fucking nice IMO.
You have to remember dual 590's call for an entire different setup because its a diff price class entirely.

Shipping large desktops is always a problem because of the heavy GPU and (sometimes) CPU cooler. If you had the original case and GPU packaging, it would be fairly simple: take the GPU out, put it back into the GPU box, dump the PC case into original packing foam and box, and deliver. If you want to be really careful, put bubble wrap everywhere.

Does anyone have a comment about the i7-2600S? It feels nice to go a little enviro friendly, but will I be losing processing power as well? More importantly, is it worth the money for the little bit that it saves?

Yes you will lose processing power because the turbo boost and clock speeds are lower. Really though, there isn't much point in getting Intel's S series processors unless you are seriously space constrained.
If you want to be green and environmentally friendly (this is a good thing), just leave all of the power management features and C States on.

I am ordering parts for a full build from NCIX.ca and I am curious if its worth it to spend the extra 50$ for the assembly and testing before shipping.
I ask for 2 reasons
1) I am not comfortable assembling a CPU/aftermarket heatsink or a computer in general, while I know where all the parts go and how to install them I am just not really comfortable with it. I have worked in a computer repair shop before and can do the parts individually but like I said, I am just really not comfortable doing it on my own in my house.
2) It gets the OS installed and tests the parts ahead of time to prevent DOA parts. I have read that they don't update bios though so I would have to do that.
Seems for 50$ its worth it, you also get a year warranty.

You normally don't need to update the BIOS unless there's something wrong with the motherboard. $50 is a pretty small price to pay and if you don't want to do it, I say let them do it.

Hey, through stupidity, I fried my motherboard, and am currently looking for one to ask for for Christmas. I have very little to no idea what I should be looking for, so I was hoping one of you fine people could point me in the correct direction. What I am assuming is important as far as searching for motherboards goes is CPU and RAM types.
I only have DDR3 ram atm and my CPU is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103921.
I have no idea where to start looking, other than at most $150 cost-wise.

Pretty much any AM3 motherboard like this.

@esoteric: your reasons sound perfect tpay the $50 to install. I don't see a problem with it at all.

So I started building the computer that you guys recommended and came across an issue. When I press the power button on the case the computer turns on for about 2 seconds (the fans start to spin) and then it turns off. I removed everything and found that if I connect the motherboard and power supply, I can get the case fan to spin indefinitely. However, once I drop in the CPU it does the turn on for 2 seconds thing. I noticed on the mobo that there is 1 pin that is broken/bent. Could this be the cause of my problem?

Very likely. Get Newegg to replace it. If they offer a refund, get rid of the Biostar motherboard while you are at it.

how does a i7-26xxQM (laptop CPU) compare to a i5-2400?
|
On December 04 2011 00:01 Nate.F wrote: how does a i7-26xxQM (laptop CPU) compare to a i5-2400?
Slower lightly-threaded because of lower clock speeds (2.9 GHz single threaded vs. 3.4 single threaded), slower at heavily multi-threaded loads because of lower clock speeds (2.0 GHz vs. 3.1 GHz will be halfway compensated for by the advantage of hyperthreading on the i7, but that's not enough). It should be likewise a little slower on all workloads in between.
The i7-26xxQM has better integrated graphics.
It's not a huge difference in CPU performance though. Architecture is the same, and the clock speeds aren't so far off.

Hey guys.
Can a HD Radeon 4850 run SC2 at ultra settings? If yes, what kind of specs does my com have to be? (currently using a intel core 2 6300 1.86 GHz 1 gb ram and I cant run sc2 on max settings and my monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 933 bw)
Also, I'm looking to upgrade my processor and motherboard, any recommendations? i dont need anything too high end, just a good investment probably something that can run diablo 3/dota 2 smoothly and ofc sc2.
Lastly, Im quite confused about the motherboard processor thing. It used to be that the motherboard and processor were sold separately right? but even since quad core came into the market it's being sold togther?
|
HD 4850 is on the low end to run SC2 at ultra at 1920x1080. Some people may find it acceptable, but most would rather just drop it to high. I don't think it's worth upgrading graphics until next year with the next generation of GPUs.
The problem is the CPU. Motherboards and processors can generally be bought separately or together; since they're from separate vendors it's usually separate unless you go to a store where they artificially have bundle deals or something like that. For some of the ultra-low-power systems, CPUs and motherboards are mostly always sold together though, but not quad cores like you're talking about.
You want a Pentium or Celeron Gxxx (3 digits), socket 1155 processor, a Core i3-2xxx (4 digits) socket 1155 processor, or Core i5-2xxx (4 digits) socket 1155 processor, depending on how much you want to spend. That will require a socket 1155 motherboard and DDR3 memory; cheap ones are fine. 4GB of DDR3 is really cheap these days. If your optical drive connects via PATA (IDE), it will not be compatible with most newer motherboards, which no longer have ports for that older standard.

Oh wait there is some confusion about my monitor. Actually my Samsung Syncmaster 933 bw is 19 inch and running at a resolution of 1440x900. Means my hd4850 can run ultra sc2 smoothly? =D
Im not sure why when i goggled there were 24 inch Samsung syncmaster 933 bws....

Oh whoops that's 933 BW. I ignored the code at the end apparently (19" 933SN is 1920x1080, which is the first thing I saw when searching for the 933)...1440x900 should be okay for the HD 4850.

On an HAF 912, which direction do you suggest I point the PSU fan? Up or down?
