There doesn't seem to be a dedicated laptop thread so I'll ask here..

I'm thinking about buying this: http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Superior_Mobility/U31SD/#overview
with the following specs: Intel i3-2310M @ 2.1 GHz, 4 GB DDR3 1066MHz, NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M, 1GB, 500 GB 5400rpm SATA.

Going to use it for work and surfing/email mostly. Maybe the occasional movie. Portability is important.

I was wondering if
1) it runs SC2? It might do ok on medium even?
2) anyone has experience with this laptop?
3) it feels cheap?
3) it sux or not?

I'm not looking to get anything super high end. The price range is 500-600 e if anyone wants suggest viable alternatives.

It isn't bad, but couldn't find the price on the website (maybe i'm just blind)

but if for 600€ you could get : http://www4.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=51264&agid=728
i5-2430m, 8gb ram, gt540m

better cpu (HT), more ram which can sometimes come in handy and a better gpi

For 550€there are models that can be interesting :
one with the i5 and gt520m and anotehr with i3 and gt540m (personally, i'd go with the better cpu, but it also only has 4gb ram compared to the 8 in the other one)

http://www4.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=49472&agid=728
http://www4.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=51259&agid=728

or similar at 500€ with a slightly better cpu (cloked 0.2ghz higher basicly)

http://www4.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=50780&agid=728

So not knowing the price of the one you linked can't know for sure if these are actually better deals or not, but they are the best i could find

all will run sc2 on medium np

The price on the one I linked is 589 €. It's not a steal, but 13 inch laptops with decent specs seem to be expensive. The ones you linked look nice but I would prefer a 13 inch model. Still, I will have to consider the 600 € one. Those are nice specs.

Supposedly a silent case

Indirect intakes and exhausts should lower the noise by a lot. They also implement some nifty features like a 3 pin fan power hub and 7V/5V fan adapters to slow fast spinning fans. No idea of the build quality but I'm guessing it'll be decent enough - you really want to look at how durable the door is since very few companies design a durable one. If it doesn't rattle and the side panels are sufficiently thick, it'll probably be piss easy to run this thing quietly. The molex fan hub is a godsend for undervolting a lot of fans to the 700-900RPM sweet spot.

Personally, I like this case better than the Fractal Design ones when it comes to cases that "steal good ideas and mash them together". Mighty expensive and large though - no idea how much Antec P183/280s go for in Europe but this thing doesn't seem cheap compared to the competition - so who knows how long this company will last.

If they come to Australia, I would probably take a look at one. Especially if they release a shorter version because what am I going to do with 8+1 expansion slots?

I cant find anywhere that sells one TBH.

EDIT: Also it looks like properly defective 570 chips are in limited supply so the 560 ti Core 448 is not a full time suggestion we can make on this board. They are going to run out probably sometime after christmas.

Can someone suggest a good mobo and good 8g ddr3 1600 ram for a i5 2500k and a 560 ti superclock setup. I want something with good onboard sound that is under 200$ preferably around 150$ if possible. I have been looking myself but am not nearly good enough with this stuff to figure out what a good reliable one actually is.

That is the case it is going in. I don't plan to SLI but who knows.

There is no such thing as a motherboard with good on-board sound. Basically every motherboard uses some Realtek chipset.

MSI P67 G43 or G45 are the best inexpensive options. If you want a higher-end board than you can get an ASUS P8Z68-V which is around $160. All of which uses the same chipset for sound.

Antec Three Hundred Illusion is a (very) terrible purchase.

You can get a Coolermaster HAF 912 for $55: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=55583&promoid=1244

P8Z68-V is a solid purchase though it may be a little high-end for a novice such as yourself.

If you want to save money, don't purchase from Newegg.

What mobo do you suggest for a novice? And where do you suggest buying from as a Canadian?

Thanks for the help btw

You'll want a MSI P67 G45 or G43.

You'll want to purchase from Canadian retailers such as NCIX who offers pricematching and ships from only Canadian warehouses.

Just post your configuration and I can help you with selecting better or the same components at a lower price.

This is basically how much such a configuration would cost from a Canadian retailer, $964 before mail in rebate and shipping. If you don't intend on doing SLI than you can get a ~500w power supply instead which would drop the total by like ~$20.

Hi guys,

I'm planning on building a new rig and having a hard time choosing a PSU and case. Here are my specs:

Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3
eVGA GTX 560Ti GDDR5 1GB 256bit 900/4212MHz DS SC Dual Fan
Intel Core i5 2500k
ram gskill G.skill Ripjaws-X 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz Cl9
Samsung 470 128gb SSD
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 RPM
Liteon 24x DVDRW

Would appreciate if you could recommend a PSU and case for me. I'm looking for a case with good air cooling (I live in a tropical country so cooling is a must) but I don't want to spend too much (limit is $80) but don't want it to be cramped either. For the PSU, a reliable one which can power the entire rig is fine for me. I might overclock a bit but probably not more than 10-15%. Any general comment about the build (parts I can replace with something as effective but cheaper, etc.) would be welcome too. Thanks for any help.

Hello, my friend is building a computer at the moment. I found this 4870 and was thinking of maybe suggesting he get two and put it in crossfire. Would this out perform a graphics card around the $150 price range?

Thanks

My Neo Eco is rated 100W lower than it should be, has lasted for 7 years, and has 87 percent efficiency even under full load.

Granted its an older model, but I can at least vouch for the name personally.

I didn't use the CD that came with the MB. I downloaded them all from the website. One of the drivers was for the USB 3.0 usage.

It was the drivers, thanks.

Hey skYr! Just wanted to say thanks for the help! Got everything up and running/updated tonight minus the GPU (still debating between 560ti norm or 448 version). However, the desktop is running great. Temps without the GPU are 24C and boot up is under 5 seconds...Thanks!!
I have a question...
